TXU, Community Chest Partner To Assist Those in Crisis
TXU Energy Aid has partnered with Hopkins County Community Chest to enable assistance for those in crisis to pay utility bills. A check presentation took place Tuesday morning at Community Chest on Linda Drive. Kim Campbell, with TXU, said they would partner with Community Chest following changes made in local agencies who serve those in need. TXU chose to partner with Community Chest because the agency is not tied to those with low income but also serves those in crisis situations. Campbell said this would be a long term relationship.
TXU works with 1,000 agencies across the state that assist TXU customers. TXU provides funds to 80 agencies in the state. TXU utilitizes over $5-million dollars each year in assistance. The TXU utility assistance program has been in existence for almost 32 years. Funds used come from donation by TXU customers.
Judy Moore, Executive Director of Community Chest, said the agency assists about 6,000 clients during the year. Community Chests helps with utility bills as well as medication and funds to provide transportation to doctor’s appointments. She said that to this point they had been restricted to $50 for each specific need. Much of the funding for Community Chest comes from United Way. Moore said the TXU partnership will allow them to assist TXU clients by giving more to each specific utility need and frees money that was used for TXU utilities can now be channeled to other needs. Moore will be accountable to TXU for the funds used.

Wildcat Marching Band Named Grand Champion at Prairiland
How good of a day did the Wildcats Marching Band have at a Prairiland contest Saturday against a field of quality bands? They took home a trophy, six (6) feet tall, so large it won’t fit in any the band’s trophy cases. Band Director Charles McCauley said that all the bands in the contest were Division I rated bands.
McCauley stated that the state winning former band director at Queen City is now at Mineola and they are now winning. The Mineola band won Grand Champion last week at Mt Pleasant where the Wildcat Band had placed third. McCauley stated the local marching band competed against not only Mineola but also Mt Pleasant, Redwater that was second in state last year, Winnsboro and others. McCauley said the competition was good to give confidence going into the Area contest.
The Wildcat band will compete Saturday at Mesquite Memorial Stadium in Area competition.
Stew Contest Saturday Features 161 Pots of Hopkins County Stew
The annual World Champion Hopkins County Stew Contest is coming up Saturday in Buford Park. The context will feature 161 pots of stew. Chamber of Commerce Executive Meredith Caddell is hoping for the best weather-wise. Ms. Caddell said excitement is building as stew-cooks are preparing for the event. Friday night, activity will begin on the stew grounds in Buford Park. T-shirts will be for sale both Friday night and Saturday. Stew aprons will also be for sale.
Weather could be a factor this year with a 70% chance of rain currently predicted for Friday and Saturday. Caddell said the area needs the rain and the cool weather will make the event pleasant. She said the forecast will not dampen the spirits of those involved.
Parking will be at a premium Friday night with Wildcat football at Prim Stadium and the event across Buford Circle in the park. The Corvette Show, stew, football, Fall Festival, and other events will make for a busy weekend in Sulphur Springs and Hopkins County.
Citizen Assists Sheriff’s Office in Recovery of Stolen Campers and Trucks
A stolen camper reaped a bumper crop for Hopkins County Sheriff’s Chief Investigator Lewis Tatum. The camper stolen on the east side of the county popped up not far from home. Following a search warrant, a bumper-pull camper and a pop-up camper were recovered, along with three stolen pickups—a F-150, a F-350, and a F-450.
During the search for the stolen camper, Tatum said a local resident called the Sheriff’s office to report the location of what they thought to be the stolen item. The camper had been painted but an examination of the camper proved it to be the one stolen. Tatum said this is a good example of “what happens when you have good citizens that help law enforcement.”
