Martha adds, “We enjoyed the lunch and fellowship with everyone and would like to thank Linda and Buddy for their hospitality,”

Yvonne Weir and Brenda Allen returned from a wonderful Ireland vacation Monday night. They report that the weather was great and the scenery was beautiful.

The Weir children and grandchildren came over the weekend to celebrate Robert’s birthday. They took him to lunch at Tierra del Sol, cooked on the grill for supper, and Destri made him a beautiful German chocolate cake. Yvonne says, “The grandchildren put tomatoes in the bird feeders and generally had a good time.”

The annual Horn Family Reunion was held at the Tira Community Center on Saturday. A small group gathered to visit and enjoy sharing a pot-luck lunch. We missed those who couldn’t be with us. Those in attendance agreed to move the reunion to the spring. The 2016 reunion will be held on April 23rd.

Jaidyn Joslin, daughter of Malcolm Joslin and Tiffany Vaughn, celebrated her 7th birthday with family on Saturday, October 10th, following the family reunion. Guests were treated to punch and cake and cupcakes with the “Frozen” theme.

The North Hopkins Alumni Homecoming was well attended, with close to 70 registered for the event. The group enjoyed playing Bingo, a delicious meal, catered by Birthwright BBQ, the video of the honored classes, and the music of the Monday Night Jam band. The former classmates had a good time recalling memories and catching up on the events of each other’s lives. More details will be coming in the Alumni Association report soon. The next homecoming will be October 8, 2016.

Chip’s sister, Linda Ellen Vaughn, came for a visit on Saturday evening and attended the NH Homecoming with us. On Sunday, Chip and I had lunch with Linda Ellen and Grace Vaughn at Grace’s apartment in Sulphur Springs. Our daughter, Tiffany, and her children Morgan, Kenden, and Jaidyn went to the State Fair of Texas with friends that day.

I enjoyed a late birthday celebration with friends, at Los Mochis in Sulphur Springs on Wednesday night (since we were traveling on my birthday week). Shirley Charles, Roy Smith, Keith, Frances, and Ethan Klein, Phil and Carla Kenley, and my husband, Chip, helped me celebrate with Frances’ delicious Brown Mountain cake, a balloon, and a card!

Miller Grove News

miller groveI believe we are having a baby boom in Miller Grove lately. Several couples are expecting babies and two with Miller Grove connections were born this week.

Brittney (Grant) Jones delivered a healthy baby boy this past Saturday. Little Robert Austin “Robbie” Jones was born Oct. 10, on his mother’s birthday. He weighed 6 lbs, 11 oz and was welcomed into the world by Brittney and Chris Jones as well as a host of grandparents and friends. Brittney was a 2010 graduate of MG and I’m sure many of you remember her grandfather, Henry Garmon of Miller Grove.

John Derick Wilbur has welcomed his third daughter into the world this week. Hadley Grace Wilbur was born Thursday, Oct. 15, weighing 7 lbs, 2 oz, and 19 ½ inches long. Mother, Stacie, and baby are doing well. I’m sure that little Hadley is being doted over by her big sisters, Sarah, Ava, and Kaitlyn. Other family members include proud grandmother, Alice Wilbur, and aunt Holly Wilbur, of Miller Grove.

Happy Birthday this week to Baden Shackelford on Oct. 11, Judy Slatter & Kim (Potts) Harper on Oct. 12, Johnny Lennon & Don Petty on Oct. 13, Haley Potts on Oct. 14, Sherry (Ragan) Dial on Oct. 15, and Gary McGowan on Oct. 17.

Sherry (Ragan) Dial had a good 50th birthday on Thursday. She was treated to a meal at Lou Viney’s Winery and Restaurant. Several cousins were on hand to help her celebrate her special day with gifts and a good meal.

As you travel the highways and byways don’t forget that all roads lead back home and back to Miller Grove. Please send me any newsworthy information. My email address is [email protected].

Price Orwosky, a third-generation businessman in Sulphur Springs, is 2015 Campaign Chairman for the Hopkins County United Way drive. He says it’s satisfying to see how the community responds with donations through payroll deduction and charitable gifts.  And it’s gratifying to see how individuals and families benefit from allocations made by United Way to local charities and services. The campaign runs through November 1. The goal for 2015 is $160,000. So far, with donations at $58,108.00, we are about a third of the way towards meeting that goal. If you would like to contact Price with a contribution, you can phone 903-348-4599 or drop it off at Murray-Orwosky Funeral Home. Or you may contact Executive Secretary Susan Berning at 903-243-4066. This is the 60th year anniversary of United Way in Hopkins County.

Salty Situations – Moving Beyond the Salt Shaker!

We hear many different messages about reducing the amount of sodium, salt, and sodium containing ingredients in the foods we eat.    Do you ever find yourself asking whether you should focus on reducing sodium or salt?  Sodium is found more often in processed foods, such as casseroles, pizza, and cold cuts, than the salt shaker.  One message is clear, Americans tend to consume more sodium than what is recommended and should limit the amount of sodium eaten daily.

The Dietary Guidelines for Americans (2010) recommends limiting daily sodium intake to less than 2,300 milligrams (about one teaspoon).  Consuming too much sodium may lead to high blood pressure, which may increase the risk for a heart attack and stroke.  Reducing sodium, which includes salt or other sodium containing ingredients, is beneficial in reducing risks for these health related conditions.  Follow these tips to reduce daily sodium intake:

Read the nutrition label: The nutrition facts label is one way to identify foods low or high in sodium.   The percent daily value listed on the nutrition facts label can help you quickly determine if a food is low or high in sodium.  Remember this rule for sodium – if the percent daily value is five or less this is a good

bet!  If the percent daily value is twenty percent or more leave it at the store! Be sure to choose foods with lower sodium content more often!

Know foods with sodium:  Knowing common foods high in sodium can help to make choosing lower sodium options easier.   Major sources of sodium include processed foods like canned products, breads, deli meats, snack foods, and mixed dishes.   Look for foods labeled as “low sodium” or “reduced sodium” and choose these foods.

Choose lower sodium foods at the store:  When you are at the store, compare different brands for condiments, canned foods, breads, and other sodium containing foods.  Different brands of foods can have different sodium levels.  Choose the lowest sodium between the foods you compare.

Reducing sodium in the foods we eat can take a little practice.  The tips listed are just a few of the many ways to begin reducing sodium.

Fall Festival Creative Arts Contest Final Reminder

Fall Festival week is officially here!  Join the fun by entering the Creative Arts Contest.  Each year, Hopkins County residents show off their skills by entering items for judging.  Entry divisions include Clothing, Food Preservation, Baked Goods, Decorated Cakes, Handiwork, Creative Crafts, Art, Scrapbooks, Photography, Quilts, Horticulture, Woodworking, Holiday/Seasonal, or Dolls.  All ages are encouraged to enter!  Children (ages 10 and under), Youth (ages 11-19), Adults (ages 20 to 69), and Older Texans (ages 70 and up) are all invited to enter something.  We also have a division for Assisted Living and Nursing Home Residents.

Items may be entered on Thursday, October 22, between 4:30 and 6:00 p.m., or Friday, October 23 between 7:30 and 9:30 a.m. at the Sulphur Springs High School Conference Center.  If those times are not possible, items may be taken to the Extension Office, 1200-B W. Houston (former Chamber of Commerce building), Monday thru Wednesday, October 19-21, between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.  Cost is $1 per person to enter.

Items will be open for public viewing following judging, approximately 1:30 to 5:00 p.m. on Friday, October 23, and 9:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, October 24.  Ribbons will be awarded and Best of Show winners will have pictures made on Saturday, October 24 at 1:30 p.m.  Contact the Extension Office at 903-885-3443 if you have questions.

And BE SURE to visit the Arts & Crafts Show, held on Friday and Saturday in the Sulphur Springs High School Cafeteria, north entrance, and grounds.  This is a great opportunity to do a little early Christmas shopping or to find that one-of-a-kind hand-crafted item!

SSHS Cross Country Teams Advance to Regional Competition

cross country

Both the Wildcats and Lady Cats’ cross country teams qualified for regional competition with third place finishes at the district meet Thursday in Mt. Pleasant. Holt says Cross Country has only one shot at placing in district. He noted that any injury or sickness could totally affect the day’s district finish.

Cross Country Coach Andy Holt said the Lady Cats overcame several difficulties during the year. He was pleased with their over all performance Thursday. Lauren Helm and Taylor Robinson finished 14th and 15th to lead Lady Cat runners. Mt Pleasant placed first. Hallville was second.

Wildcats place third as well. Tanner Rameriz and Payton Vickery ran well for the boys. He said with a week and a half before regionals, Holt expects improvement for his other runners during that time. Hallsville placed first beating second place Pine Tree by two (2) points.
