Authorities stopped a Honda Civic at 5:37 p.m. at mile marker 121 on Interstate 30 west for speeding and a defective brake light.

Texas DPS Trooper Arturo Ugalde allegedly observed “indicators of criminal activity and deception during a roadside interview” with both the driver, identified in reports as 53-year-old Lee Archie McNeil, and passenter, identified as 19-year-old Javarez Devon Martin who reportedly resides at the same address as the driver.

McNeil reportedly agreed to let the trooper search the car, but claimed his friend had left his pipe and credit card in his vehicle. The trooper allegedly found a glass pipe with white residue on it and a Chase Bank debit card that did not belong to either McNeil or Martin in the driver’s side door panel, a container of Smirnoff in the back of the front passenger’s seat and a bag containing one Xanax pill and one Ecstasy pill stuffed between the back and seat cushion of the passenger’s seat.

McNeil was taken into custody and jailed on fraudulent use or possession of identifying information and possession of drug paraphernalia charges. He also was charged with no driver’s license, according to arrest and jail reports. He remained in the county jail Saturday morning, Feb. 22, 2020, on the fraud charge; bond was set at $5,000 on the fraud charge.

Martin was arrested for possession of a Penalty Group 2 controlled substance and possession of less than 28 grams of a Penalty Group 3 controlled substance, according to arrest reports. He remained in Hopkins County jail Saturday morning. Bond was set at $10,000 on the felony PG 2 charge and $2,000 on the Class A misdemeanor PG 3 charge.

The vehicle was impounded and the pair was taken to jail.

The fraud department at Chase Bank “confirmed the card had been flagged and cancelled by the cardholder but would not specify any further information,” Ugalde alleged in arrest reports.

DODGING RAINDROPS: The last time that the Rangers were cancelled in a spring training game was 3/12/19 at ARI due to rain…in that contest, the game was called with the Rangers trailing 2-0 and batting in the top of the 5th inning, runners on first and second base, and 2 outs…the first 3 innings were played without interruption, but a light rain began to fall in the 4th inning and gradually increased to a steady downpour in the next frame.

• Last year’s instance marked the Rangers’ first spring rainout in Arizona since 3/19/15 at CIN, a contest that was cancelled due to rain and field conditions…the club also had a spring rainout in Arlington on 3/27/18 vs. CIN.

• Before the 2015 instance in Goodyear, each of the Rangers’ previous 3 AZ rainouts had come in 3 straight years from 2011-13, all on trips to Maryvale to play the Brewers…on 3/8/13 at MIL, teams played only 4 innings in rainy and windy conditions before the game was called with Texas leading 2-0…on 3/18/12 at MIL, the teams also got in 4 innings before the rains came…on 3/21/11 at MIL, the Rangers never left Surprise as the game was called before the scheduled start time.

• The Rangers have not been rained out in Surprise since 3/11/06 vs. COL.

Sulphur Springs Shooting Suspect Jailed In Wood County

A Mineola man wanted in connection with a Feb. 5 shooting in Sulphur Springs was arrested in Wood County jail Friday.

Brandon Clayton Soles

Soles was arrested by Wood County Precinct 2 Constable on Feb. 21 on the aggravated assault warrant for the alleged aggravated assault in Sulphur Springs, according to Wood County jail reports. Soles also had Wood County charges, according to SSPD. Wood County jail reports show Soles was also booked into the jail Feb. 21 for possession of 4 ounces or more but less than 5 pounds of marijuana. Bond on the Sulphur Springs charge was set at $500,000 and on the other at $20,000, according to Wood County jail reports.

Brandon Clayton Soles was identified Feb. 18 by Sulphur Springs Police Department investigators as the suspect in a shooting that left one injured at Spring Valley Apartments on Freeman Street on Feb. 5

“In the course of the investigation, Detective Jason Reneau determined Brandon Clayton Soles was involved in the shooting incident and a warrant has been issued for Soles’ arrest for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Soles has an address in the Mineola, Texas area,” the Feb. 18 SSPD press release stated.

Police investigators Feb. 6 reported the shooting was believed to be drug-related. Officials received calls around 6:45 p.m. Feb. 5 that gunshots had been fired and one person was shot. SSPD Lt. Rusty Stillwagoner released this statement Thursday morning. Police arrived and applied first aid to the shooting victim, who was not identified, until EMS arrived. The suspect or suspects had reportedly fled by the time officials arrived.

“Witnesses lead investigators to believe this crime was drug related,” a Feb. 6 SSPD release stated.

Soles’ arrested Feb. 21 was at least the second time Soles has been arrested in Wood County. He was arrested by Mineola Police Dec. 6, 2019, for possession of 2 ounces or less of marijuana; he was released from jail later that day on a $1,000 bond, according to Wood County jail reports.

Wildcats and Lady Cats Track Teams Compete at Lindale Tri-Meet Thursday

Wildcats and Lady Cats Track Teams Compete at Lindale Tri-Meet Thursday

The Wildcats and Lady Cats Track Teams got a bit of an early start on track season by competing in a tri-meet at Lindale with Jacksonville Thursday. Both teams featured lots of young athletes so the relaxed atmosphere was a good way to ease into competition. There were no throwing events because the ground was too muddy. Jumping and running events were held.

Matt Young returns as Wildcats Track Coach. He said sophomore Weston Fields, who hasn’t high jumped since the 7th grade, cleared 5 feet 8 inches. Coach Young said Landon Fields and Caden Eaton were in the triple jump and had marks in the 40 foot area and in the long jump where they got to around 19 feet. He said marks were very informal. Distance runner Jose Mejia won the 3200-meter run. Coach Young said Mejia and Evan Patrick, Camden Fuller and Kyle Snell all did the 3200, 800 and 1600 meter runs in the span of about 4 hours. He said teams could put as many as 5 athletes in any event. The 4X100-meter relay got the stick around but got nipped at the end by Jacksonville. The relay team consisted of Caden Davis, Kaden Wallace, Weston Fields and Caden Eaton. Nabian Ramirez ran the 800-meter run in 2:05. Coach Young said if Ramirez lowers the time to around 1:58 he could challenge for a regional spot. He said he broke in a lot of athletes on the 110-meter and 300 meter hurdles. Hurdlers included Landon Fields, Daniel Elam, Cameron Hargrave, C.J. Johnson, Caleb Massey, Matthew Brown and Antonio Kessler. Coach Young said all the guys cleared all the hurdles. He said Ricardo Torres and Nabian Ramirez had good legs on the 4X200-meter relay. Torres also ran 54.3 in the 400-meter race. Wildcats running the 200-meter race were C.J. Williams, Caden Davis, Kaden Wallace and Bryson Lacy. Coach Young said Ricardo Torres, Camden Fuller and Weston Fields had good legs in the 4X400-meter relay.

Ross Hicks is the new Lady Cats Track Coach. He said Myssiah Dugan, Bre’Asia Ivery and Aliyah Abron did a good job in the long jump. Coach Hicks said his three high jumpers, Aliyah Abron, Brooklyn Burnside and Dalanee Myles, all had some success. He said he has high hopes for them this season. Pole vaulter Claire Bybee cleared 10 feet 6 inches, not too far from her record 11 feet. The Lady Cats 4X100-meter relay team of Aliyah Abron, Bre’Asia Ivery, Myssiah Dugan and Vanessa Wayne, won the race with a time around 51 seconds. The Lady Cats 4X200 meter relay team of Aliyah Abron, Bre’Asia Ivery, Myssiah Dugan and Justice Jones took second with a solid time. Coach Hicks said the relay teams got the stick around but he added the hand offs needed some work. Bre’Asia Ivery won the 100-meter race. Coach Hicks said Dalanee Myles ran a good 400-meter race. Lainey Hurst took first in the 800-meters and Mikayla Jimmerson was third. Senior Sydney Washburn won both the 1660-meter and 3200-meter runs.

The annual Sulphur Springs Meet is next on Friday, February 28. There will be 7 schools there. Field events start at 4 p.m. with running events beginning at 6:30 p.m.
