Kids Fishing Day: Great Weather, Great Turnout at Peavine Pinion Pond

Feb 10, 2021 – Dozens of kids and their families showed up to catch trout during the annual Larry Buster Memorial Kids Fishing Day at Peavine Pinion Pool on Saturday February 8, 2020. Sponsoring organizations and businesses as well as volunteers made the day possible. Texas Parks and Wildlife had stocked the pond with young trout a few weeks prior to the event. A good number of bass were also caught.

Local volunteers from the National Wild Turkey Federation and local Kiwanis Club members were on site preparing hot dogs for the young anglers. Jimmy Reardon of JDRfishing Adventures personally assisted most of the youngsters through the morning. A registration table allowed each youngster an information packet about fishing as well as a sign-up for prizes. Giveaway of 70 rod and reel prizes was sponsored by volunteers and local individuals who just wanted to help keep this amazing Spring event going for kids in the community.

Each young fisherman received a Kid Fish fun packet. Those who did not bring fishing equipment had access to free use of rod and reel as well as bait, which was whole kernel corn. The fishing pond, located in Buford Park near downtown Sulphur Springs, was named for Clovis “Peavine” Pinion, a KSST Radio employee who sponsored a daily Hunting and Fishing Show on the air for over 40 years. Pinion loved to help kids learn the enjoyment of fishing which often led to a lifelong hobby. His slogan was “Go fishing! Every day you fish adds a day to your life!”.

Fishing guide Jimmy Reardon of JDR Fishing Adventures non-profit gladly volunteered his time to help kids learn to fish
Some fished from the bridge and pier and others from the grassy banks surrounding the pond. Several bass were caught as well as trout.

Sulphur Springs Teen Accused Of Evidence Tampering, Cocaine Possession

An 18-year-old Sulphur Springs resident reportedly caught officials’ attention by walking on the wrong side of Lamar Street around 10:45 p.m. Friday, Feb. 7. He then attempted to walk away from the officer instead of stopping when issued commands by the officer, according to police reports.

Officers alleged one hand and arm were extended away from the teen’s body as he walked away from the officer. The officer “physically stopped” the man “with the least amount of force necessary” and put him into handcuffs, Sulphr Springs Police Officer Zach Brown alleged in arrest reports.

Galen Jahiem Wright

The officer then searched the immediate area where the teen had been, and located a clear bag containing suspected crack cocaine in a yard where the teen had walked, Brown alleged in arrest reports. The contraband allegedly weighed 3.6 grams and tested positive for cocaine, resulting in Galen Jahiem Wright’s arrest.

Wright, who is noted in reports to be known by the alias “G-Money,” was booked into Hopkins County jail, where he remained Saturday morning, Feb. 8. His bond was set at $10,000 each on the possession of 1 gram or more but less than 4 grams of a Penalty Group 1 controlled substance in a drug-free zone (due to the arrest location’s proximity to Pacific Park) and tampering with evidence, according to jail and arrest reports.

Feb. 7 marked the second time in five months that Wright has been booked into the county jail. He was also arrested Sept. 18, 2019, for possession of less than 2 ounces of marijuana in a drug-free zone and on a traffic warrants. He was released from jail Sept. 19 on $2,000 bond on the marijuana charge, according to jail reports.

DPS: Marijuana, Wine, Methamphetamine Found During I-30 Traffic Stop

Texas Department of Public Safety Troopers arrested a 47-year-old Texarkana woman, who allegedly possessed methamphetamine, marijuana and wine during a traffic stop Friday morning.

The trooper allegedly smelled an “intoxicating beverage” odor emitting from a Dodge Dart, while talking to the driver he had stopped at 8:35 a.m. Feb. 7 on Interstate 30 east at mile marker 141 for speeding. Seeing an open bottle of MD 20/20 on the front passenger’s floorboard and a wet center console, Trooper Warren Williamson instructed Stephanie Rena Bean to exit the car, according to arrest reports.

Stephanie Rena Bean

Bean reportedly agreed to let the trooper search her jacket pockets. Williamson alleged finding a small bag containing a clear, crystal-like substance he recognized from his experience and training to be methamphetamine. Consequently, the trooper took Bean into custody, the trooper alleged in arrest reports.

A search of the car allegedly revealed a small bag of suspected marijuana in a backpack on the front seat and a small, hand-rolled marijuana cigarette on the rear floorboard behind the driver’s seat.

Bean’s car was impounded and she was taken to jail for possession of a Penalty Group 1 controlled substance and possession of less than 2 ounces of marijuana, arrest reports noted.

At the jail, Bean allegedly agreed to standard field sobriety testing, which she was unable to successfully complete. She “demonstrated she did not have the use of her normal mental and physical faculties due to the induction of alcohol and drugs into her system,” Williamson alleged in arrest reports. Bean was subsequently charged with driving while intoxicated with an open container

The 47-year-old Texarkana woman was booked into the county jail on all three charges; the suspected contraband was packaged to be submitted to the DPS crime lab in Tyler for analysis, according to arrest reports.

Bean, who jail reports noted is also known as Stephanie R. Cupp, remained in Hopkins County jail Saturday morning, Feb. 8, 20202 on all three charges, according to jail reports.
