This is National FFA Week so watch for the distinctive “blue jackets” worn by FFA members. Sulphur Springs ISD has new leadership for the 319 members of the SSHS FFA chapter and Ag Department. Instructors John Holland and Melissa Robbins along with Kade Brown, Student Advisor and Morgan Mayers, FFA Chapter President are getting ready for the “county show” February 25-27. The annual NETLA (Northeast Texas Livestock Association) show will feature 257 4H and FFA county students and their livestock projects. The public is encouraged to come and see the animals and meet the youth, and stay for the Sale of Champions on Saturday February 27 at 1pm. A third SSHS Ag instructor John Luper is getting the FFA Ag Mechanics team ready to compete at the San Antonio Livestock Show this weekend. Other SSHS FFA officers not pictured are Jake Couch VP; Dakota Watkins, Secretary; Josh Couch, Treasurer; Sierra Sells, Sentinel; and Molly Gibbins, Historian.
Lady Cats Soccer Shut Down Marshall 3-0
The Lady Cats Soccer Team earned a 3-0 victory at Marshall Friday night. The Lady Cats got a lift from Emily Moran who came off the bench and scored the first goal of the game. Emily was selected as the Lady Cats player of the game.
The Lady Cats took a 1-0 lead into halftime. The Lady Cats added two goals in the second half. They got one each from Mileena Zirreta and Gracie Boyer. With the win the Lady Cats improved to 5-2-1 in district play and 14-3-1 for the season. The Lady Cats will travel to Mt. Pleasant for a district game Tuesday night.
91 Runs Give Lady Cats a 6-0 Sweep in Home Tournament
It is fitting that the Lady Cats ended their participation in their own Sulphur Springs Tournament with Kristen Allen’s grand slam home run in a 14-5 victory over Prosper Saturday afternoon. In all the Lady Cats scored 91 runs and gave up only 20 as they went 6-0 in the tournament.
The scores were 20-6 over Paul Pewitt, 17-4 over Royse City, 21-0 versus West Mesquite, 12-4 over Princeton, 7-1 against Holliday and 14-5 over Prosper. In the Prosper game, the Lady Eagles pulled within 7-5 in the top of the fifth inning only to see the Lady Cats bat around scoring 7 runs on four hits to end the game at 14-5.
Sadie Stroud hit two home runs including an inside the park homer and she drove in five runs. Alyssa Abron had a triple and drove home two runs. Landri Bell got the pitching win giving up only two runs and five hits over the first four innings. The Lady Cats will compete next in an Allen tournament this Thursday through Saturday.
Wildcats Power-lifting Team Finish Third at Paris Meet
The Wildcats Power-lifting Team finished in third place among 16 teams at a Paris Meet last Thursday.
The Wildcats got first place finishes from Ian Blanch in the 242 pound class and from Joell Morales in the 123 pound class. Isaiah Neal was second in the 181 pound class. Cortavius Pruitt was third in the 148 pound class. Johnathan Alvarez was fourth in the 132 pound class. Oscar Yanez was fifth in the 114 pound class. Other places by Wildcats lifters included Vincent Morales sixth in the 165 pound class, Alex Rodriguez seventh in the 114 pound class, Jacob Jonaitis ninth in the Super Heavy Weight class, Dustin Crabtree ninth in the 132 pound class and Carson Bridges thirteen in the 165 pound class.
Powerlifters who qualify in the top twelve in the region in their weight class will attend the Regional Meet in Lindale onMarch 5.
Over 1,000 Hopkins County Early Voters in First Four Days
Friday early voting in the March 1st Primary pushed the total number of voters to cast ballots to 1,134. Republicans voting Friday numbered 231 and 30 Democrats voted as well. For Democrats, 95 have cast ballots. Republican numbers total 1,039.
Early voters have an opportunity to cast ballots this weekend—Saturday from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. and Sunday from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. Early voting for the March 1st Primary continues through Friday February 26th.
Early voting in Hopkins County takes place at only one location—Sulphur Springs Administration Board Room on Connally Street. The Board Room is located at the back of the building facing Connally Street.
Lady Cats Undefeated Going Into Second Day of Local Tourney
The Lady Cats Softball Team improved their season record to 4-0 with two more impressive wins Friday in their own Sulphur Springs Tournament.
Early Friday afternoon, the Lady Cats pounded out 23 hits including 8 extra base hits to soundly defeat West Mesquite, 21-0. The game featured a ten run second inning for the Lady Cats who collected 9 hits and sent 14 batters to the plate. Sarah Womack pitched a one-hitter going four and a half innings.
Later the Lady Cats scored in each of the first five innings against Princeton to take a 12-1 lead and then they hung on for a the 12-4 win. The Lady Cats collected 17 hits and limited Princeton to six hits. Landri Bell was impressive in the pitcher’s circle for the Lady Cats.
The Lady Cats will wrap up the tournament with Saturday games against Holliday at 10 a.m. and against Prosper at 3:15 p.m. with both games at Lady Cat Park.
Espinoza Leads Wildcats Soccer to 2-1 Victory Over Marshall
The Wildcats Soccer Team got two goals from Chris Espinoza to get by a pesky Marshall team, 2-1 at Gerald Prim Stadium Friday night. Espinoza scored the only goal in the first half at 16:46. In the second half, the Mavericks got a goal that tied the score at the 37:39 mark. The winning Wildcat goal at 24:29 began as a long free kick from Tanner Ramirez that Espinoze got to behind the defense and he put it in the net. After that, the Wildcats defense shut the door.
With the win, the Wildcats improved to 6-2 in district play. Their season record is now 11-7-1.
Next the Wildcats face rival Mt. Pleasant at Gerald Prim Stadium on Tuesday night at 7 p.m.
Traffic Signals Down for One Week in Emory

Texas Department of Transportation officials today announced that traffic signals at US 69 and FM 515 in Emory in Rains County will be down due to construction for about one week beginning Feb. 22.
While the signals are out of commission, motorists and vehicles traveling north and south on US 69 will not have to stop at the intersection of US 69 and FM 515, officials said.
However, motorists and vehicles traveling on FM 515 and Industrial Drive will have to stop before crossing or turning onto US 69. Advance warning signs will be placed along FM 515 and Industrial Drive to notify motorists and drivers of the temporary change in traffic flow.
Motorists who regularly travel these roads are urged to pay special attention to all signs and traffic controls, and to reduce their speed as they travel through this area. They should also avoid distractions such as cell phones, eating, drinking, or car audio or navigation systems.
Hopkins Rains County Farm Bureau Donate to Meal-a-Day

Hopkins-Rains County Farm Bureau donated $150 to the Meal-a-Day Program during Food Connection week.
SSHS Solo & Ensemble Advance to State
February 19, 2016 – The Sulphur Springs High School Solo & Ensemble choir competed at Texas A&M University Commerce Friday, February 5. 19 students attended competition and nine will be advancing to the State level.

Students worked with private voice teacher Monica Lancaster in order to prepare for competition. The choir students received their music in November and have practiced both after school and at home. Choir began working on their pieces during class time in January.
State competition will be held at UT Austin in May. The advancing students are senior Riley Bridges, senior Sarah Bennett, senior Brittany Henderson, junior Karolina Espinoza, junior Sydnee Hawkins, junior Savannah McAfee, sophomore Cinthya Cortez, sophomore Alyssa Leuzinger, and freshman Hope Williams.
