When Evading Arrest Don’t Stop for a Beer
While on patrol, a Sulphur Springs Police officer noted a man running across the street. He was running from the manager of a convenience store located on League Street. The store manager was stating he had just been robbed.
The officer exited his vehicle and gave chase. The man evaded officers called to the scene but was soon found sitting near the railroad track drinking a Coors Beer that he had taken from the store. What was at first described to officers as an armed robbery turned out to be shoplifting. However, a records check on the man showed a prior conviction for evading arrest. That bumped everything up to a State Jail Felony.
Christopher Leon Huddleston, 37, of Sulphur Springs was arrested in the 200 block of League Street and charged with Evading Arrest Detention with Previous Conviction. He is in Hopkins County Jail being held on a $10,000 bond.
Sulphur Springs Pair Arrested for Injury to Child with Intent

Sulphur Springs Police arrested Amanda Kay Johnson, 27, and Ronald Donald Tucker, 27, for Injury to a Child with Intent. Once again, drug use in their residence on South Broadway had an adverse affect on the children in the home, according to a member of the Special Crimes Unit.
Both Johnson and Tucker are in Hopkins County Jail charged with two counts each for Injury to a Child with Intent and are being held on bonds totaling $50,000 each.
Wildcat Basketball Season Ends In Area Overtime
The Wildcats’ basketball team saw their season end in an area game loss to Carrollton Creekview, 67-64 in overtime at Rockwall Friday night. The Mustangs outscored the Wildcats, 10-7 in overtime.
The Mustangs hit 8 of 10 free throws and made one basket. Victor Iwuakor scored 5 of his game high 22 points in overtime for the Wildcats. A long three point attempt to tie the game at the buzzer by Keaston Willis did not fall.
The Wildcats built a lead in each of the first three quarters going from up 1 in the first quarter and then by 3 at halftime and by 6 after three quarters before the game was tied up, 57-57 after regulation. Willis and senior Ke”ontae Dunn scored 11 points apiece for the Wildcats. Michael Jefferson scored 10 points. Augustine Ene had 21 points for Carrollton Creekview.
The Wildcats end the season with a 26-7 record. The Wildcats will lose two seniors off the roster: Dunn and Dane Rutherford.

Lady Cats Softball Friday Tourney Results
The Lady Cats’ softball team earned a split of two games in an Allen tournament Friday with an afternoon thumping of Dallas W.T. White, 13-4. Earlier Friday, the Lady Cats lost to Rowlett, 7-6. Against W.T. White, the Lady Cats hammered out 18 hits and scored 3 runs in the first inning, 4 more in the second, 1 in the third and 5 more in the fourth. Bailey Haggerty threw shutout ball for 4 innings striking out 4. Alyssa Abron and Macee Hollins led the hit parade with 3 hits apiece. Sadie Stroud drive home 3 runs and Alli Fite and Hollins had 2 RBI’s. With the wins over Frisco Liberty and McKinney North Thursday, the Lady Cats now have won 3 and lost 1 I the Allen tournament. They will play Sherman Saturday morning starting at 11 a.m. The Lady Cats now have a 7-2 season record.

Wildcats Shutout Nacogdoches in Tyler Tourney
The Wildcats’ baseball team broke into the win column with a 9-0 shutout of Nacogdoches Friday afternoon in the Rose City Classic at Mike Carter Field in Tyler. Nacogdoches got only 4 hits. The Wildcats pounded out 15 hits.
The Wildcats scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning. They added a single run in the fourth and five more in the sixth. Easton Silman was 3 for 3 with a walk and he had 1 RBI. Mason Buck, Kaden Argenbright, Dawson Draper and Triston McCormick all had 2 hits. Ryan Humphries had a double and drove in 3 runs. McCormick also hit a double.
The win gave the Wildcats a split of two games Friday in the tournament. Earlier the Wildcats lost to Waxahachie, 11-4. The Wildcats lost their first two games in the tournament Thursday, 6-5 to Forney and 8-3 to Lindale.
The Wildcats are 1-3 for the season. They will play Whitehouse at Mike Carter Field Saturday at 5 p.m. in the Rose City Classic.

Wildcats Soccer Loses Close Game in Marshall
The Wildcats’ soccer team had their second close loss of the season to Marshall Friday night at Marshall. The Mavericks scored goals in the first half and second half to defeat the Wildcats 2-1. The Wildcats managed a second half goal.
In their first meeting in Sulphur Springs on January 31, the two teams tied 2-2 in regulation. Both teams scored one goal in overtime making it 3-3. Marshall won the shootout, 6-5.
The Wildcats now have 2 wins, 2 shootout losses and 4 outright losses. The Wildcats are now 9-5-3 for the season. They will play Texas High Tuesday at the SSHS Track Complex. The Wildcats won at Texas High back on February 3.

Picture Story: NETLA Show Underway; Sale of Champions Saturday
NETLA, Northeast Texas Livestock Association, is 15 years old this year (2017) and the NETA Show highlights the accomplishments and industry of Hopkins County youth in 4-H and FFA. Swine, goats, lambs, steers, and poultry will be exhibited by the participants. All are seeking the opportunity to make the Sale of Champions, which can provide money for college or another animal to show or some other pursuit of the student show-person.
The late Larry Spradlin, FFA teacher and former Hopkins County Extension Agent was a driving force behind the show. His legacy and the support of many in the community make this a successful endeavor for youth.
This year there are 88 exhibitors and 126 projects in the Swine Division; 55 exhibitors and 57 projects in the Goats Division; 30 exhibitors and 43 projects in the Lambs Division; 25 exhibitors and 28 animals in the Steer Division, and 64 exhibitors and 64 projects in the Poultry Division

Wildcats Track Has Great Start to Season
Wildcats Track Coach Matt Young said his team had a great start to the season at a meet in Denison Thursday evening. He said he was proud of the way the Wildcats competed.
Coach Young said Ian Blanch had a personal record of 44-feet-8 inches in the shotput. D’Idric Dugan also placed in the top six in the shot. In the discus, Josh Thompson threw 123 feet, Gideon Gregory went 110 feet and D.J. Hoppe had 105 feet as all three placed.
Landry Tyson was second in the high jump at 5-foot ten-inches, he won the 300 meter hurdles in 43.7 seconds and ran a low 17 second time in the 110 meter hurdles.
Tyson Goodson was second in the triple jump at 42-feet-5 inches and set a personal record of 5-feet 8 inches in the high jump.
Landon Thornton won the 3200-meter run and he placed in the 1600 meter run. Peyton Vickery won the 1600 meter run and was third in the 3200-meter run. Eduardo Ramirez was fourth in the 3200-meter run. Eli Sellers ran a 2-min-10 second 800-meter race into a strong wind. Sellers also placed in the 1600-meter run.
Terrell Turman ran a low 16 second time in the 110-meter hurdles. Lawrence Worth ran 11.6 seconds in the 100 meter dash. Coach Young said the 4X400 meter relay team of Landry Tyson, Lawrence Worth, Tiesan Goodson and Terrell Turman finished off a good night. C
oach Young said he was excited with how the team started the season. Next up is the Sulphur Springs Meet next Friday. Teams joining the Wildcats include Denison, Sherman, Paris, Mt. Pleasant and North Forney. Field events start at 4 p.m. with running events beginning at around 6:45p.m. A JV meet will be held next Thursday at the SSHS Track Complex.

Wildcats Lose Third Game to Waxahachie
The Wildcats’ baseball team lost it’s third game of the season in the Rose City Classic in Tyler Friday. The Wildcats lost to Waxahachie, 11-4 at Tyler Lee Field. The Indians scored two runs in the second and three more in the third to take a 5-0 lead after three. The Wildcats fought back to within 5-3 after five inning. Waxahachie scored a single run in the six and five more in the seventh while the Wildcats tacked on a single run in the seventh. Kamren Harrison took the pitching loss. The defeat made the Wildcats 0-3 for the season. They’ll played Nacogdoches Friday and will play Whitehouse at 5 p.m. Saturday at Mike Carter Field in Tyler.
On Thursday the Wildcats dropped their season opener to Forney, 6-5 and then lost to Lindale 8-3.
