Deputy’s Suspicions Lead to Arrest of Cumby Man
At 11:16 p.m. Saturday night, Hopkins County Deputy stopped a vehicle for being suspicious and found the driver, Adam Blaine Cockrell, 24 of Cumby, did not belong in the County Road 1178 area. The deputy noted the odor of marijuana and was a pipe with burn marks in a cup holder. Cockrell also had residue on his shorts. A pat down revealed marijuana in his sock. A backpack in the vehicle contained methamphetamine in a plastic baggie.
At the time of the stop, Cockrell could not produce a driver’s license or financial responsibility (insurance card).
Cockrell is in Hopkins County jail charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance Penalty Group 1 less than 1-gram and possession of drug paraphernalia. He is being held on a $20,000 bond.
Wood County Sheriff’s Report February 1-7, 2017
For KSST’s Wood County audience, we will begin posting the Wood County Sheriff’s Report each week.
February 1st
While on patrol on FM 14, just north of Hawkins, a deputy observed that a vehicle was failing to maintain a single lane of travel and so conducted a traffic stop. The driver appeared to be intoxicated so he was asked to exit the vehicle. The deputy then noticed marijuana residue on the subject’s clothes. While searching the vehicle, the deputy discovered marijuana and drug paraphernalia. The driver, Roy Greenlee, II, was determined not to be intoxicated, but was arrested for possession of marijuana, 2 ounces or less.
Deputies were dispatched to an alarm call at the Dollar General on E. Greenville in Alba. Glass was shattered on one of the sliding glass doors and it appeared that someone had attempted to get into the money safe and also the cigarette case. Camera footage showed 2 males enter the building and because they were unable to get into either the safe or cigarette case, they removed 2 boxes of beer out of the cooler. The case has been forwarded to the Alba Police Department to follow-up.
At 1:11 p.m., cows were reported out on CR 1600 just east of CR 1602 in Alba. They were returned to the pasture.
At 6:10 p.m., horses were reported out on FM 1647 at Highway 11. They were returned to the pasture.
At 8:58 p.m., cows were reported out, but not located on FM 14 between 2088 and 37.
At 11:48 p.m., cows were out on FM 2088 east of 3120 in Quitman. They were returned to the pasture.
February 2nd
At 6:54 a.m., horses were reported out, but not located on FM 1647 at Highway 11.
At 8:14 a.m., cows were out on FM 515 near FM 2225. They were returned to the pasture.
Deputies were dispatched to CR 2425 in Mineola in regards to an unresponsive 27 year old male. EMS was already on the scene and the individual was determined to be deceased. An autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death. The investigation is ongoing.
February 3rd
At 7:26 a.m., horses were reported out, but not located on CR 1660 in Alba.
At 9:58 a.m., cows were reported out on 37 N near CR 4893 in Winnsboro. The fence was repaired and the cows put back into pasture.
Deputies were dispatched to a home located on PR 8556 in Winnsboro on a reported burglary. An unknown person or persons broke into their house, storage building and shop and stole numerous items. This case has been forwarded to investigators for follow-up.
Deputies were dispatched to a possible burglary of a building on Main Street in Yantis. The business owner arrived for work to find the front door damaged and apparently kicked open. She reported some of her inventory missing as well as some cash from a cash box. Investigators will follow up.
At 6:52 p.m., cows were reported out on 2088, 2-3 miles west of 14.
Deputies were dispatched to a home on CR 3230 in reference to a theft. The complainant stated that 2 home healthcare workers had stolen his wallet and phone and left with his car. Investigators will follow up with this case.
Deputies arrived at a home on Front Street in Mineola looking for an individual in regards to a felony warrant service. The individual who answered the door told deputies that he was alone at the residence, but the wanted individual was found to also be at the home. Jorge Rodriguez was placed in custody for Hindering Apprehension.
Deputies were dispatched to the Dollar General on FM 2869 in Hawkins on an alarm call. Unknown suspects had gained entry into the store through a window. The manager arrived at the store and advised that approximately $1600.00 was missing from the safe. This has been forwarded to investigators for follow-up.
February 4th
At 10:03 a.m., cows were reported out on N. 37 in Winnsboro.
The Sheriff’s office received a phone call reporting a scam. The complainant received a phone call from an unknown man advising that she had won money in a contest. He requested that she send a money gram for $350 before he could send her the contest money. She sent a portion of the money, but when he insisted she send more, she decided to ask for her money to be returned. He then hung up on her repeatedly when she pursued it. Sheriff Tom Castloo recommends that, if you receive a similar phone call and have any doubts as to the truth of the information, please call the Sheriff’s office for advice.
Deputies were dispatched to a location on East 154 in Quitman regarding a burglary of a building. The complainant reported several items missing from his barn. The case has been forwarded to investigators.
Deputies were dispatched to CR 1660 in Alba. The complainant reported that his dog had been shot in the right front leg by a small caliber rifle. This case has been forwarded to investigators.
February 5th
At 1:01 a.m., cows were reported out on 2088/312.
Deputies conducted a traffic stop on FM 14 south of CR 3679 at approximately 2:15 a.m., the driver was unable to provide a valid driver’s license and the passenger was intoxicated. They were given the option to contact someone with a license to pick up the vehicle, but they declined. Consequently, the driver, Jose Guzman, was arrested for Driving While Unlicensed and the passenger, Rigoberto Angel, was arrested for Public Intoxication.
At 9:03 a.m., cows were reported out on FM 69 in Quitman. The owner was located.
At 10:14 a.m., cows were reported out, but not located on FM 2869, about 7 miles south of Winnsboro.
At 11:04 a.m., cows were reported out on FM 49 just east of 3265. They were put back in the pasture.
The Sheriff’s Office received a call from a complainant reporting unauthorized charges on his credit card. He believes that a previous girlfriend used his credit card number to make purchases on his card. He does wish to pursue charges.
Deputies were dispatched to FM 2966 just south of CR 1813 in Yantis in reference to a vehicle in the roadway. Upon arrival, deputies observed a man and woman sitting in the grass outside of the vehicle. The man appeared agitated and began walking away from the deputies. Due to his actions and for officer safety, he was ordered to place his hands behind his back. Instead, he pulled away, reached in his pocket and threw something towards the wood line east of the road. During the course of searching the vehicle and the grass, drugs and drug paraphernalia were discovered. Tommy James Frazier was arrested for Resisting Arrest Search or Transport, Possession of a Controlled Substance and Tampering with or fabricating evidence.
At 7:22 p.m., cows were reported out on CR 2954 east of 1668 in Alba.
At 11:12 p.m., cows were reported out on 2088 west of 14.
February 6th
Deputies were dispatched to Village Circle in Yantis. The complainant reported that an unknown person assaulted her and stole her purse when she arrived at the location. She found her purse on the ground, but was missing several items out of her purse. This case is forwarded to investigators for follow-up.
At 10:16 a.m., cows were reported out on FM 2869 at CR 4620 in Winnsboro.
At 11:19 a.m., cows were reported out, but not located on FM 312, 4 miles outside of Winnsboro.
At 12:29 p.m., cows were reported out, but not located on CR 1316 near FM 2225.
The Sheriff’s Office received a call from a citizen to make a report that an unknown person had added 2 new numbers to her phone account without her consent. Verizon will handle this matter.
At 10:26 p.m., cows were reported out on FM 2869 on the Lake Hawkins Bridge.
February 7th
Deputies were dispatched to CR 3450 in Hawkins in regard to the possible death of a 57 year old female. EMS was already on the scene and the individual was determined to be deceased. An autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death. The investigation is ongoing.

Hopkins County Jail Housing Former Wood County Jail Administrator
Wood County Sheriff’s Office Jail Administrator David McGee, resigned his position during the course of an investigation into an allegation of possible inappropriate contact between him and a former inmate of the Wood County jail. On February 8, 2017, McGee was arrested and charged with two counts of Tampering with a government document and facilitating escape. He is being housed in Hopkins County Jail under bonds totaling $200,000. The arrest for his actions with the former inmate, Samantha Melvin, came as a result of investigation by the Texas Ranger. Melvin was also arrested and charged with escape. She is currently in Wood County Jail on a $50,000 bond.
When the allegations were made known, the Wood County Sheriff’s Office immediately contacted the Texas Rangers and an independent investigation was opened. Records in the case have been sealed from release by the Wood County District Judge.
SSISD Board Meets Monday
Sulphur Springs School Board meets Monday, February 13th at 6 p.m. for their February session. The board will conduct a public hearing on the 2015-2016 Texas Academic Performance Report and a public hearing on considering designation of the SSISD as a District of Innovation. The Racial profiling report by SSISD police will be presented along with other administrative reports. Several items related to the district of innovation will be considered as will approval of Public Schools Week in SSISD and approval of a board election.
In executive session the board will consider hiring a principal at the Early Childhood Learning Center following the retirement of Principal Sherry Finney. Other personnel and the superintendent’s evaluation are on the executive session agenda.

Three Arrested for Endangering Children in Vehicle at County Building
Three children were left in a Black GMC Yukon in the parking lot in front of the County Attorney, County Clerk, Tax Office building Friday afternoon. Although temperatures were in the 70’s, one the children was found to be sweating profusely and unresponsive.
Hopkins County Deputies were dispatched to the scene in reference to the children being locked in the vehicle. It took 60-seconds for a response from a deputy driving by at the time. The officer pulled his vehicle behind the Yukon and verified the children inside the locked vehicle. He also observed three individuals, two females and one male, crossing the street. The male subject ran across the street to get into the driver’s side and refused to make contact with the officer. The officer told him to exit the vehicle.

While this is happening, a female ran to the passenger side of the vehicle and attempted to get into the vehicle. Other officers arrived at that time. One of the females who entered the vehicle took the infant from the seat and began to wipe the sweat from the child wiping the sweat with her clothing. The car seat was found to be wet from the child’s perspiration. The children had been in the vehicle for 20-minutes. The vehicle was not running and no windows were down. With temperatures in the mid-70’s the temperature inside the vehicle could reach 105 to 110 degrees according to the report.
Three children were found inside the vehicle. A three year old, an infant approximately five months old, and the unresponsive two month old infant were inside. EMS and CPS were called to the scene. An emergency removal of the children was enacted by CPS and medical treatment given.

Blanca Vargas-Aguila
David Vizcaino, 30, (no picture available), was arrested for Abandon Endanger Child Imminent Danger and his bond is set at $40,000. Blanca Vargas-Aguilar was arrested for Abandon Endanger Child Imminent Danger and for Tamper Fabricate Evident with intent to impair and her bonds total $60,000. Maria Araceli Arrendondo was arrested for Abandon Endanger Child Imminent Danger and for Tamper Fabricate Evident with intent to impair and her bonds total $60,000. Abandonment of a Child in this instance is a Felony 2 under Texas Law.
Two Arrested In Traffic Stop at Courthouse Released on Bond; Information in Arrest Report
John Hearn, Jr. and Sarah Dannilynn Moses, 30 were released on bond following their arrest in front of the Hopkins County Courthouse Friday morning. Hearn was charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance Penalty Group 1, over 4-grams but less than 200 grams and bond was set at $50,000. Moses was charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance Penalty Group 1, over 4-grams but less than 200 grams in a Drug Free Zone and bond was set at $50,000. She was also charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance Penalty Group 3 in a drug free zone and bond was set at $10,000 for that charge.

The arrest of the pair came following a traffic stop that caused a traffic backed up on Celebration Plaza prior to 9 a.m. Friday morning. Investigator Wade Sheets initiated the traffic stop and soon called for additional backup after he observed classic signs of criminal activity in the actions of the two occupants in vehicle.

According to the police report received Saturday morning: When the traffic stop was made Hearn, the driver, showed signs of nervousness and possible criminal activity. He stated he was taking the female, Moses, to court. When Moses came to the car, she also appeared extremely nervous and showed signs of possible criminal activity. She stated she had to get into the courtroom and pay child support. She was told she could go to court. Instead of doing that this female stood on the front steps of the courthouse watching. The male subject gave consent to search the vehicle, which was registered to him. During the search, in plain view was located a clear baggie with suspected hydrocodone inside. A probable cause search was conducted. In the trunk was located bag with marijuana and digital scales inside. On the scales was an amount of methamphetamine residue. Both denied ownership of the bag, scales, and marijuana. Both subjects were placed in custody. A Sentry Safe was located in the vehicle, and neither subject admitted to having a key or ownership. The vehicle was taken to the Sheriff’s office. There the safe was opened and inside was located a black bag. Inside the bag was a white baggie with a large amount of crystal like substance believed to be methamphetamine. The baggie and contents weighed approximately 65-grams. There were several empty baggies as well. These baggies were smaller and consistent with packaging of narcotics for distribution. Both subjects were booked into the Hopkins County jail.
Senior Night: Wildcats Blast Greenville, Face Hallsville Tuesday: Prepare for Playoffs
Wildcats senior Ke’Ontae Dunn had a very memorable Senior Night scoring 26 points as the Wildcats blasted Greenville, 74-28 Friday night in Wildcats Gym. Dunn’s big game included 4 three-pointers. Victor Iwuakor and Michael Jefferson added 10 points apiece for the Wildcats.
The Wildcats led by 10 points at the half, 31-21 but then blew the game wide open outscoring Greenville in the second half, 43-7. The Wildcats two seniors, Dunn and Dane Rutherford, were both honored before the game. Rutherford started and scored 5 points including a three pointer.
The Wildcats are now 9-2 in district play and 24-6 for the season. The Wildcats are one win away from tying the school record for most wins in a season. The Wildcats wrap up the regular season with a road district game at Hallsville next Tuesday night.
The Wildcats will finished second in the district and will face the #3 team in District 15-5A in a bi-district game.
Handball Give Tigers Edge Over Wildcats
Mt. Pleasant broke a scoreless tie with a successful penalty kick early in the second half and then added an insurance goal later to defeat the Wildcats’ soccer team, 2-0 at the SSHS Track Complex soccer field Friday night. Both teams went scoreless during the first half.
Just seconds into the second half, the Wildcats were called for a handball, which resulted in a penalty kick. The result gives the Wildcats one win, two losses and a shootout loss in four district games. The Wildcats are 8-3-2 for the season.
The Wildcats will play at Greenville next Tuesday night.

Lady Cats Soccer 3-1 in District with Overtime Win in Mt Pleasant
The Lady Cats’ soccer team improved to 3-1 in district play as they defeated Mt. Pleasant, 2-1 in overtime, on the road Friday night. Both teams went scoreless in the first half and both teams scored a goal in the second half sending the game into overtime. After a scoreless first half of overtime, the Lady Cats scored in the second half of overtime and held on to win. The Lady Cats are 8-4-2 for the season.
The Lady Cats will play Greenville next Tuesday at the SSHS Track Complex soccer field.

Lady Cats Softball Opens Regular Season With Home Tourney Thursday
Lady Cats Softball Coach David Carrillo reported that the Lady Cats’ softball team, featuring JV players for four innings and varsity players for six innings defeated North Lamar, 8-5 in a fourth and last scrimmage game Friday night at Lady Cat Park.
Landri Bell, Bailey Haggerty and Alli Fite all pitched for the Lady Cats. Coach Carrillo said Fite pitched the last six innings giving up one earned run and four hits with 12 strikeouts and 2 walks. Jaye Doughtie led the hitting attack with two bunt singles. At the end of scrimmage season, Coach Carrillo called it one of the toughest we’ve had in a long time. He said the team faced a lot of great pitching. He said the challenging scrimmages would be a great building block for what is ahead.
The Lady Cats open the regular season at home in their three-day Sulphur Springs Varsity Softball Tournament next Thursday.
