Homecoming Week, Car Give-Away Fill Plaza Saturday

Perhaps the largest crowd of the season gathered during the Saturday Evening Market on Celebration Plaza to celebrate the start of Homecoming Week for Sulphur Springs schools and to anxiously anticipate the possibility of winning their choice of one of 14 new cars offered by Sulphur Springs Jeep Chrysler Dodge. Jeff Shelton began the early evening Homecoming activities when he introduced Wildcat Head Coach Greg Owens who introduced the SSHS Cheerleaders and members of the 2015 varsity squad. The Downtown business Association provided activities for all ages during the day.

Activities prior to the evenings give-away and music included bounce houses, slides and a water slide on Main Street, which had been blocked off for the day’s activities. Regular venues were also overrun with activity. From vendors to chess and checkers to the water feature filled with children, laughter and conversation filled the plaza. Music and a video were also planned.

After the must-be-present-to-win give-way, much of the crowd began leaving the Plaza as streets clogged with pedestrians and autos.

WILLIAMS, JAMES CHARLES

It will be next week before James Charles Williams, Jr. will be extradited from Little Rock, Arkansas to Sulphur Springs according to local Police Chief Jay Sanders. U S Marshalls located and arrested the 56-year old Williams in Little Rock Thursday, September 3rd, after an arrest warrant was issued by local authorities. The warrant listed two specific charges related to a June 20th event in Sulphur Springs that occurred on a parking lot at a vet clinic located on I-30. The two charges were impersonating a peace officer on the street, and theft, a state jail felony.

Williams is also a suspect in the robbery that took place at Days Inn in Sulphur Springs around 6 p.m. Saturday, August 30th. That robbery was one of several committed over the past weekend. Sanders, said the department, along with other police departments along the I-30 corridor continue their investigations into last weekend’s string of robberies and thefts that took place from Rockwall to Texarkana along the interstate.

In February, 2007, Williams was arrested after a traffic stop for possession of a phony badge. At that time, a string of robberies from Little Rock to West Memphis, Arkansas were tied to the arrest. Police confiscated a fake badge when Williams was arrested. According to a Little Rock ABC affiliate news story at that time, truck drivers traveling through the state were often victims when approached at motel rooms.

Memorial Hospital Celebrates 66th Birthday

Although no formal events have been planned, Hopkins County Memorial Hospital celebrates its 66th birthday Saturday, September 5.  The hospital replaced private, small hospitals owned and operated by doctors in the area. The hospital was established by business leaders in 1949 and later the state legislature created a hospital district for Memorial. The hospital has never been owned or operated by the county but rather by the hospital tax district with an elected governing board.

Sherry Moore, Director of Marketing, told KSST news that Dr. Joe Longino, long time doctor in the community who was a part of the move to Memorial, had shared all the physicians in town put all their patients into the new hospital for $6 per day and the doctors charged $5 a day for two visits each day. Moore credited men such as Dr. Longino, Bill Bradford, and others for their work in making the hospital a reality.

A Moment of Silence for Law Enforcement; Chief Sanders Thanks All Involved

A minute of silence was observed by law enforcement across the state of Texas Friday at 11 a.m. On Celebration Plaza city, county, and state law enforcement officers along with firemen and cadets paused to honor the life of Harris County Deputy Darren Goforth, 47. Goforth was gunned down as he was pumping gas into his car shortly after working an accident scene. Funeral services for Goforth began at 11 a.m. in the worship center of Second Baptist Church in Houston. Locally, officers received a call from dispatch noting the minute of silence. Lights on patrol vehicles were turned on and silence prevailed over a crowd of well over one hundred citizens and officers who had assembled.

Chief Jay Sanders said the event turned into a special event. He said paying tribute to Harris County Deputy Darren Goforth unified many in a day to remember and honor Goforth in his death and all officers for the commitment they have made to serve the public in keeping the law. Sanders expressed to KSST the thanks and appreciation of law enforcement to those who attended the event. Pointing out that 10 law enforcement officers had been killed in the line of duty in the past 14 days alone, he said individual officers felt they had a target on their back, especially when they are in uniform.

Sanders praised Hopkins County and city residents for the support given to law enforcement officers. He has concluded 30 years in law enforcement and 28th year locally. He said he would not want to be in any other place.
