Comics creators, Los Bros Hernandez, to Speak at A & M-Commerce

searchCOMMERCE, TX— Texas A&M University-Commerce is excited to host Jaime and Gilbert Hernandez on Thursday, October 15, 2015. The brothers, along with another brother, Mario, are the authors of the long-running comic book series Love and Rockets.  Los Bros Hernandez, as they are known, also have produced multiple works as individual authors and illustrators. The brothers independently published their first issue of Love and Rockets in 1981, and within a year, Seattle-based publisher Fantagraphics Books became the primary outlet for their work.  Love and Rockets focuses on character relationships and their development as opposed to traditional comic book themes of superheroes and villains. The brothers have been nominated for multiple awards including Harvey, Ignatz, and Eisner.  Gilbert received the Best Writer and Best Continuing Series Harvey in 1989, Best Writer/Artist Harvey in 1991, and Best New Series Harvey in 1999 for Luba. Jaime received the Best Artist Harvey and Best Single Issue Harvey for Penny Century in 1999.

Dr. Christopher González of Texas A&M University-Commerce’s Department of Literature and Languages describes the Hernandez Brothers as iconic voices in the comics world: “Los Bros are truly royalty in the comics industry. The longevity of their work, now in its fourth decade, speaks to the power and artistry of their stories. They are to alternative comics what Art Spiegelman is to the graphic novel, what Jack Kirby is to the superhero comic, what Charles Schulz is to the comic strip. Perhaps most importantly, Jaime and Gilbert achieved their success without compromising their determination to depict Latinos as complex humans rather than as stereotypes.”

They will be speaking in Ferguson Auditorium on the campus of A&M-Commerce at 4 p.m.  Admission is free, and the event is open to the public. The Hernandez brothers’ visit is possible due to a grant Latino Americans: 500 Years of History awarded to A&M-Commerce Libraries. Latino Americans: 500 Years of History supports the American public’s exploration of the rich and varied history and experiences of Latinos who have helped shape the United States over the last five centuries and who have become, numbering more than 50 million people, the country’s largest minority group.

The cornerstone of the project is the six-part documentary film, “Latino Americans,” created for PBS in 2013 by the WETA public television station and supported by the National Endowment for the Humanities. The award-winning series chronicles Latinos in the United States from the 16th century to present day. (Learn more about the series at www.pbs.org/latino-americans/en/.)

Latino Americans: 500 Years of History is offered by the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) and the American Library Association (ALA). It is part of an NEH initiative, The Common Good: The Humanities in the Public Square.

SSHS Marching Band Prepares for Area Following District Division I Rating

marchingband 3The Wildcats Marching Band earned a one rating at UIL Competition Tuesday and they also advanced to Area competition later this month. Wildcats Band Director Charles McCauley said that inspite of the heat, it was a really good day for the band.

October 24th is the date for Area competition. Area competition will be at Mesquite Memorial Statdium. McCauley said the SSHS band will be one of the first bands to perform because the district is set to be first. McCauley said he would rather be later in the day but there is not option to change. He pointed out that bands from schools located 90 miles or more away from the location of the contest do not perform until after 1 p.m. Therefore, Mt Pleasant and Texarkana will perform in the afternoon. Sulphur Springs is 80 miles from the stadium.

Saturday, October 17, the band will be in competition at Prairlie Land as they prepare for Area.

Animal of the Week: Blue the Chow Mix

Animal of the Week: Blue the Chow Mix

Blue is a female, 10 month old Chow mix. All other breeds she may be mixed with cannot be confirmed, as she appears to contain a mix of many different breeds, with Chow being the most prominant. Blue was found along with a now adopted Pit Bull mix on the intersection of Church and Park Streets. Both dogs wore collars with no tags and appeared to be travelling together. The Animal Shelter has concluded that Blue and the adopted Pit were dumped by their previous owner. Blue attended the off-site adoption on Saturday, October 10 and received much attention, but none interested in adoption.

“She is great around people, and she’d be awesome around older kids,” Animal Shelter Officer Barbi Blanch said. “We always recommend dogs for older kids, because little kids tend to pull hairs, tails, and ears. As far as I know, she is ok with cats and excellent with dogs.”

Blue has recieved training on leash-walking, as has all other dogs at the Animal Shelter. The Shelter officers always leash-train all the dogs put up for adoption. She has also picked up early forms of potty training.

“It’s very possible that everything we have in the Shelter right now is maybe house-broken, because they’re getting to spend more time outside,” Officer Blanch said. “When we came in this morning, there was absolutely nothing in any kennel. Blue knows what ‘outside’ means for sure, and she tends to go outside. The kennels, all of them right now, are completely empty.”

She enjoys playing with various dog toys. Blue has yet to be claimed by her original owners and Animal Shelter officers are attempting to track down her original owners. Shelter officers have always had difficulties tracking down people who dumped animals.

“It’s hard, unless you actually have proof of someone witnessing it,” Officer Blanch said. “It’s hard to track down the one who dumped it. Whether they’re the owner or not, it’s illegal to dump. There are a couple of cases that I’m trying to see what I can do on right now, but we’re kind of at a standstill on whether they will actually prosecute it.”
