Haystack Choir Ends Season at Jamboree

The Haystacks Choir wrapped up a season of music at the Reilly Springs Jamboree on December 19, 2015. Their fundraising campaign for the 2016 New York Summer Tour also came to an end when three prize winners were chosen. Two 40-inch Smart TV’s went to Joyce Davis and Dena Mills, and an iPad Mini was claimed by Carissa Carter. Under the direction of Kevin Wooley, the Haystacks Choir is a 30-voice group of high-school students who attend Rains, Saltillo, North Hopkins and Sulphur Springs ISD’s. Julian Retires As News Director; Continues Sports For KSST

Don1KSST’s Don Julian has enjoyed a long and illustrious career in covering sports and news in Texas radio and TV markets. For 12 years, he has served as News and Sports Director for KSST Radio and Channel 18TV. Tune in to hear some of his favorite stories in a half-hour interview with Enola Gay on the Morning Show starting at 8:15am Tuesday December 22. Though he is announcing his retirement as News Director for KSST and Channel 18 TV as of December 31, 2015, he plans to continue as KSST’s Sports Director.

Julian has served as KSST’s News and Sports Director since March, 2006. He came to Sulphur Springs after stints at KRZI Radio, where he was News Director and Morning Show Co-Host and at Baylor NPR radio station, KWBU. Prior to that Julian was News Director at KTEM radio in Temple. The radio jobs followed a 15-year career in Public Television, first as News and Public Affairs Director and later as Program Manager at KVIE-TV in Sacramento, California. His early broadcasting career, after graduating from Baylor University, took place in Central Texas as Assistant Sports Director and News Reporter and later Waco Bureau Chief at KCEN-TV in Temple/Waco, then as a reporter for KTEM radio in Temple and as Assistant News Director and Bell County Bureau Chief at KWTX-TV in Waco.

Follow KSST Sports in 2016 as Don follows the Cats and gathers stories from the Texas A and M Commerce Lions and Hopkins County schools. The Coach’s Show with Don Julian will also retain it’s long-standing time slot at 9am Saturdays, simulcast on KSST and Channel 18 TV.

Power Outage Affect 400 in Eastern Hopkins County

searchSometime around noon Sunday, December 20th, approximately 400 customers of Oncor line maintenance were affected by a power outage. A vehicle striking an electrical service pole is said to be the cause of the outage, according to Oncor. Oncor expected to restore service around 8 p.m. Sunday evening.

The area affected by the outage stretched from just east of the Sulphur Springs city limits to the Mahoney Community. As of 6 p.m., a caller from the Mahoney area said his power had not been restored. Families celebrating an early Christmas, brunch and lunch at the Sulphur Springs Country Club, and other activities were either canceled or limited due to the outage.

Commissioners Court to Discuss Open Carry Signage

The Hopkins County Commissioners Court is expected to take up the issue of new open carry law signage this week.  Monday at 10 a.m. in a work session in their third floor meeting room, the court will consider sign placement at the County Courthouse and at county buildings.

During a regular meeting Tuesday at 9 a.m., the court is expected to approve the signs.  They will also officially approve decommissioning and demolition of the old county jail.  A lot of the jail has already been demolished.  In a work session after the regular meeting, the court is schedule to discuss the Civic Center, environmental issues, county phone service and the budget.

Later Tuesday during a 1:30 p.m. work session at the Sedalco Office Building at 201 East Houston, the court is scheduled to discuss new jail construction, county records destruction, radio towers for the county and the budget.

Local Man Assaults, Threatens Girl Friend

VelanzquezA 33-year old Sulphur Springs man was arrested Friday night for assaulting and then threatening his girlfriend.  Sulphur Springs Police officers responded to a disturbance call at a residence in the 100 block of South Como in Sulphur Springs at around 7:30 p.m. Friday.  When they arrived, a man admitted assaulting his girl friend.  She had injuries.  As the man was being arrested, he said something in Spanish.  Another man told officers he had said when he was released from jail, he was going to kill his girlfriend.  The girlfriend believed him.  The man is expected to have a magistrate’s hearing Sunday.

Edgar Antonio Velasquez of Sulphur Springs is charges of Assault Family Violence and Terroristic Threat. Bond for Valesquezwas set at $15,000 for each charge.

Birthright UMC Christmas Eve Candlelight Service

candlelightBirthright United Methodist Church will celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ at a special candlelight service on Thursday evening, Christmas Eve.

The public is invited to attend this special service that will begin at 6 p.m. and feature Christmas hymns, a special message by Pastor Paul Bailey, and the celebration of Holy Communion and lighting of the candles.

Birthright United Methodist Church is located on Highway 71, one mile east of Highway 19 north. Just turn east at Joe Bob’s Store in Birthright.

Wildcats Pick Up Win Before Break

basketballThe Wildcats’ basketball team won a non-district game against Emory Rains, 56-43 Friday afternoon on the road.  Wildcats Coach Clark Cipoletta said all team members got to play and they all contributed.  Bryson Lynn led the Wildcats with 16 points, Ke’Ontae Dunn added 10.  Keaston Willis chipped in 8 points and Michael Arnold scored 7.  The Wildcats improved their season record to 6-7.  After the Christmas break, the Wildcats will play in a Kaufman tournament on December 28-29.

Lady Cats Overwhelm Marshall 50-13

Varsity Lady Cats 2016The Lady Cats’ basketball team jumped out to a 17-3 first quarter lead and then outscored Marshall 15-0 in the second quarter to take a 32-3 halftime lead on the way to a 50-13 victory Friday night in Wildcats Gym.  A tenacious defense by the Lady Cats stifled the Lady Mavs’ offense.  Kaylee Jefferson led the Lady Cats with 16 points and Sadavia Porter and Lexie Moore added 9 points each.  The Lady Cats evened their district record at 1-1.  They are now 12-4 for the season.  The Lady Cats will host Texas High Monday at 1:30 p.m. in Wildcats Gym.  After Christmas, the Lady Cats will play in an Idabel, Oklahoma tournament December 28-30
