Wildcats, Lady Cats Make All-District Soccer Teams
Twelve Wildcats and nine Lady Cats made the All-District Soccer Teams released Monday, April 15.
For the Wildcats, center midfielder Kevin Yanez, wing and fullback Andrew Escobar and forward Enrique Arellano were named First Team All-District. Center midfielder and forward Alexis Escobedo, center back David Moreno and goalkeeper Noe Ponce were selected to the Second Time All-District. Wing and Forward Omar Hernandez, center back Nabian Ramirez, center midfielder Miguel Rubio, center back Bryant Sanchez, center midfielder Jose Salazar and forward Daniel Moreno were all chosen Honorable Mention All-District.
The All-District team is selected by the district’s coaches who can not vote for any of their own players.
For the Lady Cats, forward Keeley Hudgins and goalkeeper McKenna Gammill were named to the First Team All-District. Defender Alli Stephens, forward Haley Robinson and midfielder Janine Yamaguchi were chosen to the Second Team All-District. Defender Brooke Harden, defender Shelby McCormick, midfielder Ashley Noe and defender Erika VanBenthem were selected Honorable Mention All-District.

Louisiana, Georgia Men Reportedly Caught With Stolen Checks
Sulphur Springs police arrested two men Monday on a charge of theft-stealing or receiving a stolen check or similar sight order.
Police reported responding about 12:25 p.m. Monday to a complaint of a burglary in progress at a Gilmer Street auto business. Upon arrival, they contacted two men: a 39-year-old from Independence, Louisiana and a 37-year-old from Atlanta, Georgia.
Officers reportedly discovered several stolen checks on them, and a review of store surveillance of the alleged burglary revealed the pair working together, resulting in both men being arrested on the charge, police alleged in arrest reports.
City Closer To Gaining Ownership Of Old Thermo Mine Property
Sulphur Springs is one step closer to owning the Thermo mine property; the city receive the draft water permit, according to City Manager Marc Maxwell.
“For the city, that’s a major milestone passed in gaining ownership of the property,” said Sulphur Springs City Manager Marc Maxwell.
There are still two steps, related to the bridge and road, to be achieved before that can occur, however, the city manger said.
If those matters can be worked out with state and county officials, the city could own the property by the end of the year, which Maxwell said would be a “game changer for the city.”

- Deputies were dispatched to County Road 2482 near Mineola, at approximately 7:32 a.m., in reference to an assault that occurred. David Wilson, 40, of Mineola, was arrested for Assault Causes Bodily Injury Family Violence.
- Deputies responded to a suspicious vehicle on County Road 2298 near Alba; at approximately 11:07 a.m. Deputies located the vehicle and everything was OK.
- Deputies spoke with the reporting party, at approximately 12:35 p.m., in reference to harassment on County Road 2482 near Mineola. Deputies gave the reporting party advice and cleared the incident.
- Deputies went on an arrest/warrant service to the Wood County Sheriff’s Office lobby; at approximately 1:16 p.m. Glen Usry, 57, of Hawkins, was arrested for an outstanding warrant.

- Deputies were dispatched to FM 2966 near Yantis, at approximately 8:27 a.m., in reference to an unauthorized use of a motor vehicle. A known actor took the reporting party’s vehicle without authorization. The vehicle was recovered, after the known actor wrecked it. Daniel Meade, 20, of Yantis, was arrested for Driving While Intoxicated and outstanding warrants.
- Deputies were dispatched to FM 17 near Alba, at approximately 1:03 p.m., in reference to a dispute. Deputies made contact with the reporting party and cleared the incident.
- Deputies spoke with the reporting party, at approximately 3:53 p.m., in reference to terroristic threat on Holly Hill Circle near Hawkins. Deputies made contact with the actor and issued a Criminal Trespass Warning.

- Deputies were dispatched to Highway 11 near Leesburg, at approximately 8:03 a.m., in reference to an open door. Actors, or actors unknown, rummaged through the reporting party’s residence, but nothing appeared to be missing. This case has been forwarded to investigators.

- Deputies spoke with the reporting party, at approximately 8:47 a.m., in reference to a scam on Cypress Cove near Hawkins. Deputies gave the reporting party advice and cleared the incident.
- Deputies were dispatched to FM 1795 near Hawkins, at approximately 9:18 a.m., in reference to criminal mischief. Actors, or actors unknown, damaged the reporting party’s property.

SSHS State UIL Essay Finalists, Academic Qualifiers Named
Barbara Jordan Historical Essay and Latino History Essay Competitions
UIL Academics sponsors two essay competitions that provide exciting opportunities for students to explore the contributions of historically underrepresented groups to the history and culture of Texas. With a focus on original research and the use of primary sources, students are encouraged to look to their own communities in finding topics for their essays.
This year, Sulphur Springs High School has 4 students who are state finalists in the essay competitions. Sydney Washburn and Breana Wooten are finalists in the Barbara Jordan Essay competition. Rachel Bramlett and Annmarie Gunn are finalists in the Latino History Essay competition. These students will attend an award ceremony and have their essays placed in the Texas State Historical Archives at the University of Texas.
Region UIL Academic Meet
Region 2 Academic UIL Championships were held on Friday, April 12, and Saturday, April 13, at Prosper High School.
On Friday, Ready Writing, Journalism and Computer Science contests were held.
Annmarie Gunn finished 3rd in Ready writing and Angela Brown finished 2nd in News Writing. Both girls advance to state on May 2 – May 4. Angela also earned 4th place (alternate to state) in Editorial Writing.
Brayden Fisher received a medal for placing 5th in Computer Science, and the Computer Science team consisting of Fisher, Dakota Soles, Kevin Orozco and Blake Talmage earned medals for third place in a very strong regional field.
On Saturday, all other academic events were held.
In Spelling and Vocabulary, Dawson Carpenter earned 4th place,and was name an alternate to state and Mariam Tran earned 6th place.
The Spelling and Vocabulary team made up of Carpenter, Tran, Gisselle Garcia and Cameron Beard earned 2nd place as a team, making the group an alternate to state.
SSHS’s Literary Criticism Team made up of Carissa Carter, Matthew Harper, Andrew Westlund and Lainey Whittle earned a regional championship in the last competition of the day. Carissa Carter led the team with a state high 92 points for first place. Matthew Harper was a close 2nd. Andrew Westlund and Lainey Whittle rounded out an outstanding team performance with 4th an 5th place finishes respectively.
Saltillo Scholarship Banquet/Auction a Success
The Kerry W. Garmon gym was filled with Saltillo school and community friends and families who turned out to make sure the 8th annual Memorial Scholarship fundraiser was a success. Following a welcome by Superintendent David Stickels and a thank you to the many sponsors who made the evening possible, everyone sat down to a great meal catered by Andy Wright and family, followed by some fun games of Bingo and a lively auction commanded by Saltillo alumnus, auctioneer Travis Mitchell. There was also an Election of Officers for the Foundation, conducted by Vivian Monzingo. The highlight of the evening was hearing the six scholarship recipients from 2018 relate how the funds they received have helped this year in furthering their education as they work toward careers.
2018 Saltillo graduate Miss Madison Simmons was first to speak. She is currently a Freshman at Texas A and M University Commerce and will be a Sophomore in the Fall of 2019.
Miss Jordan Sustaire is attending Tarleton State University as pursuing Ag Services Development. She will be a Sophomore this Fall, and plans to become an Ag teacher. As she put it, “In my four years of FFA at Saltillo, my Ag teachers were a big positive influence on me. I’d like to help influence someone else’s life that way”.
Miss Sylvia Feijen attended Saltillo ISD from Pre-k through her graduation in 2018. She is now attending Paris Jr. College, pursuing a career in Real Estate and Property Management, and has been selected to the All-Texas Academic Team. She plans a transfer next year to University of North Texas, Denton.
Miss Christy Gurley is a fourth-generation Saltillo graduate. She congratulated the Foundation on their scholarships selections, and says the Banquet/Auction represents the heart of the Saltillo school and community.
Miss Adriana Ortega is attending college in Chicago, Illinois working towards a nursing degree. She plans a career in Pediatric Nursing. She came home for the banquet in order to thank the Foundation and school officials for the scholarship and their vote of confidence.
Another scholarship recipient, Trevor Moore, was unable to attend the banquet due to an emergency, but sent his appreciation to the school and the Scholarship Foundation.
Selection for this year’s scholarship recipients will soon be made. The Foundation Officers for 2018/2019 are Kim Moore, Barry Brewer, Guy Hatch, Karen Northcutt, Brenda Garmon, Davis Stickels, Vivian Dennis Monzingo and Lyda Hatch. In the Election conducted during the Banquet, three officers were selected to fill openings beginning May 1 for the 2019/2020 year; Vicky Longino, Barry Brewer and Guy Hatch. Karen Northcutt was given a special round of applause for her numerous consecutive terms as an officer.
Texarkana Man Jailed On Warrant, Marijuana Charge
A traffic stop lead to a warrant arrest and location of a vacuum-sealed package of marijuana.
According to arrest reports, Texas Department of Public Safety Trooper Chris Sorley stopped a Chevrolet passenger car at 7:21 p.m. Sunday on Interstate 30 at mile marker 132 for speeding. A routine driver’s license check showed 29-year-old Kiara Rashaud Sherman of Texarkana to be wanted in Bowie County for failure to appear on a possession of marijuana charge, resulting in Sherman’s arrest.
Sorley reported inventorying the vehicle so it could be released to Sherman’s brother and, during the process found a vacuum-sealed bag of marijuana in a backpack in the trunk. Sherman allegedly admitted the marijuana was his and took full responsibility for it, resulting in him being charged with possession of 4 ounces or more but less than 5 pounds of marijuana as well, according to arrest reports.
Police: 1 Taken Into Custody, Investigation Into Rash of Vehicle Burglaries Ongoing
A teen was taken into custody early Sunday morning during an investigation into a series of vehicle burglaries in Sulphur Springs over the weekend, according to police.
Interviews in connection with the cases were in progress Monday morning by police detectives, with additional charges possible in connection with the vehicle burglaries pending the ongoing investigation, police said Monday.
The juvenile was allegedly detained by police while walking in a neighborhood after 1 a.m. Monday, and later taken into custody, according to police reports.
Overall, police took reports of at least nine vehicle burglaries from location throughout Sulphur Springs over the weekend. Nearly all of the vehicles from which items were reported stolen were said to have been been left unlocked, according to police reports.
