Fire at Waste Water Treatment Plant Raises Sludge Question
Fortunately the city of Sulphur Springs Wastewater Treatment Plant was not damaged by a fire reported at that location on Labor Day just after 1 p.m. According to City Manager Marc Maxwell, the fire occurred in equipment of a company that has a contract with the city to process city sludge from the plant. Local Man Points Gun at Mother, Cousin During Disturbance
A 20-year old Sulphur Springs man was arrested by police Monday at around 10:40 p.m. for allegedly pointing a gun at his mother and cousin during a disturbance at a residence in the 500 block of Locust. Justen Blake Saffel was formally charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon before Justice of the Peace Brad Cummings who set bond on Saffel at $50,000.
Trafficking Trial Postponed Until October
A jury trial in 8th Judicial District Court scheduled to begin Tuesday morning, September 8, has been postponed until October. The jury was dismissed and a new jury will be picked to the October trial of 51-year old Franklin Coy Kuhl, Jr. charged with trafficking a child for the purpose of engaging in sexual conduct. County Fire Units Respond to Cumby Fire
Several Hopkins County fire units responded to a report of a structure fire Saturday at 12:35 p.m. It was reported on County Road 1126 in the Cumby area. First fire unit on the scene reported a travel trailer was fully involved with fire. A fire unit from the Central County fire station was joined by trucks from Miller Grove, Cumby and Peerless. Firefighters reportedly put the fire out quickly. There were no injuries reported.

Wednesday morning, Justice of the Peace B. J. Teer set bond at $75,000 for 33-year old Miranda Marie Bazaldua of Sulphur Springs. Bazaldua was arrested Sunday night just after 10:30 p.m. after she reportedly threatened her mother with a knife. Hopkins County Sheriff’s Sgt.
