County Jail Out of Compliance
The current Hopkins County Jail was found to be out of compliance with state jail standards after an inspection Thursday. Sheriff Butch Adams explains the problem, which he says will be rectified right away.
The inspection of the current jail facility noted paperwork on inmate recreation was short of standards. Sheriff Adams said that for the next month his staff will make sure the paperwork is prepared properly. That paperwork will be forwarded to the state accrediting agency. The jail will be returned to compliance when the paperwork is approved by the state agency.
Adams said the local jail is required to allow three hours per week of recreation. He stated that the local jail allows most inmates an hour per day three days a week. Adams said the inmates are receiving the opportunity but the paperwork accounting refusals and other information is not available. Adams said one day recently it was thought enough staff to supervise would not be available but he said that is never true. Adams said “We will have this turned around.”
Cash Taken From ATM in Birthright
Local law enforcement is seeking citizen help regarding a break-in in Birthright. The Hopkins County Sheriff’s Department is investigating a case where an ATM was broken into with some cash taken. The incident occurred at a convenience store in Birthright either overnight Wednesday or early Thursday morning. Sheriff’s Chief Criminal Investigator Lewis Tatum gave KSST News an update on the investigation at a news conference Friday morning.
Tatum said three suspects have been discovered as the local sheriff’s office has been investigating the break-in. The investigation shows that the break-in occurred around 1 a.m. Suspects were wearing masks and gloves. Lewis said that anyone knowing someone who has come up with a large amount of cash that previously did not have access to cash, or anything suspicious in nature, please notify the Sheriff’s Department. Tatum said a large amount of cash was taken. He said the perpetrators broke into the side of the ATM and took the cash box.
Brashear News
Brashear News
Wow what a beautiful morning. It was 51 degrees this morning in my part of Brashear. Simply beautiful.
Brashear is proud to announce we now have a Barber Shop in town. It is located on the Spur 67 on your east out of town and on the right hand side of the road. Stop by and check it out.
We want to thank the county workers for mowing the ditches. It makes the roads look so nice.
Tom’s fall garden is growing. We have blooms on our squash plants and I think some turnip greens popping up too, voluntarily. We are still getting okra. If interested, let me know.
Can someone help out with the name of the flowers that are popping up right now? I have always just called them spider lilies but would like to know their official name. They are red and have no leaves. Thanks for helping out.
I want all of our prayer warriors to be on the lookout for those in need of prayer in our small piece of the world. I would love to know their name and their needs. I want to make sure everyone is covered in prayer in their everyday life. Just call me or email me at 903.612.8806; or [email protected]. Please pray for those in Roseburg, Oregon where the mass shooting was yesterday.
We saw some geese flying over on Tuesday night so I feel fall is really here. This is something I look forward to every year. Isn’t amazing what a plan our God has that he sends the birds where they need to go before it is too cold. The dove are back in full force isn’t it funny they know Dove season is over.
On days like today, it is beautiful in our neck of the woods. We can hear cars and trucks on the FM 3389 to our east and cars and trucks on the road to Miller Grove (can’t remember the farm to marked road number), and the train and interstate noise to the north is loud and clear.
How are your pecan trees doing? We have noticed a lot of the trees in town are loaded with pecans. If anyone needs them to be picked, let us know. The crows are starting to circle our one large tree. We hope to get some of the pecans before the crows and our squirrel.
Of course, I want to ask you to pray for rain. Can you believe how dry it is after all of the rain we had in the spring? The leaves are curling and dropping from the trees very fast.
In closing, I just want to thank Sulphur Springs News Telegram and KSST for sharing my news with everyone. For me to have some news, please remember to call me at 903.612.8806; email me at [email protected]; or drop by to visit us at CR 1119 the house with all of the outbuildings. I look forward to hearing from you.

The 12th Annual Walk to Remember
The 12th annual Walk to Remember benefiting Terrific Tuesdays was deemed a success! The campaign exceeded it’s goal of $10,000 to fund Terrific Tuesdays for 2016 as the grand total topped out at $10,125.00 during the Walk as the final donations rolled in.
Ashley Crump, former caregiver for her mother-in-law Janie Crump, gave a testimony to the good that Terrific Tuesdays did for herself and their entire family during Janie’s final year. Several dozen persons walked the track and enjoyed the music during the outdoor event at the Gardens at Memorial Hospital, including Terrific Tuesday members, their families, caregivers and volunteers. Director Joyce McDonald and Senior Citizen Director Karon Weatherman were pleased with the turnout and the donations. The commemorative quilt went to Mary Grant, and purple flowers were given to Terrific Tuesday members in attendance. Anyone who wishes to support the program is welcome to make a donation at any time of the year by contacting Joyce McDonald at 903-243-5620.Terrific Tuesdays is a respite care program for caregivers of dementia patients, and is held weekly at the Sulphur Springs First United Methodist Church.
