PJC Names Leader of Promise Scholar
Paris Junior College student Cameron Copeland has been selected to receive a $1,000 scholarship from Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society as a 2015 Coca-Cola Leaders of Promise Scholar.
“PJC is honored to have our second student in as many years selected as a Leaders of Promise Scholar,” said PJC President Dr. Pamela Anglin. “The academic programs offered at PJC attract some very talented students with huge potential. Cameron is very deserving of this honor and we are proud to have him as a PJC Dragon.”
Copeland, a science major and Dragon baseball player, was among 207 Phi Theta Kappa members awarded a total of $207,000 in scholarships. Chosen from more than 1,100 applications worldwide, the scholars’ applications are evaluated by independent judges based on scholastic achievement, community service and leadership potential.
“The funds provided by the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation not only aid college completion, but provide students with the opportunity to engage in Society programs and develop leadership skills to become future leaders in their communities,” said Dr. Nancy Rieves, CEO of the Phi Theta Kappa Foundation.
“It’s an honor because there’s so few picked in the nation,” said Copeland of his selection. He still plans to attend Texas A&M University – College Station and then medical school.
When asked if his family was excited, Copeland said they were, but thinks his mother was more excited about his recent selection as PJC Homecoming King.
“That was fun for her, she got to take pictures and see all of it,” said Copeland.
He is also looking forward to the spring baseball season, his last at PJC, because “the team gets together and gets along really well, we bond better and play better, this year.”

Strong Arm Robbery at VFW Post Similar to Last Year’s VFW Robbery
Two men robbed the VFW Post #8560 in Sulphur Springs shortly before 9:30 a.m. Friday morning. Police Detective Sgt. Bo Fox said two males wearing hoodies entered the VFW and strong arm forced a female into a freezer area before taking two bags of money and leaving the scene.
Fox stated they are studying the video and have searched the area but nothing has been found late Friday morning. The incident happening during daylight hours causes investigators believe someone driving along the south service road or Veteran’s Drive might have seen something. Fox asks anyone who might have seen anything in the area to contact Crime Stoppers or the local police department.
Fox said the two men differ in height with one tall and one short, one wearing a grey hoodie with blue shorts and the other red sweatpants with a light colored hoodie.
Almost one year ago a similar robbery occurred at the VFW Post. Fox said there are similarities but it is too early to tell if they are otherwise related in any manner. The previous robbery was within two days of being one year according to Fox.
Sign Variance Considered For Possible Local Starbucks
Sulphur Springs Zoning Board of Adjustments and Appeals will consider a variance to the city sign ordinance for property located at 1320 South Broadway. The request is being made to increase the height and size of a proposed sign. The sign ordinance states that the sign at this location can only be 24 feet tall. The request seeks an 85 feet sign. The hardship noted is a lack of visibility from the interstate. Starbucks could come to Sulphur Springs if the variance is approved.
N3 Realty in Southlake has requested the variance. The location of the sign and Starbucks would be the lot next to Chili’s on South Broadway. City Staff recommends approval for the variance on two conditions. The first condition is that the site be platted. It is not a currently approved lot. The second condition is that a building permit be issued prior to permitting the sign.
Nine letters were sent to property owners within 200 feet of the property and no responses either in favor of or in opposition to have been received. The Zoning Board of Adjustments and Appeals will meet Tuesday, December 15th at 5:30 p.m. at City Hall.
