Open Carry Policies For Businesses in Sulphur Springs
After new laws regarding open carry went into effect at the beginning of the year, a number of businesses in Sulphur Springs have adopted new policies regarding open carry.
Business such as EZ Mart will allow open carry so long as the weapon remains holstered. Tractor Supply has no policies regarding open carry, but has no issue with open carry. Super Handy Convenience Stores has refused to release a statement on open carry at this time. Joe Bob’s Convenience Stores is still determining their policy for all of their stores.
Restaurants serving alcohol, such as Muddy Jakes and Lou Viney’s will not allow any weaponry inside the building and will have signs posted at the entrances.
Fix & Feed will not allow any weapons in the store and will have signs posted at the front entrance.
First Baptist Church and First United Methodist Church are currently undecided on open carry and will soon discuss the issue within their separate churches.
Wal-Mart Corporate offices sent a letter to their Texas store managers at super centers selling alcohol, such as the super center in Sulphur Springs, stating that greeters are required to approach customers and ask to see their concealed handgun license as the management deems appropriate.

Wildcats Powerlifters Begin Season
The Wildcats new powerlifting coach is Jacob Alford. Coach Alford was a powerlifter in high school at Lindale and was a state qualifier his senior year. He says things have been going great since team members began to lift right after the end of the football season. He’s noticed they’ve gotten a lot stronger.
Coach Alford says he’s had a lot of lifters participate and he’ll be able to choose between 18 and 20 to take to meets. He plans to take 11 lifters to Lindale for the Wildcats first meet of the season. Coach Alford says he has a mostly young team with several veteran lifters mixed in. He’ll have junior Taylor Ibarra back. Ibarra just missed making weight for last year’s regional meet in the 132 pound class. Coach Alford also has sophomore Dustin Crabtree back. He qualified for the regional meet in the 123 pound class. Coach Alford says he is anxious but excited to get the season underway Saturday.
PJC Biomedical Students Tour MD Anderson Cancer Center

Touring the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston were Paris Junior College students (from left) Marin Ivers, Kimberly Cox, Cameron Copeland, Cheyenne King, Wesley Giddens, and Michael Edenhoffer.
Six students in the biomedical and laboratory sciences program at Paris Junior College recently traveled to Houston to visit the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center.
Accompanying PJC Science Division Chair Jack Brown on the trip were Marin Ivers, Kimberly Cox, Cameron Copeland, Cheyenne King, Wesley Giddens, and Michael Edenhoffer. They were among some 425 students on the tour who are interested in transferring into the MD Anderson programs.
“Each program takes only 15-30 students and PJC is still the only college that they guarantee entry for those PJC students successfully completing here,” said Brown.
During the tour students heard from the department chairs speak about their programs, what they were looking for in students, success rates, pay, job outlook and more. According to Brown, the talk was held in the AT&T Auditorium on the second floor of the hospital and so many students attended there was an overflow lecture room.
Students then broke into smaller sessions specific to the program they were interested in to get more details from the department heads and to ask questions.
During the tours each lab director explained how the lab worked, what students would learn, and how what they learn was used in the real world of medicine and beyond.
“The students were all very impressed with the university, professors, and labs – which are very advanced,” said Brown. “They like the fact that class size was just 15-30 students, depending on the program.”

A New Year has begun! I hope everyone enjoyed their Christmas Holiday and New Year’s Celebration. We had a great time with family and enjoyed a quiet New Year’s. I hate to admit it but we did not make it to see the big ball drop. Should I just say, we are not nightowls.
We had another major rain event on the 26th and 27th. I have never seen so much water in our pasture. The water was over our driveway. No damage thank goodness. We want to pray for the people who lost so much during the tornadoes.
