Lady Cats, Wildcats Begin Week Against Hallsville

When building his program at Sulphur Springs, Lady Cats Basketball Coach Jeff Chapman started by teaching defense. Later he turned his attention to offense. Coach Chapman said his team spends about an hour and a half working on defense at every practice. The rest of the district is beginning to notice. A Marshall team undefeated in district and with a record better than .500 managed only 13 points against the Lady Cats. Texas High was held to 37 and Longview to 41. Friday night Greenville’s Lady Lions had only 20. In Friday’s game, the Lady Cats took the Lady Lions out of their offense with 22 steals and 35 deflections. Coach Chapman said deflections lead to steals which lead to baskets. He was also pleased that all nine players on the team scored. The Lady Cats, 4-1 in district play, are tied for first place with Hallsville and Longview. The Lady Cats host Hallsville in Wildcats Gym Tuesday night at 7 p.m.
Wildcats Assistant Basketball Coach Philip Manning wondered if the Wildcats might have a tough time of it Friday night at Greenville. While talking with Lions Coach Marcus Smith before the game, he learned that the Lions were coming off an emotional high. Tuesday night the Lions defeated a strong Longview team by five points at home after trailing by 15 points at the half. Smith also said the Lions’ practices the next two days were their best of the year. Still Coach Manning said the Wildcats outscored the Lions after one quarter 20-16 and led at the half 35-30. He said the Wildcats took a big lead during the third quarter and then held on as the Lions made a strong fourth quarter run. The Wildcats took at 72-65 win. The win gave the Wildcats a 1-2 district record that puts them in a tie for fourth place. They’ll face Hallsville Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m. The Bobcats, also 1-2, are also coming off an emotional high as they defeated Mt. Pleasant at the buzzer on the road Friday night. Coach Manning said Hallsville is a tough place to play.

ZBA Considers Starbucks Sign
Tuesday, the Sulphur Springs Zoning Board of Adjustments and Appeals will meet Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. in the council chambers at City Hall. The board will discuss and take action on a variance for signage at 1320 South Broadway and at 1111 West Industrial Drive. The two items are hold overs from the December meeting that didn’t happen due to lack of a quorum. Last week, during the January City Council meeting, the council appointed a new member and two alternates to the board to assist in having a quorum for meetings.
The property owners at 1320 South Broadway, N3 Realty in Southlake, are seeking a variance to the city sign ordinance. They are wanting a sign 85 ft high. The city sign ordinance allows signs to be only 24 feet high. City staff is in favor of the variance.
The ZBA board does not just provide recommendations to the city council but actually has the power to make decisions.

Taylor Begins Stint as PJC Basketball Coach

Coach Robert “Bobby” Taylor and wife Janell
Robert “Bobby” Taylor is started as Paris Junior College’s men’s basketball coach on Jan. 8, replacing Coach Bilal Batley.
Taylor comes to PJC after having served as assistant coach of the men’s basketball team at Texas A&M University – Commerce since 2011.
“Coach Batley stepped down as head men’s basketball coach on Jan. 7 for personal reasons. We respect and support his decision,” said PJC President Dr. Pam Anglin. “We were very fortunate to be able to bring Coach Bobby Taylor in as the head coach. Coach Taylor was able to make arrangements at Texas A&M University – Commerce to take over the PJC team on Thursday. We welcome Coach Taylor and his wife Janell back to PJC.”
Taylor served as assistant coach of the PJC men’s basketball team in 1996-98, working under former coach Bill Foy. While at PJC, he recruited and coached DeJuan Brown, who was named the 2001 NAIA National Player of the Year.
“I feel very excited; I feel like I’m coming home,” said Taylor. “It’s been 20 years and I’m seeing a lot of the same faces. I’m really blessed to have this opportunity to lead Dragon basketball. At TAMU-C we’ve had a long line of PJC players – even before my time there, I know from when I was an assistant at PJC there’s always been that pipeline. So I have familiarity with the program and former head coach Chuck Taylor is a friend of mine. The ‘marriage’ between PJC and TAMU-C is natural and those guys come in academically as well as athletically prepared.”
At TAMU-C Taylor helped lead the Lions to a 24-8 overall record during the 2014-15 season, as well as winning the 2014-15 LSC Tournament Championship and appearing in the NCAA Tournament. In the last two seasons the Lions had a 43-17 overall record.
Taylor developed two players currently affiliated with the NBA: Devondrick Walker with the San Antonio Spurs and Darrell Williams with the Chicago Bulls. Williams was the 2015 LSC Player of the Year, LSC Newcomer of the Year, First Team All-LSC, NCAA South Central Region Player of the Year, NCAA First Team All-South Central Region, NCAA First Team All-American and TABC Small College Player of the Year.
