A Hopkins County man is in the county jail charged with Aggravated Assault of a Peace Officer following a standoff in which he fired a pistol several times at Sheriff’s deputies and the SWAT Team. Jerry Walton Crawford, 62, had barricaded himself in his residence on CR 1174. When Crawford exited his house due to tear gas, he had in hand his weapon. He was taken to Memorial Hospital ICU Thursday night and released Sunday afternoon when he was booked into Hopkins County Jail. His bond has been set at $75,000.

The standoff took place Thursday When Crawford shot at police officers, one bullet penetrated the windshield of a patrol car. A second bent the radio antenna on the vehicle. Deputy Koby Hume borrowed a piece of duct tape from the fire department first responders at the scene and was back at work for the remainder of his shift. Responding officers requested assistance from the SWAT Team, made up of Hopkins County, Sulphur Springs, and DPS officers. “Restraint…” was the key to this situation stated Hopkins County Chief Criminal Investigator Lewis Tatum. Tatum said the seasoned officers showed a great deal of restraint in dealing with the issues surrounding this incident.

At a scrimmage Monday at White Oak, the Lady Cats Softball Team lost a close one to White Oak, 2-1 and then edged by Gilmer, 3-2. Lady Cats Coach David Carrillo said both opponents featured strong pitchers. The White Oak pitcher has committed to Stephen F. Austin. Coach Carrillo said a one hour time limit for the scrimmage games meant batters had only one or two at bats, hardly enough to get in a good groove.

Coach Carrillo was also impressed with his pitchers including Sarah Womack, Brinklee Driver and Landri Bell. Driver also blasted a two run homer against Gilmer. Coach Carrillo said his team this year features a good blend of returners and new young talent. He said competition for jobs would be fierce. Coach Carrillo said he had 36 players in the program and all 36 were good ballplayers.

Coach Carrillo said the evaluation process would continue Saturday as the Lady Cats scrimmage Rockwall, The Colony and North Forney at Rockwall. He expected to see more good pitching at this second scrimmage.

This is a unique year for Wildcats Baseball Coach Jerrod Hammack and his Wildcats Baseball Team. For ten previous years, Coach Hammack has fielded senior laden teams with just a few underclassmen on the roster. After last year’s graduation of the largest baseball senior class ever, the Wildcats will return only one starter, ace pitcher Tyler Follis. Coach Hammack says he will be starting from scratch.

Hammack says he’s looking at four or five sophomores along with members of a large and impressive freshman class. Three or four players will come from the basketball team when they are through. Scrimmages and early games will be big for player evaluations. The process begins Monday as the Wildcats scrimmage Sherman on the road beginning at 6:30 p.m. Coach Hammack says this will be a good year for young guys to be on the varsity. He adds the future may be now.
