Friday Open Date; Tuesday Possible Rain Out for Wildcat Baseball

Wildcats Baseball Coach Jerrod Hammack is no fan of byes in the schedule. It’s a necessity in District 16-6A, a seven team district. The Wildcats had their first open date Friday (March 23).

To keep his team in a semblance of a routine, Coach Hammack scheduled a non-district game on Saturday (March 24) at Seagoville. Before the game, Coach Hammack said he was worried the Wildcats might lack intensity in a non-district game in the middle of the district schedule. After the game, Coach Hammack said the Wildcats proved they could handle self-motivation. The Wildcats jumped on Seagoville for nine first inning runs in a 23-4 victory. Coach Hammack said the Wildcats got hits throughout their line up. 16 hits in all. He liked the way the Wildcats’ batters timed the Seagoville pitchers. Coach Hammack said the team has been working on that. He said Triston McCormick threw well over four innings. Coach Hammack said Tyler Armstrong was sharp on the mound in a scoreless fifth inning. Coach Hammack said the only negatives were two Wildcats’ errors. He said the team needs to eliminate those errors.

The Wildcats resume district play at Mount Pleasant Tuesday at 7 p.m. Rain is forecast and a flash flood watch is in effect Tuesday night. The Wildcats come into that game 3-0 in district play and 10-7 for the season.

Hopkins County Grand Jury Hands Up 83 Indictments

A Hopkins County Grand Jury handed up 83 indictments late last week. A majority of the indictments were for Possession of a Controlled Substance. However, there were a number of other charges resulting in the indictments. Those arrested prior to indictment include:

Ricky Lynn Hunt was indicted for two counts of Aggravated Sexual Assault of a Child.

Alejandro Castro Rodriguez was indicted for Smuggling of Persons. A grey Honda van with 10 passengers was stopped by a Hopkins County Deputy last December at the 132-mile marker on I-30. The driver of the van had only a Mexican ID but claimed to have a driver’s license from Alabama and Mexico. A records check revealed the statement false. Rodriguez was placed under arrest for no valid driver’s license. However, the other nine Hispanic males in the vehicle said they had paid individuals to illegally bring them into the United States from Mexico and were now being taken to another location to work so they could pay their debt to the “coyotes”. Rodriguez, 26, of Mexico, stated he was taking the nine persons from Dallas to Mississippi in order to work. Due to his statements and the statements of the passengers, the deputy determined that Rodriguez had encouraged them to enter or remain in this country in violation of federal law by concealing, harboring, or shielding them from detection.

Sherrie Lee Cooksey was indicted for Burglary of a Habitation. A call to Sulphur Springs Police alerted them to a burglary of a residence on Bellview Street. Local police found Cooksey, 40, of Sulphur Springs, hiding in a bathroom at the residence. The complainant stated she observed Cooksey inside a vehicle at the residence when she arrived. She believed Cooksey was attempting to steal the vehicle. Since the complainant was not the owner of the residence, the officer contacted the owner who gave permission to enter the residence.

Amario Felician Zamora was indicted for Burglary of a Habitation.

Bryanna Elizabeth Timms was indicted for Hinder Apprehension or Prosecution Known Felon.

Two individuals arrested in Hopkins County Wednesday were wanted on warrants after Henderson County authorities responded to a home in the Mabank area February 5th in response to a 21-month-old who shot itself in the face. The child was flown to a Dallas hospital to be treated for injuries. Henderson County CPS has taken custody of a girl and two boys who were living at the residence. Hopkins County Deputies were advised a man wanted in Henderson County on felony warrants for Abandon Child Criminal Neglect and for Make Firearm Accessible to a Child was in Sulphur Springs. Henderson County law enforcement told the local deputies that a woman would be with him. Deputies located the woman, Bryanna Elizabeth Timms, 34, of Mabank, at the Best Western Hotel. She and David Setharia Whittick, 33, of Mabank were both wanted on warrants for the above charges. When the deputies found Timms, she told the deputies she did not know where Whittick could be located. As the deputy drove her to jail, her phone GPS was sounding a tone and providing a location. The deputy took a side trip to the location. He drove back to the Best Western. Timms told the deputy that her mom had made her reservation and she did not think Whittick was at the hotel. He was, along with his dog. Timms was also charged with Hindering Apprehension of a Known Felony, a Felony 3.

Juan Torres was indicted for Money Laundering more than $2,500 but less than $30,000.

Carl Featherston was indicted for Unlawful Possession of a Firearm.

John David Sheffield was indicted for Unauthorized Use of Vehicle.Sulphur Springs Police officers were dispatched to 309 Helm Lane where Sheffield, 21, of Sulphur Springs was said to be asking subjects for drugs. Sheffield was driving a 2015 Toyota Forerunner that he had stolen earlier in the day. Police made contact with Sheffield in the parking lot of the apartment complex. During their investigation, one of the police officers had observed Sheffield driving the vehicle away from a location. The officer contacted the vehicle owner and found that the vehicle had been stolen.

Peyton Ray McAllister was indicted for Accident Involving Injury.

Monica Renee Millan was indicted for Forgery Financial Instrument.

Brian Lynn Matthews was indicted for Attempt to Take Weapon From an Officer.

Swilling, Martin, Stephens

Ashlee Michele Swilling was indicted for Engage in Organized Criminal Activity. Following a month long investigation, Hopkins County Sheriff’s Investigator Dennis Findley and deputies have arrested three individuals for burglary of a building in Miller Grove, theft at LaPooch Pet Resort, burglary of a habitation, and thefts in Rains County and Bowie County. A warrant for the arrest of Swilling, 29, of Cumby, Nathan Allen Martin, 30, of Conway, Arkansas, and Robert Stephens, 39, led deputies to observe a green 2017 Jeep Renegade pulling into Subway in Sulphur Springs. Investigator Wade Sheets was called to the scene and arrested Swilling and Martin. Property taken in the robbery at LaPooch, valued at over $600 has been recovered. Most of the $1500 in property taken from the Miller Grove storage buildings has been recovered, according to Findley.
