March Republican Meeting Hosts Run-off, City Council Candidates

Monday night at the Hopkins County Regional Civic Center the county Republican Party hosted candidates for the May Run-off Elections for County Treasurer and for County Commissioner Precinct 2. Prior to statements made by each candidate and a question and answer session, non-partisan candidates for Sulphur Springs City Council spoke to the gathering for three to five minutes each in a “get acquainted” time. City Council candidates did not field questions from the members of the audience. They await a Chamber of Commerce sponsored debate in April.

Not only local candidates but also Texas House District 2 Incumbent Dan Flynn was present for the evening. Flynn thanked those present for their support during his most recent election. He will face Democrat Bill Brannon in the November General Election.

County Treasurer candidates Andrea Griggs and Danny Davis addressed the crowd individually and then fielded questions. Both candidates pointed to their specific abilities and contributions that would enable them to serve the county.

No questions were asked of Commissioner Precinct 2 candidates Edward “Ed” Moore and Gregg Anglin. Both men presented short statements concerning the need for road improvement and their desire to serve the precinct by making significant changes in road conditions.

Lady Cats 6-0 in District After 5-1 Win At Mt Pleasant

The Lady Cats’ softball team wrapped up the first half of district play with a perfect 6-0 matk after a 5-1 win at Mount Pleasant Monday night.

Lady Cats pitcher Bailey Haggerty threw a masterful three hitter and allowed only an unearned run over seven innings. She ended the game by retiring twelve straight Lady Tigers’ hitters after a lead off single in the fourth inning. The Lady Cats gave Haggerty all the runs she would need as they scored four times in the top of the first inning.

Alyssa Abron open the game with a walk and Kelsey Wallace followed with a two-run home run. After that, Brinklee Driver walked. Sadie Stroud hit a sharp single that went right through the second baseman’s legs. Runners moved to third and and second on a sacrifice bunt by Sierra Smith. Kate Womack walked to load the bases. After a Lady Tigers’ pitching change, Macee Hollins drew a walk that drove in a run. Alli Fite grounded a ball to third. The throw home for a attempted force out was low and was dropped allowing Stroud to score.

Mount Pleasant trimmed the lead to 4-1 with an unearned run in the bottom of the third. They used a walk and the single coupled with an errant throw to score the run. Haggerty got out of the inning leaving a runner at third. The Lady Cats scored an insurance run in the top of the fifth. Kate Womack singled and then scored when a Fite single was misplayed in the outfield.

The Lady Cats outhit the Lady Tigers, 7 to 3. Wallace and Stoud had two hits. Abron, Womack and Fite had one hit apiece.

At the midpoint in the district race, the Lady Cats are 6-0. They have a two game lead over Mount Pleasant, Hallsville and Texas High who are all 4-2. Marshall is at 2-4, Greenville is 1-5 and Pine Tree is 0-6. The Lady Cats are 19-4 for the season.

The Lady Cats open the second half of district play with a game at Greenville Thursday at 6 p.m.

Friday Open Date; Tuesday Possible Rain Out for Wildcat Baseball

Friday Open Date; Tuesday Possible Rain Out for Wildcat Baseball

Wildcats Baseball Coach Jerrod Hammack is no fan of byes in the schedule. It’s a necessity in District 16-6A, a seven team district. The Wildcats had their first open date Friday (March 23).

To keep his team in a semblance of a routine, Coach Hammack scheduled a non-district game on Saturday (March 24) at Seagoville. Before the game, Coach Hammack said he was worried the Wildcats might lack intensity in a non-district game in the middle of the district schedule. After the game, Coach Hammack said the Wildcats proved they could handle self-motivation. The Wildcats jumped on Seagoville for nine first inning runs in a 23-4 victory. Coach Hammack said the Wildcats got hits throughout their line up. 16 hits in all. He liked the way the Wildcats’ batters timed the Seagoville pitchers. Coach Hammack said the team has been working on that. He said Triston McCormick threw well over four innings. Coach Hammack said Tyler Armstrong was sharp on the mound in a scoreless fifth inning. Coach Hammack said the only negatives were two Wildcats’ errors. He said the team needs to eliminate those errors.

The Wildcats resume district play at Mount Pleasant Tuesday at 7 p.m. Rain is forecast and a flash flood watch is in effect Tuesday night. The Wildcats come into that game 3-0 in district play and 10-7 for the season.
