Photos From Shadow Renaissance Festival’s “Family and Friends Day”

The first day of Shadow Renaissance Festival was  “Family and Friends Day” and vendors were still setting up during the early afternoon. Retail traders included Danna Bain and her Buffalo Girls Flea Market and Swap, Bruce Garner “The Leather Man” and Steve Plumlee’s “Cobwebs and Cubbyholes”. Performers setting up included Master Ash Cary of ‘Knightwings Birds of Prey’, a Fortune Teller, and The Great Rondini, Escape Artist. Here are some photos of the many attractions before the crowds arrived at the first-ever Renaissance Festival in Sulphur Springs, Texas, a sponsorship of Shadow Ranch Therapeutic Riding Center.

Musicians and Magicians are part of the weekend’s outdoor entertainment

Leather artist Bruce Garner and apprentice Joe Warren will be personalizing leather goods for customers during the Festival

Bernie Thesing and Allison Libby-Thesing of The Oaks Bed and Breakfast are preparing foods to delight everyone from fair maidens to ogres.

Danna and the Buffalo Gals’ triple-size camp has a gypsy flair, with old and new treasures …  from riding saddles to magic mirrors, and from quilts to cowhides, fur and leather creations.  Following the Shadow Renaissance Fair, follow Danna and the Buffalo Girls to the Flea Market and Swap in Winnsboro, Texas October 11, 12 and 13 and back in Sulphur Springs in April 2019.

Dancers and acrobats will perform on the outdoor stage during the Festival weekend

The Great Rondini shared an entertaining story about his recent parachuting escape with KSST’s James Terry, before the Festival opened.

A female Barn Owl (screech owl) and an American Kestral, one of the smallest falcons in North America, are among the members of the KnightWings Birds of Prey attraction located on the Civic Center grounds. Their handler is Master Ash Cary, who is a member of a Raptor demonstration group as well as a wildlife conservation group.

Gail Hamlin, a fortune teller for over twenty years, will open a fortune telling tent for Palmistry (palm readings) and Cartomancy (reading of Tarot cards)  during the Festival. She and her husband Glenn reside at Dike, Texas

There’s something for everyone, including Jousting, for visitors at the first-ever Shadow Renaissance Festival in Sulphur Springs, Texas on July 28 and 29, 2019

Update: Police Report Elderly Couple from Greenville Found

The Lubbock Police Department reported the missing elderly couple was found safe. Foye and June Davis are now safe at home.

The original story:

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) –

Lubbock Police, working with Greenville Police and DPS, are currently searching for an elderly couple who have been missing since Thursday morning.

Foye and June Davis of Greenville, Texas, were last seen in Lubbock Thursday morning around 7:30 a.m. before checking out of their hotel room in the 3200 block of the South Loop.

The couple was in town visiting a family member in the hospital. They have not been seen or heard from since checking out of their hotel.

The two were last seen in a red GMC Terrain, with Texas tags/license plate: DX3M651.

Police are concerned because since arriving in Lubbock on Monday, July 23, they were found lost on the Texas Tech campus.

The individual who found them helped them to check into the Pioneer Hotel in downtown Lubbock. After checking in to the hotel, they were then given directions by a hotel employee to Covenant Hospital to visit a family member. After leaving Covenant around 4 p.m., the two then checked into Hotel Ava, located in the 3200 block of the South Loop, leaving behind their property, including their medication, at the Pioneer Hotel.

Police are asking for the public’s assistance in locating Foye and June Davis. If any member of the public sees them, we ask that they immediately call 911, or contact their local law enforcement agency.

Police provided these descriptions on Thursday night:

Franklin County Sheriff Appointed to Sheriffs’ Association of Texas Board of Directors

Franklin County Sheriff Ricky Jones was appointed to the Board of Directors of the Sheriffs’ Association of Texas at their 140th Annual Training Conference held in Grapevine, July 21-24, 2018, according to a recent press release from his office. More than 1,500 participants were in attendance at the Gaylord Texas Resort and Convention Center for opportunities for training sessions and to view 240 exhibits showcasing the latest technology in law enforcement.

Sheriff Jones has been Sheriff of Franklin county since January, 2013. The Sheriffs’ Association of Texas is one of the oldest law enforcement associations in the nation. The Sheriffs of Texas met for the first time on August 14, 1874, in the Navarro County Courthouse in Corsicana. Sul Ross, Sheriff of McLennon County was the first to call the meeting to order.

The Sheriffs of Texas began annual training conferences in 1878. Those conferences are the largest composite gathering of law enforcement officers in Texas. Sheriffs and other county and local law enforcement officers, federal and state officers, and major industry security personnel attend. The Sheriff’s Association of Texas serves as a liaison with federal, state, county, and municipal agencies and associations to promote cooperation, training, education, and more efficient services to the citizens of Texas.

Elliott Leaves Legacy of Community Service

A legacy of community service remains following the death of William S. “Billy Sam” Elliott, 75, of Sulphur Springs. Elliott passed away on Thursday, July 26, 2018 at his residence.

Elliott served as president of the Sulphur Springs Independent School District Board of Trustees and president of the Hopkins County Dairy Festival.  He is best remembered by many for his service as President and CEO of the Hopkins County Chamber of Commerce where he served for 15 years. During his years with the chamber, he led in establishing the Adult Leadership and High School Leadership Classes. Both the Adult and High School classes were formed each year and presented insight into the activity of the community. Local city and county government, poverty initiatives,  ethics, civic organizations, and a number of other subjects were the focus of the classes. Approximately 30 high school students from around the county and city gained valuable information that enabled them to become future leaders locally and in other communities where they have chosen to live. Adults gained insight that has led to a number of improvements to the local city and county.

Elliott was also involved in bringing the PJC Tech Center, now PJC-Sulphur Springs to the city.

His personal interest in each one he became acquainted with was evident in a comment on social media by a high school leadership alumnus, “I loved him! He was so so kind and did a wonderful job leading and starting our leadership class at SSHS. He always remembered your name and asked how things were. ”

A former teacher wrote, “Billy Sam was such a kind man. He might’ve been on an urgent mission, but he always had time to stop and chat. He had that special gift of making others feel important…. Billy Sam wanted and worked for the best for SS. and he never minded working behind the scenes… He was a true gentleman.”

Elliott served as a member of the Sulphur Springs Fire Department and Rescue Unit, Assistant Cub Scout Master of Pack 69, president of SSHS Wildcat Band Boosters, chairman of the Hopkins County Heritage and Museum Association, member of Hopkins County Civic Center Board, member of the ARK-LA-TEX council of Governments. In 1983 Billy Sam was honored as Hopkins County Citizen of the Year.

Elliott was a lifetime member of First United Methodist Church where as a youth he obtained the Boy Scout Rank of Life and as an adult served on the administrative board. He worked for Nordstrom Valve as a safety director for many years. He enjoyed traveling with Rickie and their sons. From San Francisco to Washington DC, from South Dakota to Big Bend National Park, from Yellowstone to the Great Smokey Mountains, the adventures he provided created a lifetime of memories, according to the family.

Born on June 4, 1943, in Sulphur Springs, the son of William S. “Bill” and Marguerite Gilbert Elliott, he married Rickie Carpenter on November 19, 1964, at Wesley Methodist Church in Greenville, TX. She survives.

In addition to his wife, he is also survived by sons, William S. “Trey” Elliott III of Paris, Richard Joel Elliott of North Lake, grandson, William S. “Will” Elliott, IV of Paris, and sisters, Sherry Elliott Baxter and husband Max of Sulphur Springs, and Annada Elliott Jones and husband James of Sulphur Springs.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services for William S. “Billy Sam” Elliott, age 75, of Sulphur Springs, will be held at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, July 29, 2018, at West Oaks Funeral Home with Bro. Charles Moore officiating. Interment will follow at Mt. Zion Cemetery with Mike Blount, Ronnie Branscome, Mike Broyles, Bob Carpenter, Jim Gilbert, John Icenhower, Charles Snell, and Key Walker serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Max (Poss) Baxter and James Jones. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Saturday, July 28, 2018 at West Oaks Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to Mt. Zion Cemetery Association, 16256 TX Hwy 11 W, Cumby, TX 75433. Arrangements are under the direction of West Oaks Funeral Home.
