Traffic Stop Results In Location Of Methamphetamine, Felony Arrest

A traffic stop on FM 71 east just before noon Thursday resulted in location of suspected methamphetamine and one felony arrest, according to sheriff’s reports.
Hopkins County Sheriff’s Sgt. Michael Russell arrested Nikki A. Harris, 49, of Talco on a possession of 1 gram or more but less than 4 grams of a Penalty Group 1 controlled substance charge, according to arrest reports.
Russell reported stopping a Ford Taurus for a traffic violation at 11:03 a.m. on FM 71 east at County Road 3561. He said the woman, identified in arrest reports as Harris, showed signs of nervousness while they were talking, thus, he asked for permission to search her car.
The sheriff’s officer then reportedly called for a police canine unit to respond. The dog conducted a search around the car, giving a positive alert for contraband. Using that a probable cause, the car was searched.
Russell reported finding four plastic bags inside of a glasses case. Three of the bags allegedly contained suspected methamphetamine, resulting in the woman being taken into custody and the substance seized as evidence. The suspected meth weighed 1.58 grams, the sheriff’s officer alleged in arrest reports.
Harris remained in the county jail Friday morning. Bond was set at $10,000 on the charge.
CHRISTUS Mother Frances Hospital – Sulphur Springs Investing In Education, Training to Reduce Maternal Deaths
Sulphur Springs – CHRISTUS Mother Frances Hospital – Sulphur Springs joins more than 200 Texas hospitals to reduce pregnancy-related deaths and complications through the TexasAIM program. Hospitals statewide are coming together to reduce the number of deaths due to obstetric hemorrhage, one of the most common causes of death and injury in the days immediately after pregnancy.
The TexasAIM program seeks to reduce maternal deaths and complications from specific causes by arming hospitals and medical personnel with sets of practices and tools, called maternal safety bundles, that have been shown to make patients safer. The obstetric hemorrhage bundle will help hospitals standardize how they assess women for the risk of hemorrhage, monitor for excessive blood loss and respond in emergency situations.
“It is important that our caregivers are prepared to treat women who may be at risk or respond effectively when needed in an emergency situation,” said Sarah Mills, RN, director of perinatal services at CHRISTUS Mother Frances Hospital – Sulphur Springs. “Obstetric hemorrhage is one of the leading causes of maternal death in this country. By taking an active role in TexasAIM, we are ensuring that we have the practices, procedures and tools in place to provide lifesaving care for our patients.”
TexasAIM is sponsored by the Texas Department of State Health Services, the state’s public health agency, in collaboration with the Texas Hospital Association and the Alliance for Innovation in Maternal Health. Participation in this program is another example of CHRISTUS Mother Frances Hospital – Sulphur Springs taking an active role in improving the health of the community.
“Too many women and families are affected by pregnancy complications,” explained DSHS Commissioner Dr. John Hellerstedt. “We know most pregnancy-related deaths are preventable, and this kind of collaboration between health care providers and public health gives us the best opportunity to save mothers’ lives.”
In the next phases of TexasAIM, CHRISTUS Mother Frances Hospital – Sulphur Springs and other participating hospitals will implement bundles on caring for women with opioid use disorder and treating severe high blood pressure during pregnancy, two other significant causes of maternal death in Texas.
“CHRISTUS Mother Frances Hospital – Sulphur Springs is dedicated to providing our patients with the very highest levels of maternal care,” said Martin W. Fielder, MD, FACOG, Chief Medical Officer, CHRISTUS Mother Frances Hospital – Sulphur Springs. “By taking part in TexasAIM we demonstrate our commitment to serving this community by giving our providers, nurses and Associates the resources and training to better serve the patients who rely on us.”

Dr. James ‘Darryl’ Doughtie, OB/GYN, Still Serving the Community After 23 Years

During the KSST Good Morning Show, Dr. Doughtie remarked that now, after 23 years of delivering babies, he is starting to see second-generation expectant moms coming to his clinic as patients. “Many young mothers who live in their home town will seek out the same doctor who delivered them. I am glad that we made our home and practices here, it’s a great community to belong to, and a real example of good small-town living”, remarked Dr. Doughtie. His family includes his wife, Dr. Laura Kosub, Family Practitioner, and their three college-age children, each of whom are also seeking medical careers, particularly in the field of physical therapy.
Dr. Doughtie observed that although childbearing itself hasn’t changed, the medical technology available in the OB/GYN field has experienced large advances in recent years. Even within the past five years, there now exist pre-natal diagnostic tests which are non-invasive and extremely helpful for pregnant women and their unborn babies. Examples he cited are much-improved diagnostic testing for “chromosome abnormalities” and in improvements in Ultrasound, another non-invasive tool for identification of problems in-utero.
Dr, Doughtie practices through CHRISTUS Mother Frances Hospital and at his offices in CHRISTUS Clinic along with Dr. Martin Fielder and Deb Logan, an in-hospital midwife. Dr. Doughtie and his wife are from the Ft. Worth area, where they both studied and took their residencies before coming to Sulphur Springs to serve as physicians.
Man Jailed After Allegedly Speeding In A Neighborhood, The Downtown Area
A 33-year-old Sulphur Springs man was jailed early Friday morning after allegedly recklessly speeding through a residential area and downtown until the truck he was driving “lost a wheel.” The passenger, a 35-year-old Sulphur Springs man, was also arrested.
Police reported seeing two men leaving a Georgia Street location, where a disturbance was reported. A had man allegedly punched a resident in the face, damaged a door and was leaving in a pickup.
The officer reported seeing a pickup traveling at a high rate of speed on Georgia Street and attempted to catch up to the pickup, which the officer alleged to be traveling at a speed of more than 60 miles per hour on Davis Street.
The pickup driver reportedly ignored stop signs at multiple intersections, including those on Peach Street, Davis Street, Main Street, Gilmer Street, Connally Street, Church Street and Houston Street, while maintaining unsafe speeds on those roads. The pickup didn’t begin slowing until its front passenger side wheel came off and struck a road sign, then stopped on Houston Street at Church Street, the patrol officer alleged in arrest reports.
A Hopkins County sheriff’s deputy arrived to assist with the stop. The driver was arrested just before 1 a.m. Friday for reckless driving, a misdemeanor charge.
The passenger allegedly had glassy, bloodshot eyes, slurred speech, was unsteady on his feet when standing and walking. A strong odor of alcohol also reportedly emitted form him, resulting in the 35-year-old man’s arrest for public intoxication.

CHRISTUS is in the process of reaching out to Cigna customers who visited a CHRISTUS facility or physician while the system was out of network to discuss the process for paying and adjusting their bill. Patients with questions are welcome to call the number for their hospital listed online at christushealth.org/cigna.
Cigna customers can also call the company’s 24×7 customer service line at 1.800.244.6224 if they have questions or need assistance.
Cigna and CHRISTUS Health Friday announced the two entities have reached an agreement, which means CHRISTUS doctors, hospital and facilities will once again be in-network for Cigna customers.
The agreement picks up retroactively where each facility’s contract left off, which could be beneficial to Cigna customers who used a CHRISTUS facility in the time between the contract ended and agreement was reached. Claims billed as out-of-network during those dates that would have been in-network are being re-process at lower in-network rate, according to the press release.
