Cattle Theft Thwarted by Toney Hurley
Former Hopkins County Sheriff’s Chief Criminal Investigator Toney Hurley, now a Special Ranger with the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association, recently teamed up with another special ranger in the arrests of two Arkansas men for theft of 70 head of livestock and theft of ranch equipment in Texas and Arkansas. Two men accused in the murder of 66-year old Gary Maynard at his home were indicted by a Hopkins County Grand Jury on December 8. Both 31-year old Patrick Wayne McMahan of Sulphur Springs and 26-year old Cody Scott Shaw of Emory were indicted for capital murder. Tuesday a work crew began pouring concrete at the new Hopkins County Jail site. County Judge Robert Newsom said the pour was for a fire lane that is on the west side of the proposed new jail. After it was completed, work began on pouring the foundation in sections. Lots of underground plumbing and electrical work has been done to get ready for the foundation pours.
