Patrick McMahan Arraigned in Maynard Murder

Two men accused in the murder of 66-year old Gary Maynard at his home were indicted by a Hopkins County Grand Jury on December 8. Both 31-year old Patrick Wayne McMahan of Sulphur Springs and 26-year old Cody Scott Shaw of Emory were indicted for capital murder. Indications are District Attorney Will Ramsey intends to seek the death penalty in both cases. Both men were originally scheduled for arraignment before District Judge Eddie Northcutt Monday afternoon although KSST was told that Shaw would not be arraigned Monday.

Gary Maynard was shot to death at his home in his bed on November 29. Both Shaw and McMahan worked for Maynard’s tree service. Sheriff’s Office Chief Criminal Investigator Lewis Tatum said both men admitted they were involved in the murder after they were arrested. Items stolen from Maynard’s home were recovered. McMahan was arrested at his Sulphur Springs home and Shaw at his Emory home in Rains County. Both men remain jailed under $2-million bond set by JP Yvonne King.
