The Sulphur Springs Police Department is investigating the armed holdup of a gas station convenience store at Broadway at Shannon Road just after 4 Monday morning. The Blue Santa toy drive is underway. Sulphur Springs Police Chief Jay Sanders says they hope to help from 1500 to 1600 children, their biggest year ever. “Updated” Murder Suspect Found Dead
The body of a man wanted for murder in Franklin County was found in Hopkins County Tuesday morning. Authorities believe 55-year old Keith Lynn McDowell died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. His body and vehicle were found just before 8 a.m. on County Road 2381. Recently the local Crimestoppers group purchased a computer system for the Sulphur Springs Police Department to collect a database of info on local children in case any of them goes missing. The Sulphur Springs Police Department is looking for a person who drove into two houses and also hit two mail boxes in the 200 block of Helm Lane Saturday morning just after 1 a.m. The driver left the scene. It’s suspected that he was drunk. Damage to one house was estimated to be $5,000 while damage to the second was placed at $500.
Weather Alert Sirens Accidentally Sounding
For the second time this month, a city of Sulphur Springs weather alert siren accidentally went off. The latest incident occurred at around 4 a.m. Monday. In both cases, Police Chief Jay Sanders says there was a lot of lightning in the area. He believes lightning caused a power surge that triggered the alarms. Former Law Enforcement Officer Pleads Guilty
Former Sulphur Springs Policeman and former Hopkins County Sheriff’s Crime Prevention Officer Rex Morgan entered guilty pleas Monday to thefts from the Sheriff’s evidence room and was sentenced to 10-years probation and 180-days in the County Jail. 8th District Court Judge Eddie Northcutt also fined Morgan $2,000 for each offense. Hopkins County Sheriff’s deputies arrested a 43-year old Cooper man at Kid’s Kingdom in Buford Park in Sulphur Springs for allegedly setting up a sex date with what he thought was a 15-year old girl.
