City Council Wrap Up 10/07/14

At Tuesday night’s meeting of the Sulphur Springs City Council, the council approved an ordinance on first reading for issuance and sale of $5-million of certificates of obligation for more street work, equipment and renovation work for old City Hall. The council also passed several ordinances on second and final reading to help Saputo Dairy Foods receive financial incentives from the state for a plant expansion.

The Trail Dust Inn is now open…again. The Best Western hotel opened its newly remodeled doors on Monday, October 8 after the main building suffered major fire damage over a year ago. Nearly 13,000 Sulphur Springs ISD notices are already in the mail. Taxpayers have until January 31 to pay their tax bill without any penalty or interest. The school district tax rate went down 1-cent per $100 valuation. Property values increased 4.4% in the school district.

The New Jail is Moving Along Nicely

The work crew building the new Hopkins County Jail began putting in piers for the foundation Monday. A little bit of dirt work remains to be done elsewhere. A total of 103 piers will be put some 20 to 30 feet deep unto shale. Workers are hoping to have them all done by the end of the week. County Judge Robert Newsom says the project is 11 days behind schedule due to discoveries made during earthwork.
