A 23-year old Hallsville man traveled to Sulphur Springs Tuesday night expecting to meet up with a 15-year old girl for sexual activity only to be met by officers from the Sulphur Springs Police Department and Hopkins County Sheriff’s Department. Cattle Theft Thwarted by Toney Hurley
Former Hopkins County Sheriff’s Chief Criminal Investigator Toney Hurley, now a Special Ranger with the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association, recently teamed up with another special ranger in the arrests of two Arkansas men for theft of 70 head of livestock and theft of ranch equipment in Texas and Arkansas. Both men were arrested in Arkansas and then were taken to the Panola County Jail in Texas.

The District Attorney’s Office dedicated the Gary McLarry Witness Waiting Room during a Christmas open house Friday afternoon. McLarry was a Hopkins County Sheriff’s Deputy who passed away two months ago from kidney failure. DA Will Ramsey said McLarry brought joy to the righteous and terror to the evildoers. Distribution day for Empty Stocking, Angel Tree and Blue Santa toys will take place this Saturday at First United Methodist Church from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. Last minute toy donations can be delivered to any of the forty blue barrels around town or taken to the Sulphur Springs Police Department or Hopkins County Sheriff’s Office. Deadline for drop off is Friday at 5 p.m.

This coming Friday at 5pm is the last day to take your presents to the Hopkins County Sheriffs Department. Or if you wish you may deposit the gift in any blue barrel at there many participating Sulphur Springs locations.

Justice of the Peace Yvonne King set bond at $200,000 for 31-year old Mike Alvin Ruiz of Winnsboro, who has been charged with aggravated assault on a public servant. Former Law Enforcement Officer Pleads Guilty
Former Sulphur Springs Policeman and former Hopkins County Sheriff’s Crime Prevention Officer Rex Morgan entered guilty pleas Monday to thefts from the Sheriff’s evidence room and was sentenced to 10-years probation and 180-days in the County Jail. 8th District Court Judge Eddie Northcutt also fined Morgan $2,000 for each offense. Pills and a firearm were taken from the evidence room.
