Thank you Hopkins County for Making Stew Fest 2014 a HUGE Success!!! To host an event that gathers over 7000 people in one day, takes a TON of dedicated volunteers to make it happen. Travis Lee Owens, lifelong resident of Hopkins County passed away Saturday morning October 4th at Carriage House Manor nursing home in Sulphur Springs. Travis was born in Hopkins County on November 24th 1939. He was the son of O. B. and Janie Morgan Owens. He married Linda Wood Owens of Commerce on July 20, 1962 in Hopkins County. Possible Location Change For County Genealogical Society
Behind the scenes, the city of Sulphur Springs has been working to strike a deal where the Hopkins County Genealogical Society would move out of their prime Main Street building into the meeting room at the city Public Library. Some big changes appear to be coming to the State Highway 19 at I-30 intersection. TXDOT is proposing to restripe, put up signage and widen the intersection from one land in each direction to two. Budget Meeting Tuesday
City of Sulphur Springs Director of Finance Peter Karstens will distribute copies of a draft budget to City Council members at a workshop meeting Tuesday evening at 6 p.m. Karstens is expected to give a brief overview of the budget. John Sellers Shares The History Of The Old U.S. Post Office Building
Sulphur Springs City Councilman John Sellers told the history of the old U.S. Post Office Building on its’ 100th birthday Tuesday as it was rededicated as the new City Hall. The site once was a wagon shop and then a blacksmith shop. The land was purchased by the nearby First Christian Church, who then sold it to the feds in 1909. Update On Wastewater Treatment Plant
Sulphur Springs City Manager Marc Maxwell gave the City Council an update Tuesday night on the city’s stressed Wastewater Treatment Plant. He said a new filter was helping and added the plant was within allowable limits for total suspended solids last month. Maxwell said the plant was out of compliance for ammonia. S.S.P.D. Names New Patrol Captain and Interdiction Officer
When Sulphur Springs Police Chief Jim Bayuk moves to the Sulphur Springs ISD Police Department on August 1, it will have a domino effect. Patrol Captain Jay Sanders, appointed by the City Council, will become chief. Interdiction Officer Lt. Jason Ricketson will take over as Patrol Captain.
