Time Change Saturday Night at 2am

Spring Ahead, Fall back. it’s that time again folks. Do not forget to adjust your clocks Saturday night before you go to bed.

Daylight Saving Time (DST) kicks in this weekend, the annual bittersweet sign that spring is on its way, but it hurts your sleep schedule. At 2 a.m. local time on March 8, clocks will “spring forward” one hour.

The amount of daylight hours will grow longer as we head into spring but there is more to daylight saving than extra time spent outdoors and the sun setting later.

DST was first used by Germany during World War I as a way to conserve energy. The goal was to take advantage of the daylight hours in spring by moving an additional hour of daylight from the morning to the evening and not letting people sleep through the first few hours of sunshine.

America didn’t adopt a policy on DST until 1966, minus the states of Arizona and Hawaii.

So why not Arizona and Hawaii?

Arizona is one of the warmest locations in the summer. Increasing daylight hours would increase energy use from air conditioners and cooling systems. As for Hawaii, it is closer to the equator and does not see a large variation in daylight hours between winter and summer.

When your sleep-wake and light-dark cycles are out of sync, it can make you feel tired and downright grumpy. However, the longer daylight hours can be good for business. Retailers can benefit as it can cause customers to want to get out of their homes and shop and do outdoor activities.

If you’re not a fan of DST and the longer days ahead, you’ll have to wait until November 1. That’s when we “fall back” one hour.

“Updated” Daylight Home Burglaries Plagues Sulphur Springs.

Hopkins County Sheriff’s Chief Criminal Investigator Lewis Tatum is urging county residents to be the nosiest neighbor you can be to help the Sheriff’s Office arrest a group of thieves who have recently burglarized several homes in the south part of the county during the day. The thieves like to kick a door open, grab items and get out quick. Tatum is hoping someone will get a description or a license plate number of a strange car in an area. Tatum says he has learned from interviewing burglars that they avoid houses with alarm systems or with mean dogs. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Sheriff’s Office.

Winter Storm Watch Ends Early

weather sunny jw As quickly as it came, it is disappearing. The National Weather Service in Fort Worth has cancelled the winter storm warning AT 10:35 a.m.—an hour and 25 minutes prior to the original noon end time on Thursday.

Roadways are likely to remain icy or partially snow and slush covered for much of the day. However, sunny skies have already started to promote melting on many area roadways this morning.

Temperatures are still on track to climb above freezing after noon today and then remain above freezing through the early evening hours. Overnight lows are expected in the mid-20s so any residual snow or water on roadways is very likely to refreeze.

Temperatures Friday are expected to climb into the mid-40s with under sunny skies. Almost all of the snow and ice should melt off area roadways on Friday according to the National Weather Service.
