Lady Cats Softball JVs Hold Great Talent

There seems to be depth like never before for the Lady Cats’ softball program. The varsity, featuring only two seniors, is currently 29-6 and getting ready for a third round regional quarterfinal game this week. The Lady Cats program also featured two very talented JV teams this season.

The JV Blue Team won the district championship and was undefeated in district play. Their only loss of the season was to a ranked varsity team, New Diana, in a tournament.

The JV Gold just had a few losses and they too were undefeated in district play. Their coach, Chris Valdovinos, says the two JV teams have lots of good players.

Three JV players were promoted to the varsity after the JV season was finished. Included were pitcher Bailey Haggerty, who has won all three of the Lady Cats’ playoff games, and courtesy runners Macee Hollins and Mia Pharis. Coach Valdovinos says he was also impressed with JV players Kate Potts, Jackie Semlar, Karlee Adams, Maddie Millsap and Sierra Smith. With only the two seniors graduating from the varsity, Coach Valdovinos believes there will be tremendous competition for spots on the varsity next year. Coach V says the more competition there is, the better the team will be. He wraps up by saying the future looks bright for the Lady Cats’ softball program.

Are YOU Smarter Than An 8th Grader?

Sulphur Springs Middle School 8th grade students are participating in a unique event today at Shannon Oaks Church and The ROC at First Baptist Church. The first ever “Are You Smarter Than An 8th Grader” STARRS test review game show is being held at the two locations from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event, which kicked off on Monday, is an unconventional and effective way for the students to better prepare themselves for the standardized tests to be taken this week.

“Our kids have been studying their STARR reviews and they are challenging leaders of the community who are coming in to play,” SSMS History teacher and Dare to Dream coordinator Jeff Harris said. “Those adults are trying to answer the question ‘Am I Smarter than an 8th grader?’ And so far they aren’t. We are winning!”

“This is a fun way for the kids to review for the STARR. We’re leaving the campus to have a break and to get the kids fresh before they take the test on Wednesday and Thursday,” Harris said. The event also opens up more classrooms for students in the 6th and 7th grade levels to take their tests.

When asked if the event would become a yearly occurrence Harris said, “if that’s what our administrators would like to do, but it sure has been a success this year. We created this idea out of a need to get off campus and it’s been a smash hit for our kids.”

Sulphur Springs Police Chief Jay Sanders and Hopkins County Paramedic Tabitha Vaught appeared on the KSST Good Morning Show to promote “The Connection”, a 9-1-1 fun and education event planned for Saturday May 21 from 10am until 2pm on Celebration Plaza. The connection that links the citizens of the community to necessary services is 9-1-1, and that includes SSPD, Hopkins County Sheriff’s Department, Fire Departments, EMS, DPS, Game Wardens and other agencies.

“The Connection” event will provide plenty of opportunities to learn how important 9-1-1 is when a crises arises, and how quickly local service providers are equipped to respond. There will be food, bounce houses, demonstrations and information booths. You can get up close to fire and emergency vehicles and even see an EMS helicopter as it lands near the plaza.

The event is free to the public and planned as a celebration of EMS Week and Police Week during National Healthcare Month.

Registration is currently underway for summer and fall classes. For further information call 903-885-1232 or go by the campus at1137 Loop 301 East.

Graduating high school seniors are again receiving a great deal from Paris Junior College this summer — a scholarship covering tuition for one class in either Summer I or Summer II semesters.

The summer tuition scholarship is available to those graduating from high schools in the PJC service area in Hopkins, Hunt, Delta, Fannin, Lamar, and Red River counties to set them on a path to finish more quickly at PJC.

“A graduating high school senior can take a core academic class and save money,” said PJC President Dr. Pam Anglin, “or take a workforce class that can lead to a career. We want our students to be successful, and PJC offers great savings for a great education through small class sizes and personalized attention from our experienced instructors. No student will find themselves in a class of 300 run by a teaching assistant at PJC.”

To help students succeed starting in the fall, PJC has again been allocated $1 million in scholarship funds from the Paris Junior College Memorial Foundation. Scholarships for $1,000 are available for the 2016-17 academic year. Awards are already being made, so students should apply for those funds as soon as possible.

The link to the scholarship application may be found by going to http://www.parisjc.edu/scholarships. High school seniors wanting the summer class scholarship should enter “graduating senior 2016” in the scholarship application box that asks for “semester/year to attend PJC.”

Early registration is going on now for the summer and fall semesters. For questions or more information about the scholarship opportunity, contact Amie Cato at 903-782-0431 or [email protected], or Sheila Reece at 903-782-0211 or [email protected].
