Library Pest Control Notice Excites Local Social Media

Fleas at the Public Library?? Hope Cain, Librarian, says, “Please don’t be alarmed, all is well at Sulphur Springs Public Library!  We live in East Texas… East Texas is dear to our hearts…East Texas is also full of bugs.”

The library is under a pest control management on a quarterly basis, but sometimes bugs get past us.  Because of the quick span of a flea’s life and their unique life cycle stages, the library has decided to take evasive action.  Some fleas were seen on the sticky bug traps recently and in order to halt the fleas and their hatching eggs, a special bug spray is in order.

Saturday,  Sept. 17, the library will close a little early, at 12:30, to allow pest control to visit.

Cain says, “All is well here at Sulphur Springs Public Library!”

Floyd and Martha Payton want to say, “‘Thank You’ for the honor and thanks for the service bestowed on Floyd from the Tira Council and friends in the community.” The former mayor was honored with a reception at the Tira Community Center on Tuesday, September 6th. Regina Payton was visiting her parents and was privileged to attend the reception, also. Brad Payton came for a visit on Sunday afternoon before Labor Day. He had to return home on Tuesday morning. Martha shares, “Floyd has improved a bit, but still has room for more improvement. We thank you for the cards, phone calls and well wishes he has received.”

Meeting for their monthly noon luncheon at Don Lalos’ Restaurant were North Hopkins friends Jo Nell Crowson Willis, Wynelle Lawson Belz, Virginia (Julie) Price Miller, Gale Milligan, Betty Weir and Edna Crowson Perry, all of the Sulphur Springs area. Joining them for the first time was Cathy Mobley Baird of Lone Oak.

The North Hopkins Alumni Homecoming will be coming up before long. It’s scheduled for Saturday, October 8th. All former students and staff are encouraged to attend. The Classes of 1966, 1976, and 1986 will be honored for their 50-, 40-, & 30-year reunion. We’ve been trying to reach out to the students from these classes, and would appreciate you helping us spread the word. The event will begin at 4:30 with bingo, visiting, and registration. A barbecue dinner will be served at 5:30, followed by a program, around 6:00, and then the Monday Night Jam band, which features several former NH students, will provide musical entertainment. Tickets will be sold at the door for $12.50 per person.

New playground equipment has been installed at the Tira Community Center. It will be a nice place for the neighborhood children, and children attending gatherings at the center, to play.

I always need and appreciate input from my friends to help keep me informed of news in our community. If you have any news pertaining to Tira residents, past or present, please contact me, Jan Vaughn, at 903-945-2190 or 903-438-6688 or [email protected].

Miller Grove News

by Brandon Darrow

Where did the cooler weather go?  For several days it was so nice but now we’re in the upper 90’s again and hoping for some rain.

L.J. Skillman recently sent me an email filling me in Miller Grove Graduating Class of 1949.  She said that the classmates and other friends met on Fri., Sept. 9, at Whataburger in Sulphur Springs.  Attendees included (followed by graduation year):  Lillie Belle Davis Renshaw (1946), Johnny McWilliams (1949), Ruby Nell McWilliams Moseley (1949), Mildred Davis Abbott (1949), Patsy Wood Yates (1951), Gail Mercer Hatcher (1954), Ruby Ann Bishop Ross (1953) & husband Norman Ross, Johnny Ferguson (1949) & wife Mary Lynn, Mary Lou Ferguson Akins (1941), Ava Jean Taylor Birmingham (1949), Emma Sue Taylor Loftin (1953), Octave Woods (1950), and Linell Barrett Woods (1953).  L.J. and her father, Milus Robinson (1949) hosted and coordinated the gathering.  Everyone from the group had a good time and enjoyed reminiscing and visiting with friends.  Some of the folks from the group were locals with Ava Jean made the trip from Garland and Mildred made the trek from Cleburne, TX.

Congratulations to my good friends, Clark and Lindsey (Watson) Cipoletta, who met their newest son, Boston James Cipoletta, on Sept. 14.  He weighed 8 lbs, 4 oz, and was 20 inches long.  Mom, dad, and brother Maddox are all doing well.  Maternal grandparents are Richard and Sandi Watson of Sulphur Springs and maternal great-grandmother is Yvonne Skelton, also of Sulphur Springs.

I also learned that MG graduates Weston and Mackenzie (Taylor) House are expecting a baby with the due date of May 9, 2017.  Congratulations to them.

Thursday was Miller Grove’s Cross Country Meet.  I’m not sure of the outcome but when I passed the school that afternoon I saw quite a few runners and spectators on hand.

Continue to keep in mind that Miller Grove PTO has coordinated a Glow Run for Oct. 8.  Now, don’t think this is just a plain old glow run.  That is the farthest from the truth I assure you.  So far, besides the run, we have a Monty Tipps and Mainstreet that will be providing live music.  The Ag students will be serving BBQ, the Senior class will have a glow painting booth, and Sheriff Lewis Tatum will kick the night off with the starting of the race.  The PTO is hoping for a good showing of supporters for the first annual run, so please come out and enjoy yourself.

Happy Birthday to Larry Mabe & Mark Garrett on Sept. 20, Tyler Darrow on Sept. 22, and Jerald Wren & Marisha Harrison on Sept. 24.
Happy 54th Anniversary to Johnny & Mary Lynn Ferguson on Sept. 22.  Happy 39th Anniversary to Paul & Bonnie (Millsap) Garrett on Sept. 24.
As you travel the highways and byways don’t forget that all roads lead back home and back to Miller Grove. Please send me any newsworthy information. My email address is [email protected].

Arbitron Ratings Show KSST Continues as Hopkins County Favorite

Arbitron Ratings Show KSST Continues as Hopkins County Favorite

Since 1947, KSST radio has earned the respect of Sulphur Springs and Hopkins County for consistent coverage in local news, weather, and sports. That tradition, along with good music, has made KSST the most listened to radio station in Hopkins County.  According to Arbitron ratings, KSST continues to hold the number one listener favorite position in the county.

“I am not surprised,” stated Chad Young who purchased KSST over two years ago. Young said, “The numbers confirm what we have always known. KSST is the voice of Hopkins County and Sulphur Springs.”

During the recent Texas Association of Broadcasters Convention in Austin, representatives of TAPSCAN presented the numbers to KSST. The surveys used took into consideration listener’s choices in Hopkins County during the hours of 6 a.m. until midnight, seven days per week. Those 12-years of age and older were chosen for the surveyed. The representative for Arbitron told KSST officials that the numbers for KSST were amazingly high.

KSST rated first, followed by a contemporary Christian Radio station located in the metroplex. The third place radio station is a local station that is a member of a group of 10 stations located in East Texas. Two country and western stations in Dallas, a talk radio station in Dallas, and a local country station round out the top seven. A Winnsboro Southern Gospel station was 8th and three stations tied for 10th.

General Manager Jim Rogers said, “The lineup of programming including our afternoon drive and early morning programming combine to provide varied entertainment with 50’s, 60’s, 70’s, Good Times Oldies as a music core. Our severe weather coverage is trusted and ever present when severe thunderstorms, tornados, or ice and snow storms hit the area. Our news and sports coverage, supported by ksstradio.com, gives local residents a well-rounded look at what is happening in the communities that comprise Hopkins County. “

In sports coverage, KSST has always been the official Wildcat and Lady Cat Station covering volleyball, football, basketball, soccer, baseball, and softball on the high school level.  Texas Rangers Baseball has been a part of KSST life for several years. KSST is one of the few Northeast Texas radio stations to carry the Rangers. Texas A & M and Texas Tech football give listeners the opportunity to hear two of the more popular teams in the area and an opportunity to hear two of the best college divisions in football—Big 12 and SEC.

The Texas State Network delivers hourly news reports of interest to Texans during the day.

Farm news also plays a distinct role at KSST. From 5 a.m. until 6:15 a.m. each morning various farm related programming along with reports from the Texas Farm Bureau Network keep agrilife up to date on needed information.

KSST also provides spiritual encouragement daily with Family Minute, Central Minute, and a Sunday line up of music, messages, and church services.

There is something for everyone on KSST and that keeps the residents of Hopkins County coming back every day.

Parents of scientifically inclined young people should make plans to attend a special presentation to be held at Paris Junior College on September 29.

The School of Health Professions at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center is conducting the program. Speaking will be Dr. Brandy Greenhill, Associate Professor and Program Director – Clinical Laboratory Science.

Through an articulation agreement, students who successfully complete PJC’s laboratory sciences program have guaranteed entry into the School of Health Professions – the very small, very competitive scientific programs at the UT-MD Anderson Cancer Center. Saving tens of thousands of dollars is also an advantage. PJC offers very affordable higher education for a student’s first two years.

The articulation programs include:

  • clinical laboratory science – which uses detective work to diagnose disease;
  • cytogenetic technology – which studies chromosomes to diagnose and treat genetic disease;
  • cytotechnology – which studies cells to detect and diagnose disease;
  • histotechnology – which is the cutting edge of tissue analysis; and
  • molecular genetic technology – going to the genetic level to detect and monitor disease.

The program, which will begin at 12:15 p.m. in the Math & Science Building on the PJC campus in Paris, is expected to last about an hour, and the types of classes needed and expectations of students, as well as more details about the program, will be included.

RSVPs are requested by Sept. 27 to Dr. Jack Brown, PJC Science Division Chair, at [email protected] or 903-782-0319.
