Hospital District Board to Name Operations Manager
Hopkins County Hospital District Board of Directors will meet Monday, October 24, 2016 in the Plaza Conference Room at 6 p.m. The Hospital District Board continues to meet and transact business that affects the 49% ownership in the local hospital.
The board will consider capital purchases for an ambulance remount for Medic 6, a radio repeater and antenna link and equipment and furniture for an EMS station.
Reports to the board will be made by CHRISTUS Mother Francis Hospital Sulphur Springs President/CEO Paul Harvey and District Operations Manager’s Report by Ron Folwell. Folwell is also on the agenda to be named District Operations Manager.
In Executive Session the board will hear the CMS Update.

Maddie Peavler, left, was named Fall Festival Cover Girl. Cami Froneberger, second from right was named First Runner up and Miss Congeniality. Also competing were Demi Weatherford and Jessica Smithers. Aliegh Bessonett concluded her reign as Cover girl with the naming of Peavler as Cover Girl.
Maddie Peavler, the daughter of Amber and Ken Sharp, and Tim Peavler, is a Junior at Yantis High School was named Fall Festival Cover Girl Saturday evening on the final day of the event. She is the FFA Vice-President and on the Show Team , a Cheerleader, plays on the tennis team, and competes in UIL Feature Writing. She also works at the Brookshires in Emory. Maddie plans to go to college to become a dentist or dental hygienist. She would love to go to Texas A&M University, but Baylor has a great Dental Program.
Named First Runner up and Miss Congeniality was Cami Froneberger, the daughter of Andrew and Jennifer Froneberger. Cami is a Junior at Miller Grove High School. She is involved with her youth group and volunteers at the Hopkins County Heritage Museum and Park. Cami plans to go to Texas A&M University to pursue a degree to become a Veterinarian.
Concluding her reign as Cover girl was Aleigh Bessonett, a Senior at Miller Grove High School. She is the daughter of Bill and Cherrie Bessonett. As a Lady Hornet, Aleigh participates in Cross Country, Basketball and Track. She is involved in National Honor Society,and 4-H, and is a member of the Brashear Baptist Youth Group. Aleigh would like to attend college to become a Social Worker or a Physical Therapist. Aleigh’s mother Cherrie George Bessonett, was the 1985 Cover Girl winner. Aleigh and Cherrie are the first Mother – Daughter Cover Girl winners in the history of the contest.

11th Annual Corvette Show on Celebration Plaza Saturday
The 11th Annual Corvette Show begins at 8 a.m. and continue through the day at Celebration Plaza in Sulphur Springs. Almost 200 Corvettes are expected this year, according to David Brewer with the Sulphur Springs Corvette Club.
Early arrivals enjoyed dinner and entertainment at the Sulphur Springs Country Club Friday evening. Saturday, the Corvettes will be parked at the Plaza for public viewing and various levels of show competition.
Brewer invites the public to attend the show.
Lady Cats Set School Record With Win
The Lady Cats’ volleyball team set the school record for victories in a season and tightened their grip on second place in the district as they cruised by Mt. Pleasant, 3-0 at the Sulphur Springs Middle School Gym Friday. Score was 25-15, 25-10 and 25-10. The win was the 29th of the season for the Lady Cats, the most in school history. Last year’s team had 28 wins.
The Lady Cats can wrap up second place in the district with a win next Tuesday night at Marshall. Friday the Lady Cats were led by Rita Hill and Kaylee Jefferson at the net. Hill had 9 kills and Jefferson 7. Autumn Tanton added 6 and Mieke Van Benthem 5. Tori Moore had 24 assists and 2 service aces. Jefferson and Anden Hammack had one service ace apiece. Hammack had 9 digs, Moore 7 and Imani Taylor 4. In Block Assists, VanBenthem had 4, Hill 3 and Tanton, Jefferson and Madi Vickery 1 each.
If the Lady Cats finish second, they will meet Forney in a bi-district playoff. Forney defeated the Lady Cats in tournaments at Garland and Wills Point early in the season.
Mt Pleasant 19 Wildcats 16; Field Goal in Last Seconds
Mt. Pleasant back up place kicker Sammy Puente kicked a 29 yard field goal with just 3-seconds left in the game as the Tigers defeated the Wildcats, 19-16 at Gerald Prim Stadium Friday night. The kick culminated a beat the clock drive down the field by the Tigers in the games last minutes. The drive came after the Wildcats had tied the score at 16-16 on an Angel Tavera field goal at the 3:59 mark of the fourth quarter.
The Wildcats scored on their first drive of the game as quarterback Ryan Humphries ran 23 yards for a touchdown to wrap up an 80 yard drive. Mt. Pleasant tied the game with a touchdown just before the end of the first quarter. The Tigers scored the only touchdown of the second quarter to take a 14-7 lead. The Wildcats attempt to tie the score before halftime was unsuccessful as they turned the ball over on downs near the Tigers 20 yard line. The Wildcats almost tied the game early in the fourth quarter. They scored on a short run by Lawrence Worth to make it 14-13 with the extra point kick pending. That kick was blocked and the Tigers returned it all the way down the field to earn two points to take a 16-13 lead at the 10:50 mark.
The Wildcats slip to 1-3 in district play and 2-6 for the season. They face must win games at Greenville and at home against Hallsville. Mt. Pleasant is now 2-3 in district play and 2-7 for the season. The Tigers face another must win game against Greenville at home on November 4.
Friday Morning Fall Festival Fun!
Fall Festival is in full swing! Arts and crafts vendors are set up throughout the Sulphur Springs High School covered walk way and cafeteria. Hand painted signs, jewelry, bows, and more can be found here. The Lone Star BMX Show entertained children and adults alike in the circle drive of the Civic Center and the Kids Zone includes a bounce house under the trees. Inside the Civic Center, clothing vendors and much more can be found.
Sewing, Hay Bale Stacking, and Chicken Cutting: Cover Girl Thursday Night Competition
Thursday night concluded the second, and final, night of challenges for four Hopkins County girls competing for the Cover Girl title. The girls competed in three events; sewing, hay bale stacking, and chicken cutting. The night started out with current Cover Girl, Aleigh Bessonett, showing the girls the ropes to hay bale stacking. The square bales had to be carried from one end of the area to the other and stacked in an “I” or “H” shape. Two of the girls got creative and found a way to carry two at a time, improving their score. Aleigh Bessonett then randomly chose the pattern that the girls would sew and showed them how it’s done. In the final event, the girls had to cut up a chicken and name the parts they cut. All the poor chickens got nicknames and the girls had a blast!
