Game Day: Home Games for Baseball, Softball
Hammack on Texas High
Wildcats Baseball Coach Jerrod Hammack says the Wildcats have a good rivalry with Texas High, who the Wildcats play Tuesday night (March 20) at home at new Wildcat Park. There is a JV contest at 4 p.m. followed by the varsity game at 7 p.m. Coach Hammack says he has a lot of respect for the coaching staff at Texas High. He says they are probably his closest friends in the coaching profession. Coach Hammack says he has known them for a long time and they do a good job. He says the Tigers have quite a few returners from last year’s team, perhaps even more than the Wildcats do. Coach Hammack says the Tigers did lose a player who was their shortstop and #1 pitcher. He says they will present quite a challenge. Coach Hammack notes that the Wildcats have always played well at home against the Tigers even though the Tigers will be visiting a new Wildcats’ baseball home Tuesday night. The Tigers have had a bye in district play and they come into the game Tuesday with a 1-0 record. The Wildcats are 2-0 in district play. Coach Hammack says the winner Tuesday will be in the driver’s seat early in the district race. He says as a player, this type of game is what you play the game for. Ryan Humphries will pitch for the Wildcats. Coach Hammack is expecting another big crowd and he hopes Lady Cats’ softball fans will visit Wildcat Park when the softball game is over.
Carrillo on Texas High
Lady Cats Softball Coach David Carrillo expects more of the same as the Lady Cats host Texas High for a district game at Lady Cat Park Tuesday evening (March 20). He anticipates another close, nail-biting game. Coach Carrillo says Texas High is a very good team. He says they have a very good pitcher but he says all district teams have a really good pitcher. Coach Carrillo says his Lady Cats’ offense will once again be called on to find a way to score some runs. He says the Lady Tigers’ pitcher also faced the Lady Cats twice last year. Coach Carrillo says she held the Lady Cats over in Texarkana but he adds the Lady Cats got to her some at Lady Cat Park last season. Coach Carrillo says the Lady Tigers pitcher throws hard, moves the ball around, mixes her pitchers and tries to get batters to chase her rise ball. Coach Carrillo says all the tough games in district are hard to go through as a coach but he says they will make district teams battle tested for the playoffs. So far the Lady Cats have found ways to win. They are 4-0 in district play, tying the best start by a David Carrillo-coached Lady Cats team. The 2015 team also got off to a 4-0 start. There will be a JV contest at 4:30 p.m. with the varsity game to follow at 6 p.m. at Lady Cat Park.
Soccer Game Day: Senior Night for Wildcats Against Hallsville; Lady Cats Travel to Hallsville
Wiggins on Hallsville
Once again, in boys’ district soccer, it comes down to the Wildcats and Hallsville in the last district game for both teams to determine a playoff spot. The winner take all match takes place Tuesday evening (March 20) at Gerald Prim Stadium at 7 p.m. on Senior Night. The district’s fourth and final playoff spot is up for grabs. The winner is expected to face Lovejoy in a bi-district match. The past two seasons, the Wildcats have won at Hallsville in the district’s last game for both to claim a playoff spot. Wildcats Soccer Coach Nicky Wiggins is hoping the trend continues. Both teams come in with 5-6 district records and 15 points. Hallsville won at home 2-1 in the first half of district play. Coach Wiggins says the Bobcats are pretty good and he says they play hard. He says Hallsville has a good goal scoring forward. He scored goals against the Wildcats last season and earlier this year. Coach Wiggins says the Wildcats will have to keep an eye on him. Despite the earlier loss to the Bobcats, Coach Wiggins says he thought the Wildcats were the better team. A penalty kick was the difference in the Wildcats 2-1 loss at Hallsville. Coach Wiggins says the team that will win will be the one that makes a few more plays, doesn’t turn the ball over and scores goals. There is a JV contest at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday with the varsity match to follow at 7 p.m. at Gerald Prim Stadium.
Bailey on Hallsville
The Lady Cats’ soccer team has a very tough assignment in their final district game on the schedule. The Lady Cats face Hallsville on the road Tuesday night (March 20). The Lady Bobcats have already wrapped up the district championship by a wide margin. They have not allowed a single goal in district play. Hallsville has only lost 3 games this entire season. Lady Cats Coach Joel Bailey says the Lady Bobcats are a very good team and he adds they have had an amazing season. He says it will also be Senior Night so he expects lots of emotion from Hallsville. Coach Bailey hopes his Lady Cats can sneak up on Hallsville. The good news for the Lady Cats is that they are cemented in third place in the district standings. Pine Tree can catch the Lady Cats in points if they defeat Texas High Tuesday but Coach Bailey says the Lady Cats own the goal differential tie breaker against the Lady Pirates. The Lady Cats enter the Hallsville game with a 7-4 district record and 21 points. The Lady Cats are expected to play Wylie East in a bi-district playoff game next week. Tuesday night there will be a JV game at 5:30 p.m. with a varsity game to follow at 7 p.m. in Hallsville.

Based on the Wildcats performance at a district preview at Rockwall Golf and Athletic Club before spring break, Coach Owens says he expects to district race to come down to Hallsville, Texas High and the Wildcats battling for the two spots to qualify for the regional tournament.
The Wildcats play next at The Cascades Golf Club at Tyler next Monday in a tournament sponsored by All Saints Episcopal School.

Teen Click It or Ticket Campaign Begins Thursday
AUSTIN – Texas teens have an important message for their friends and fellow students: Always buckle up. The message is part of the Texas Department of Transportation’s annual “Teen Click It or Ticket” campaign, in partnership with high school students, to urge young drivers and their passengers to wear their seat belts every time they’re in a vehicle.
“In Texas, 42 percent of all teenagers killed in traffic crashes in 2016 weren’t buckled up,” said TxDOT Executive Director James Bass. “We know seat belts save lives, but only if motorists use them. We want to make sure this message gets through to teens, and no one knows how to reach teens better than other teens.”
Partnering with students from the Texas-based group Teens in the Driver Seat, TxDOT’s “Teen Click It or Ticket” campaign will reach teens through radio and TV public service announcements, social media and peer-to-peer outreach at statewide high schools. The initiative kicks off Thursday with an entirely student-run press conference at Memorial High School in Houston.
Teens also will lead interactive events at high schools and sporting events this spring to convince their peers that seat belts are their best defense against being killed or badly injured in a crash. A mangled truck involved in a rollover crash will be on display at each event. Two Texas teens survived that crash with only minor scratches thanks to their seat belts. The campaign also will offer teens the digital experience of wearing virtual reality goggles to test their reaction times.
“Research from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration tells us that new teen drivers are twice as likely to be in a fatal crash as adults,” said Bryce Cunningham, co-chair of the Teens in the Driver Seat national Teen Advisory Board and a senior at Chisum High School in Paris, Texas. “It just doesn’t make any sense to not wear your seat belt when you’re in a vehicle.”
In Texas in 2016, one in five vehicle crashes involved a teen driver. Of the 269 teen drivers and passengers killed in crashes that year, 114 were unbuckled.
Texas law requires drivers and all passengers to wear a seat belt. Unbuckled drivers and passengers — even those in the back seat — face fines and court costs up to $200.
