Wildcat Tennis Collected Five Medals at Hallsville Tourney

Wildcats Tennis Coach Tony Martinez said he was happy and perhaps a little amazed by his team’s showing at their first tournament at Hallsville Friday (January 25) in cold weather. He said the team collected five medals.

Coach Martinez had said before the match he expected his team to play deeper into tournaments this season. They did that. He said in year’s past, the team exited tournaments quickly. Coach Martinez said he was pleased his team got so much on the court experience.

#1 boys singles player Jonah Kirkpatrick lost his first match in bitter cold weather but then rallied in a consolation final match to win the Boys A Singles. Coach Martinez said the boys doubles team of Aaron Lucas and Logan Schumacher lost a match to a team from Shreveport that won the tournament but then rallied to take third place in Boys A Doubles. Due to an injury, Coach Martinez said he put a couple of freshmen together in Mixed Doubles. He said Emily Dick and Alex Romero had experience playing together in the 8th grade. They ended up taking 4th place. He also paired senior Zoe Wilson with freshman Paige Miesse in Girls Doubles.

They lost in the consolation final. Coach Martinez said he also went to a pair that played together last year as Brandon Dittrich and Michael McCord lost in the final match in Boys B Doubles finishing second.

The Wildcats play in a Waxahachie tournament this Friday. In the field is a powerful Red Oak team.

Cumby Robotics Team Qualifies for 2019 VEX State and National Competitions
Team member Kadden Cota explains the playing field and actions that the robots perform

According to Ms. Lee Gifford, Robotics coach at Cumby ISD, the award-winning Cumby team will be going to State and National VEX Robotics meets during the Spring of 2019, hoping once again to qualify for the World title. The team earned the right to advance during a meet on Saturday January 26 where 20 teams competed to qualify for only two available slots.

The VEX Robotics program at Cumby ISD is similar to programs in schools of all sizes. Rather then being a UIL event, the VEX program is one where the school system may purchase a kit and form a class which will build the robots and operate them according to game rules at meets scheduled by VEX. Each semester, a new game is introduced for team competition. The rules of play are the same for every team in every school, whether large-city schools or in small rural school districts. This is the seventh year that Cumby ISD has participated in a VEX program. The current team of six students includes four Seniors who were winners of the World title in 2017.

Twenty teams attended the qualifying match on January 26 at Cumby ISD, which hosted teams from Caddo Mills, Greenville, Lone Oak, Dodd City and others. The Sulphur Bluff team which won the Design award, and the Cumby team which earned the Excellence Award, qualified for the two slots for advancement. The State qualifier will be held in late February. The National games will be held in March in Council Bluffs, Iowa. The schools may schedule fundraisers toward expenses for the Nationals trip.

Team members shown below are: standing, Jadryen Long, Ken Chapin and Cillian Smith. Seated are Kadden Cota, Akayshia Smith and Lacy Jacobs.

This would be Howards Pharmacy on Broadway. It’s Christmastime due to the decorations, and the sign on the register announcing a ‘Free Christmas Diner’.

I don’t recall the year, but the lady in the light pants suit, the saleslady is/was my mother, Opal Bailey, so the year was around 1968, the store was the old Gibson’s that became Howards, so I believe that was after Howards took over.
