The Wildcats’ baseball team closed out their play in this year’s Rose City Classic with one-run wins over Waxahachie, 4-3 and over Forney, 2-1 Saturday (February 23) at Mike Carter Field in Tyler. Wildcats Baseball Coach Jerrod Hammack said his team pitched well today.
Going into the tournament, Coach Hammack said he hoped to get in most of their scheduled games in the tournament. The Wildcats got two games in Thursday, had a rain out Friday against Amarillo and then played the two games Saturday. The Wildcats went 3-1 in the tournament defeating host Tyler Lee as well as Waxahachie and Forney. The Wildcats lone loss was to district rival Lindale Thursday, 3-1.
The Wildcats, 3-1 for the season, are scheduled to play North Lamar Monday at 7 p.m. at Wildcat Park.

PJC Names 2019 Mr. and Miss PJC

Paris Junior College sophomores Cannon Davis and Katie Cullum were named Mr. & Miss PJC 2019 on Wednesday, Feb. 20.
Faculty and staff nominate students for this honor. The students must be graduating sophomores taking a minimum of 12 semester hours with at least a 2.75 GPA.
Cullum is a 2017 graduate of Hudson High School, a member of the softball team and Phi Theta Kappa, the two-year college honor society, and the daughter of Dessie Cullum of Lufkin.
Davis is a 2017 graduate of College Station High School, a member of the baseball team and Phi Theta Kappa, and the son of Trae and Bohnnie Davis of College Station.
TxDOT Plans for Week of February 25, 2019 in Paris District
Paris — Here’s a look at work planned in the district during the week of Feb. 25, 2019. These schedules are subject to change due to weather conditions, equipment failure or other unforeseen issues. Motorists are advised to remain alert and pay special attention to all signs, barricades and traffic controls, and reduce their speed as they approach and travel through work zones. They should also avoid distractions such as cell phones, eating, drinking, or car audio or navigation systems.
Sulphur Springs Area (Hopkins, Franklin Counties):
SH 154, Hopkins County: From SH 11 to Loop 301. Watch for lane closures and short traffic delay as crews begin base and curb repairs in preparation of upcoming surfacing operations.
SH 19, Hopkins County: At Interstate Highway 30. Watch for workers placing counters for an upcoming traffic study at this location.
SH 37, Franklin County: From Mt. Vernon to Winnsboro. Watch for lane closures and short traffic delays as crews perform surfacing operations; flaggers will direct traffic.
Paris Area (Delta, Lamar, Red River Counties)
SH 24 expansion, Delta County: from Cooper, Texas, southwestward towards Commerce. Watch for work zones and drive safely through construction areas while this roadway is being widened and improved. The inside southbound lane remains closed.
SH 37 safety upgrades, Red River County: from the Texas-Oklahoma state line south to the Red River-Franklin County line. Watch for work zones as workers upgrade metal-beam guard fence, replace or extend new structures and install safety end treatments.
US 271 pavement repair, Lamar and Red River Counties: from Loop 286 in Paris southeastward to SH 37. Watch for temporary lane and/or shoulder closures as metal beam guard fence replacement continues.
FM 197, Lamar County: Watch for temporary lane closures as workers widen and reconstruct existing pavement.
US 271 safety upgrades, Red River County: from FM 410 to the Red River-Titus County line. Watch for temporary lane and shoulder closures as work continues.
FM 2648 widening, Lamar County: Watch for temporary, one-lane daytime closures as workers widen and rehabilitate the roadway, and safety treat cross drainage structures.

Soccer: Lady Cats, Wildcats Pick Up District Win Against Texas High
Lady Cats Soccer 2, Texas High 1 (Lady Cats won on penalty kicks, 3-2)
The Lady Cats’ soccer team broke into the district win column defeating Texas High in penalty kicks 3-2 to take a 2-1 win at Gerald Prim Stadium Friday evening (February 22). The teams battled to a 1-1 tie in regulation. Texas High scored in the first minute of the first half. The Lady Cats evened the match at 1-1 in the second half on a Brooke Harden goal assisted by Keeley Hudgins. The score remained tied at 1-1 through two scoreless halves of overtime. That’s when penalty kicks determined the winner. Trailing in PK’s 1-0 after one kicker, the Lady Cats got three successful penalty kick goals from Baylie Arrington, Hudgins and Alli Stephens. Goalkeeper McKenna Gammill secured the victory with three PK saves. Next the Lady Cats travel to Royse City to face perhaps the district’s toughest team. That match will mark the end of the first half of district play.
Wildcats Soccer 1, Texas High 0
The Wildcats’ soccer team outscored Texas High, 1-0 in Texarkana on a soggy Friday evening (February 22). The Wildcats goal was scored by Enrique Arellano assisted by Andrew Escobar. The Wildcats improve to 1-3 in district play with the win. Wildcats Soccer Coach Alexi Upton said it was a frustrating game because he felt his team should have scored a lot more goals. However Coach Upton said he would take the win adding he was proud of his team. The Wildcats complete the first half of district play Tuesday at home against Royse City.

Lady Cat Continue Undefeated in Allen Tournament
The Lady Cats’ softball team used a 6 run third inning to take the lead and then the Lady Cats put down a Waco Midway uprising in the last inning to take a 6-4 win on day two of the Allen Varsity Invitational Softball Tournament on Friday (February 22).
Midway scored 3 runs in the top of the fifth but their rally fell short. Both teams had 7 hits and neither team committed an error. Among highlights in the 6 run third for the Lady Cats: Maddie Millsap hit a solo home run, her third of the season, Alli Fite singled in a run, Sierra Smith was hit by a pitch and a run was forced in and Kate Womack had an RBI on a fielder’s choice. Landri Bell also had an RBI in the big inning. Sadie Stroud had 2 hits in 3 at bats and she scored a run. Kelsey Wallace hit a double. Bailey Haggerty got the pitching win throwing 94 pitches, working 5 innings, allowing 7 hits and 4 earned runs with 7 strikeouts and 3 walks.
With the win, the Lady Cats improved to 9-0 for the season. The Lady Cats’ scheduled second game Friday with Wylie East was postponed due to rain. On Saturday, the Lady Cats are scheduled to play Frisco Independence at 1 p.m. at Allen Station 4.

Wildcats to Play Two Saturday; Friday Postponed by Rain
The #10 ranked Wildcats’ baseball team had their game with Amarillo postponed by rain in the Rose City Classic Friday at Mike Carter Field in Tyler. The Wildcats are 1-1 for the season. They are scheduled to play a pair of games on Saturday, weather permitting.
The Saturday schedule calls for a game against Waxahachie at 10 a.m. followed by a contest with Forney at noon. On the tournament’s opening day Thursday, the Wildcats defeated host Tyler Lee, 2-0 and then lost to district foe Lindale, 3-1.

Wildcat on to Regional Quarter Final; Hold Off Midlothian
The Wildcats’ basketball team kept making plays down the stretch to hold off the pesky Midlothian Panthers and win, 62-57 at Forney in an Area round game Friday night (February 22). The Panthers got to within one point in the fourth quarter but could never tie the score or go ahead.
The Wildcats got points from six different players in the decisive final period, Sadaidriene Day Day Hall, Jeremiah Roland, Keaston Willis, Cameron Kahn, Xavier Cork and Grayson McClure.

Hall led the Wildcats with 19 points. Willis had 14 points. Kahn added 13 points. Cork tossed in 11 points. Roland had 3 points and McClure 2 points. The Wildcats got off to a great start and led 14-8 after one quarter. Both teams had 13 points second quarters and the Wildcats led 27-21 at the half. The Panthers outscored the Wildcats 16-13 in the third quarter and the Wildcats entered the fourth quarter up 40-37. The Wildcats outscored Midlothian, 22-20 by win by 5. Great foul shooting was a key to the win. The Wildcats converted 18 of 21 free throw attempts for 85.7%.
One of Midlothian’s top scoring threats, Zeke Bennett, injured his right elbow at the end of the second quarter and did not return. He was held to just 3 points in the first half by Wildcats defensive whiz Roland. The Panthers had three players in double figures: Omari Bobbitt with 18, Nyk Madison with 17 and Hayden Mattiza with 13. Midlothian hit 9 three-point baskets and the Wildcats had 4.
The Wildcats improve their season record to 26-8. The Wildcats will face Lufkin in a Regional Quarterfinal game early next week with details to be determined. Lufkin clobbered Mesquite Poteet, 63-35 Friday night in an Area game.

Saltillo Lady Lions Place 5 on All-District Basketball Team; Sulphur Bluff Has 5 Named
The district champion Saltillo Lady Lions’ basketball team earned four superlatives and had a total of six players on the District 24-A All-District Basketball Team released Friday (February 22). Sulphur Bluff had 5 players chose,
For Saltillo, sophomore Chandler Bain was selected as the district’s Most Valuable Player. Sophomore Anna Reeder was named Offensive Player of the Year and sophomore Maddie Smith was chosen Defensive Player of the Year. Lady Lions Coach Bill Giles was selected as the Coach of the Year. Lady Lions named to the First Team All-District were junior Jocelyn Ochoa and sophomore Brittney Peeples. Making the Second Team All-District for Saltillo was senior Lorena Castro.
Five Sulphur Bluff Lady Bears were named to the All-District Team. Making the First Team were senior Katlyn Rochelle and junior Ann Dorner. Second Team Lady Bears included sophomore Jada Wade, sophomore Alley Collett and senior Makensa Morgan.
