Hopkins County Democrats Meet Tuesday November 19 at 6pm at Pizza Inn

Robert Suson of the Hopkins County Democrats invites you to attend a meeting Tuesday, November 19, 2019 at 6:00 PM at PIZZA INN in Sulphur Springs, 320 Mockingbird Lane.

Please pass the word to friends and fellow Democrats. There will be recognition for person bringing the most guests!”

For some interesting history, in 2010, the Democratic Party adopted a new logo, a capitol letter D inside a blue circle. The better-known “Democratic Donkey” was actually a mascot, not a logo, but stood stubbornly for over 150 years as a symbol of the party. The donkey represented Democratic values in political cartoons for decades, as has the elephant for the Republican party. Now, despite the re-branding with the new national logo, many state and local Democratic parties still use the donkey in their campaign material.

SSISD Fine Arts Department Reports Fine Fall, Planning For Sights, Sounds of Season

Fall is a busy time for the Fine Arts Departments at Sulphur Springs Independent School District, with multiple band and choir contests, group performances and various other activities.

“We’ve had a busy few weeks in the Fine Arts Department and December will be an exciting and very busy time,” said SSISD Fine Arts Coordinator Cindy Welch.

The high school advanced art students have been, using different mediums such as colored pencils, graphite and acrylics, to produce “some marvelous pieces.”

The music department was busy with school Veteran’s Programs and playing for community events.

The Sulphur Springs High School Choir and band trumpeters Nathan Braddy and Triston Stewart performed at the Veteran’s Ceremony downtown.

The high school band and and choir also provided music at the High School Veteran’s Program.

The jazz band performed at the Region 8 School Board Dinner.

Barbara Bush Primary and Travis Primary had some patriotic programs on Nov. 11 as well.

The Addams Family was a hit for the SSHS Theatre Department, reportedly and lots of fun to. The group also hosted a stew pot at the Stew Contest.

SSMS hosted TMEA Middle School Choir and Band Try-outs, with 26 SSMS students each making the region (above) choir and band.

Welch reports the Middle School Band and Choir also “did a great job both making and hosting” the Region 4 Texas Music Educators Association Middle School Try-outs. Twenty-six students made the choir and 26 students made the band.

Blue Blazes Halloween treats

After completing a great season on the field, the Blue Blazes have been serving in the community for the Stew Contest and the Hearts of Hope Banquet. They also provided some “awesome treats” to the staff on Halloween as part of their ongoing High Five Project and are preparing for the Christmas Parade and try-outs.

Strings didn’t have any specific events the past few weeks but they are gearing up for their region clinic/concert the first weekend of December, their Christmas Concert and Solo/Ensemble Contest.

And, these are just a few of the many experiences the fine arts students have gain over the last month.

To finish out November, Bowie Primary third graders are scheduled to present a program at 9 a.m. and 6:3 p.m. Monday, Nov. 18, and members of the High School Freshman Band will participate in the Region Band Try-outs Thursday, Nov. 21, at Pine Tree.

December promises plenty of activity for SSISD Fine Arts students as well, including Choir Pre-Area event, primary programs, participation in the Christmas Parade, Christmas concerts, One Act Play Auditions and theater arts performances, to name a few.

“Look out for our Sights and Sounds of the Season calendar, coming soon,” Welch said.

To keep up with the Fine Arts Department and many activities scheduled for December or any month, check out the department’s calendar on the SSISD website

Police Arrest 3 Following 2 Early Morning Complaints

Police Arrest 3 Following 2 Early Morning Complaints

Two early morning complaints, one of a rolling disturbance and another of a person sleeping in a pickup at a truck stop, resulted in three misdemeanor arrests by police within two hours Saturday.

Sulphur Springs police first responded around 12:20 a.m. Nov. 16 in the area of Davis Street in reference to a complaint of a rolling disturbance in a white sport utility vehicle. Officers stopped a white GMC Suburban in the 200 block of Spence Street for failure to signal a turn into the Abode Apartments.

Upon contact, a 28-year-old Sulphur Springs man reportedly attempted to walk away from police. After numerous requests, the man allegedly refused to comply to present his driver’s license. He was placed into custody for failure to present a driver’s license on request.

Alcohol was allegedly smelled on the 27-year-old passenger’s breath. The Sulphur Springs man was also alleged, in arrest reports, by police to have bloodshot eyes, slurred speech and to be unsteady on his feet. He was arrested for public intoxication, according to arrest reports.

Later, police determined the man did not have a driver’s license nor did he have insurance on the vehicle, resulting in additional charges. The man allegedly became combative with officials and was secured into a “violence” cell, a specially outfitted cell for his protection and that of jail staff.

The 28-year-old SUV driver was booked into jail early Saturday morning, and released again by late Saturday morning on the failure to display driver’s license, no driver’s license and failure to maintain financial responsibility charges. The 27-year-old Sulphur Springs man was also released from jail later Saturday morning on the PI charge, according to jail reports.

Sulphur Springs police also arrested a 21-year-old Yantis man for public intoxication early Saturday morning.

Police were dispatched at 1:56 a.m. Nov. 16 to Love’s Travel Stop, where a person was reportedly sleeping in his vehicle in the parking lot. Upon arrival, the officers arrived and found a man asleep inside of a GMC 1500; it took several trips to awaken the man.

The policeman reported seeing vomit not only on the man, but all over the truck and on the ground beneath his door. Upon stepping out of speak with police, the officer reported the man had slurred speech and bloodshot eyes, was unsteady on his feet, and an alcohol odor emitted from the man and the vomit.

Consequently, the 21-year-old Yantis man was taken to jail for PI. His vehicle was allowed to remain parked on the property. He was released from jail later Saturday morning on the Class C charge, according to jail reports.

Man Jailed Following I-30 Crash East of Sulphur Springs Friday Night

Man Jailed Following I-30 Crash East of Sulphur Springs Friday Night
One man was arrested following a crash in which one of the two vehicles involved overturned onto its side in the ditch just off interstate 30 west Friday night.

State troopers arrested two Sulphur Springs residents overnight Friday, one following a traffic stop and the other following a two-vehicle crash.

At 7:13 p.m. Friday, Nov. 15, Texas Department of Public Safety Trooper Christopher Sorley; Hopkins County Sheriff’s Sgt. Richard Greer, Lt. Amanda Weatherford and Deputy Colton Patterson; HopkinsCounty and Cumby firefighters were dispatched to mile marker 116 on Interstate 30 east to what was reported as a two-vehicle crash in which one of the vehicles had overturned.

Upon arrival, Sorley reported seeing a vehicle that had driven through a barbed wire fence and another vehicle overturned and resting on its passenger side. The driver of a black car, a Chevrolet Impala, reportedly told officials he was possibly rear-ended by another vehicle, but did not remember what had happened. Looking at the vehicle, Sorley reported seeing no damage to the rear end of the car.

The driver, however, was allegedly seen by an eye-witness throwing a beer bottle into the pasture he had driven his car into. A beer bottle was allegedly located by a sheriff’s office office canine and retrieved. Sorley alleged an alcohol odor could be smelled on the driver’s breath as well. The 26-year-old Sulphur Springs man was identified by a USA passport. The man was found by standard field sobriety tests to be intoxicated and arrested for driving while intoxicated, according to arrest reports.

The driver of an overturned pickup at the location alleged the car was traveling east on the south service road and he was traveling west. The black car was allegedly driven into the westbound lane of traffic, causing the pickup driver to swerve to avoid a collision, causing the truck to roll over.

The 26-year-old Impala driver was transported to jail, where he blew readings of 0.157 and 0.144 on Intoxilyzer 9000 breath tests, resulting in his arrest for DWI. The arrest was the second time he has been jailed in Hopkins County for DWI, according to arrest and jail reports.

The man was first arrested on July 31, 2015 for DWI. He was released later that day on $1,000 bond. He was sentenced in 2017 to serve four days in jail in jail, serving July 1-4, 2017, before being released, according to jail reports.

Because the Nov. 15 charge is the man’s second offense, it was enhance to a Class A misdemeanor charge. He remained in Hopkins County jail Saturday morning, Nov. 16, in lieu of $2,000 bond on the second offense, DWI charge, according to jail reports.

Texas Department of Public Safety Highway Patrol vehicle

Trooper Sorley also arrested a 27-year-old Sulphur Springs woman just after midnight Nov. 16 for DWI, according to arrest reports.

Sorley reported stopping a Honda Civic at 12:35 a.m. Saturday on College Street for speeding, specifically driving 35 miles per hour in a 30 mph speed zone. The driver listed a Sulphur Springs address but was identified by a California driver’s license.

The trooper alleged alcohol could be smelled on the 27-year-old woman. When he asked her to stop out of the car, she allegedly admitted to drinking three drinks of vodka and Red Bull mixed, which she claimed were equal to six shots of vodka. The woman was allegedly found using field sobriety tests to be intoxicated, resulting in her arrest for DWI.

The woman was reportedly transported to the county jail, where she blew 0.95 on two breath tests, both over the 0.08 legal limit, resulting in her arrest for DWI, according to arrest reports.

She was released from the county jail by late Saturday morning on $1,000 bond on the DWI charge, according to jail reports.

Sulphur Springs Teen Accused Of Trying To Hide 2 Bags Of Marijuana During Routine Traffic Stop
Hopkins County Sheriff’s Office patrol vehicle

A 17-year-old Sulphur Springs resident was arrested early Saturday morning after allegedly trying to hid bags of marijuana during a traffic stop.

Hopkins County Sheriff’s Deputy Drew Fisher reported stopping a red Chevrolet pickup for a defective head lamp at 1:40 a.m. Nov. 16 in the 100 block of East Shannon Road . On contact with the driver, Fisher alleged he detected a marijuana odor emitting from the truck. The driver reportedly agreed to let Fisher search the vehicle, but the passenger “became very nervous and began trying to tell the driver to deny consent.”

Fisher, in arrest reports, reported he asked the driver to step out of the truck for a pat down; the passenger exited at the same time. The deputy followed the man behind the truck and patted him down as well, but located no contraband on him. A vehicle search also yielded no contraband.

However, Sulphur Springs Police Sgt. Josh Shufeldt, who was assisting with the stop, reported finding a small clear baggy containing marijuana on the ground by the passenger’s side door of the truck, Fisher alleged in arrest reports.

The passenger, identified in arrest reports as 17-year-old Nickolas Gage Diosdado of Sulphur Springs, allegedly admitted to officers that he also had kicked another bag containing marijuana. Consequently, the teen was arrested not only on the misdemeanor possession of less than 2 ounces of marijuana charge but also on a felony tampering with evidence charge, according to arrest reports.

Diosdado remained in the county jail mid morning Saturday, Nov. 16. His bond was set at $1,000 on the Class B misdemeanor marijuana charge and at $10,000 on the third-degree felony tampering with evidence charge, according to jail reports.
