Cumby Boil Warning Lifted For FM 275 North Water Customers
The boil water notice issued Jan. 9 for Cumby water customers on FM 275 north has been lifted, according to the notice Cumby Place 5 Alderman Julie Morris posted on the City of Cumby Facebook page shortly after 4 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 16.
The boil water notice was issued as required by Texas Commission on Environmental Quality due to a water main break

Sulphur Springs ISD Bus Involved In Minor Crash

A Sulphur Springs Independent School District bus was involved in a minor traffic crash Thursday afternoon, Jan. 16, according to SSISD administrators.
“This afternoon one of our buses was hit from behind by a passenger vehicle on College Street. There were students along with the driver on the bus. EMTs checked out the students and the driver, and no injuries were reported,” SSISD Assistant Superintendent Rusty Harden stated in a press release.
Driving Class Offered At Senior Citizens Center
An Affiliated Driving School Class is scheduled Jan. 30 at the Senior Citizens Center. The class is open to all ages, but those planning are asked to sign up as soon as possible to ensure enough will be attending to host the class.
“I need people to sign up for this class before I have to cancel it,” Karon Weatherman, program and marketing director for the Senior Citizens Center.
Those looking for a discount on liability insurance of a class to help with a ticket may want to put this class on their calendars. Those taking the class for these purposes are recommended to contact their insurance agent to verify the discount and the court the ticket was issued for to confirm requirements for ticket dismissal, in advance.
“It is good for 10 percent off of your liability insurance or ticket dismissal. The cost of the class is $15 for insurance discount and $25 for ticket dismissal. The discount is good for 3 years,” Weatherman noted.

Sulphur Bluff Lady Bears Basketball Team Gets District Win Against Bloomburg
The Sulphur Bluff Lady Bears Basketball Team overwhelmed Bloomburg in district play, 67-12 Tuesday (January 14). The Lady Bears outscored Bloomburg in every quarter leading 19-4 after one quarter, 34-9 at the half and 50-12 after three quarters. Skylar Stanley had a big game with 21 points, 12 rebounds, 6 steals and an assist. Bailey Neal scored 11 points, 1 rebound, 2 steals and an assist. Dalena di. Donato had 9 points, 4 rebounds, 2 steals and an assist. Angel Brown had 7 points, 7 rebounds, 6 steals and 2 assists. Jada Wade had 6 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists. Lady Bears Coach Zandra Peyton said Wade also had a big defensive game keeping Bloomburg’s key player from scoring any field goals and limiting her to a pair of free throws. Alley Collett had 5 points and an assist. Molly Kelly had 5 points, 1 rebound, 1 steal and 3 assists. Tori Raine had 3 points, 5 rebounds and 5 steals. Lydia Drummond had 5 rebounds, 1 steal and 1 assist. Coach Peyton said all team members stepped up and had a great game defensively and offensively.

Wildcats and Lady Cats Play in Terrell Tournament Beginning Thursday
The Wildcats Soccer Team opens play Thursday (January 16) in the three-day Terrell Tiger Winter Classic tournament. The Wildcats played in the first game of the tournament facing Kilgore in a match that started at 9:30 a.m. Thursday. It’s the Wildcats only match of the day. The Wildcats will play former district foe Hallsville Friday at 2 p.m. and Seagoville Saturday at 12:30 p.m. If the Wildcats win their group, the they will play in the tournament championship game Saturday at 6:45 p.m. The Wildcats enter the tournament with a record of 2-4-2. Tuesday night the Wildcats tied West Mesquite on the road, 2-2.
The Lady Cats Soccer Team is participating in the Terrell Tiger Winter Blast tournament beginning Thursday. The Lady Cats have two games Thursday. In group play, they face Athens Thursday at 2 p.m. Then the Lady Cats play host Terrell at 8 p.m. On Friday, the Lady Cats conclude group play against Seagoville at 6:30 p.m. If the Lady Cats win their group, they will play in the tournament championship game Saturday at 5 p.m. The Lady Cats come into the tournament looking to get their first victory of the season. Their season record is 0-3-1. The Lady Cats almost got that first win Tuesday at home against Princeton. The Lady Cats had a 3-0 lead but the Lady Panthers scored 4 goals in about 20 minutes to get a 4-3 win.

Sulphur Springs Woman Jailed For Trespassing At Walmart

A 60-year-old Sulphur Springs woman was caught Tuesday afternoon at the Sulphur Springs Walmart. She was found to be trespassing due to being issued two trespass citations within the last 2 years.
A Sulphur Springs police officer reported being contacted by a Walmart employee while at the store on an unrelated call just before 5 p.m. Jan. 14. The store worker reportedly told police he believed the woman was trespassing at the store.
Police contacted her. She was determined to have been issued two prior trespass warnings. She and another woman were reported for a disturbance at Walmart on July 27, 2019; they were accused of selecting less than $100 worth items, concealing them and passed all points of sale without paying for them, according to police reports. She was also jailed May 27, 2018 for theft, according to jail reports. She was issued criminal trespass warnings during those incidents.
She was jailed Jan. 14 on a misdemeanor criminal trespassing charge. She was released from the county jail Jan. 15; bond was set at $1,000 on the charge, according to jail reports.
Cumby Man Accused Of Reckless Driving With Small Child In The Vehicle

A 22-year-old Cumby man was accused Wednesday night of driving recklessly in Sulphur Springs with his 3-year-old and a weapon in the truck with him.
Sulphur Springs Police, in arrest reports, alleged the man was observed by officers driving a silver Chevrolet 1500 at a high rate of speed, 62 miles per hour in a 35 mile per hour speed zone, on Gilmer Street at Kyle Street just before 7:30 p.m. Jan. 15. The pickup, police alleged continued accelerating as it entered the 30 mile per hour speed zone on Gilmer Street. The driver then changed lanes from Oak Avenue to Gilmer Street when unsafe to do so in front of other motorists, Sulphur Springs Police alleged in arrest reports.
Officers contacted the driver in the 200 block of Gilmer Street. Police reported the 22-year-old man was transporting his 3-year-old daughter with disregard to her safety and that of other motorists with his reckless driving. A tan Smith & Wesson handgun was also observed on a magnet without a holster in plain view in the truck, police alleged in arrest reports. The Cumby man driving did not have a license to carry the weapon, according to arrest reports.

Election Workers Needed For Party Primary, General Election
Deadline To Register To Vote Nearing
Republican and Democratic Election Judges and workers are needed for the March 3 Primary Election and the General Election on Nov. 3, according to the clerk’s office.
In order to be a judge or worker the individual must be a registered voter. They will be working Election Day only from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Training is mandatory for the Primary Election, however. Classes are free and open to the public
Five different election worker training sessions are scheduled later this month at Hopkins County Civic Center.

There’s no need to call or email election officials to sign up. Those interested just need to show up at the Civic Center for training on either Monday or Tuesday, Jan. 27 or 28, any one of the available times, according to the county clerk’s office.
Also, those planning to vote in the March 3 Primary Election who are not registered will need to do so soon. The deadline to register to vote is Monday, Feb. 3.

Sulphur Springs Man Sentenced On Controlled Substance Charge

A 35-year-old Sulphur Springs man was sentenced Wednesday to serve 10 months in a state jail for possession of less than 1 gram of a Penalty Group 1 controlled substance, according to arrest and jail reports.
Randy Lynn Webb was scheduled to appear at 9 a.m. Jan. 15 in the district court for a sentencing hearing on the controlled substance charge. Webb was taken into custody at 10:09 a.m. at the courthouse after being sentenced to serve 10 months in a state jail on the 2018 controlled substance charge, according to jail reports.
Webb was arrested along with another man and woman on Dec. 17, 2018, at a College Street residence. Sulphur Springs Police Department Special Crimes Unit investigators reported receiving a tip regarding the location of the other man, who was wanted on a felony charge. They spotted a vehicle matching the description of one associated with the wanted man at the College Street residence, according to arrest reports.
As the homeowner was leaving, she reportedly told officials the wanted man could be found inside the residence. The officers contacted and took the wanted man into custody, then obtained permission and a bedroom, the SCU officers alleged in December 2018 arrest reports. The investigators alleged finding suspected methamphetamine, marijuana and a large amount of drug paraphernalia.
Webb was reported to be inside the residence at the time. He, the wanted man and woman were arrested on the controlled substance charge; he was released from jail the next day on a $5,000 bond, according to arrest and jail reports.
