Beadle Edges Ahead Of Humphries In Election for Constable 2 With 51.45 Percent Of Overall Votes

The only opposed county-level election in Hopkins County, for Constable 2, was close, but when the final unofficial tallies came in Tuesday night, John Brian Beadle had edged ahead of Charles Humphries with 51.45 percent of the Republican ballots cast in in the March 3 Party Primary.

When the early voting totals were in, only 28 votes separated the two Precinct 2 Constable candidates, with Humphries receiving 469 early votes and 23 absentee to Beadle’s 501 early votes and 19 absentee votes.

That margin increased to 68 votes when the final tallies (which won’t be official in any election until canvassed) were in, with Beadle receiving 1,204 votes to Humphries 1,136 votes. That was enough for Beadle to finish with 51.45 percent of the overall votes to Humphries 48.55 percent.

There was no Democratic candidate for Precinct 2 Constable for the Republican winner, Beadle, to face in the General Election in November.

The Tigers increased their lead to 7 points, 38-31 after three quarters. The Wildcats outscored the Tigers by one point in the fourth quarter but it wasn’t enough. The Wildcats got close in the fourth quarter but could not close the gap.

Senior Grayson McClure led the Wildcats with 9 points with 3 three-point baskets. Senior Day Day Hall and junior Lamodrick Johnson both scored 8 points. Senior Cameron Kahn had 6 points. Junior Boo Wilkerson got 5 points. Sophomore Justin Haire scored 2 points.

Lancaster’s stellar guards led the Tigers in scoring with TCU commit Mike Miles scoring 15 points and Wade Taylor adding 13 points.

Lancaster advances to the Regional Tournament at the Culwell Center in Garland on Friday and Saturday.

The Wildcats season ends with a 28-9 record, the third most wins for a Clark Cipoletta-coached Sulphur Springs team. Making it to the Regional Quarterfinal ties the second best finish for Coach Cipoletta, surpassed only by the trip to the State Tournament last season. The Wildcats also lost in the regional quarterfinal game two years ago to Prosper in triple overtime.

It lasted until the bottom of the fifth when Edgewood scored 4 times to go ahead 4-3 after 5 innings. A 7 run Edgewood bottom of the sixth pushed the lead to 11-3, which was how it ended. Edgewood outhit the Panthers 11 to 4. The Panthers had the game’s only error.

Hospital Auction on Hold

Hospital Auction on Hold

The proposed online auction to sell the abandoned ‘Old Hospital’ in Mount Vernon, TX is on hold. Franklin County Judge Scott Lee believes a new solution may be possible.

“It would be great if a private company would come in and get that building back on the tax base,” said Judge Scott, “The need for a full service hospital is just not here. What we really need is an urgent care facility.” In the past, CHRISTUS considered providing such care in Mount Vernon.

Emergency service is currently provided by Hopkins County EMS. Franklin County and Judge Lee feel the arrangement is mutually beneficial. “We contracted with another county before Hopkins County, but Hopkins County is a better fit,” stated Judge Lee.

Recent media exposure about the building, provided by CBS 60 minutes arrival on Thursday March 5th, 2020, has sparked new interest in the site. Mount Vernon ISD was approached in the past about taking over the property. At that time a firm ‘no’ was given. Judge Lee feels the ISD may now be interested. No details on that proposed deal are available.

“We are a small community, and the best case would be getting this property back on the tax rolls, but Franklin County is ready to work with anyone to get his taken care of,” Judge Lee stated.

Before the building is torn down, several hundred thousand dollars of asbestos cleanup will need to be preformed.

Wildcats Soccer Coach Alexi Upton Calls Lindale Win at Home First Complete Game of the Season

To say that Wildcats Soccer Coach Alexi Upton was pleased with the Wildcats 3-0 home win over Lindale at Gerald Prim Stadium Monday night (March 2) would be an understatement. He referred to the win as the first time the Wildcats have played a complete game this season. Coach Upton said the Wildcats played great defense and offense where they put away their scoring chances. He said he is proud of his team. The Wildcats are 6-1 in district play and 12-5-5 for the season. Coach Upton said barring catastrophe, the Wildcats appear to have second place in district locked up. Monday night marked the seventh shutout for the Wildcats goalkeeping duo of Noe Ponce and Eleazar Brena. Coach Upton promises them a treat if they get up to ten. The Wildcats first goal of the game Monday was a blistering shot into the net from 30 yards out from Jose Salazar, his first goal of the season. Kevin Yanez also had a free kick for a goal from about 30 yards away. Alejandro Diasdado also scored a goal after an assist from freshman Uriel Santacruz. Next for the Wildcats is their rematch with Mount Pleasant, the only district team to defeat the Wildcats this season. Coach Upton noted there are still some scenarios where the Wildcats can win the district title if they can top the Tigers Friday night in Mount Pleasant.

  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Stay home when you are sick.
  • Cover your mouth and nose with the inside of your elbow when you cough or sneeze.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.

Below is the letter from Superintendent Michael Lamb to the “Sulphur Springs ISD Family” regarding the topic.

Lady Cats Softball Team Has Better Week Last Week Winning Three and Losing Two

Lady Cats Softball Team Has Better Week Last Week Winning Three and Losing Two

Lady Cats Softball Coach David Carrillo liked last week (February 24-29) better than the week before. He called it a good week and noted his team played well. Coach Carrillo said his whole goal right now is for the team to continue to get better. After a 1-4 week to open the season, the Lady Cats went 3-2 last week. Their season record is now 4-6. Last week the Lady Cats defeated Mineola at home and then went 2-2 in a tough Allen tournament. Coach Carrillo said he noticed the Lady Cats are doing a better job of moving the ball around and are beginning to jell as a group. He said a lot of the tournament games were long, complete games that were a good test for his young team. Next for the Lady Cats is a Wylie tournament. The Lady Cats open Thursday against Allen and McKinney Boyd and then play three more good teams. Again Coach Carrillo said he is looking for his team to get better and he said he is more interested in that than in wins and losses right now. As always, he said his goal is to have the team rocking and rolling by the start in district play. District play begins in three weeks, Coach Carrillo said he currently has 18 players on the varsity roster and he said he continues to evaluate them all. He said he is seeking a good hitting lineup. He said the Lady Cats will have to score runs this year. Coach Carrillo said early season weaknesses of his team have been defensive play at times and not hitting at times.
