Wildcats Soccer Team Has Tough Night in Mount Pleasant as Tigers Get Solid Win at Home
The Wildcats Soccer Team went into Mount Pleasant Friday night, March 6, with a chance to move into a first place tie with the always tough Tigers. However, drama never materialized as Mount Pleasant scored three first half goals and added three more in the second half to take a 6-0 win.
Everyone expected a very close game, especially after the Tigers only scored a 1-0 win at Gerald Prim Stadium back on February 18.
Wildcats Coach Alexi Upton said red cards and injuries cost the Wildcats a lot. He added the Wildcats did not play well. He said missing players did not help. Coach Upton said the loss was a great learning time for the team.
The setback drops the Wildcats to 6-2 in district play, two games behind Mount Pleasant, with 2 district games to play. Next, the Wildcats play at Texas High next Tuesday.

SSISD Trustees Approve School Calendar For 2020-21
Sulphur Springs Independent School District Board of Trustees approved a calendar for the 2020-2021 school year that looks very similar to this year’s school calendar.
Superintendent Michael Lamb told trustees during their lunch meeting Friday, March 6, that the committee that drafted the calendar had discussed potentially changing the number of staff work days held prior to the first day of classes, but ultimately decided to once again recommend 8 days for staff preparation before classes begin.
Two extra teacher days were added in the fall semester to allow teacher to participate in elementary reading training offered during those times. Two days are built in at the end of the 2020-2021 school year as staff preparation days. Teachers did have two days they could use for training either in the summer or March. Those days are now factored into the calendar, with no early release days.

Trustee Craig Roberts said he’s served the last five years on the committee to develop the calendar and can attest, “there’s just not a lot of flexibility” for additional days during the regular calendar year.
New teachers will report for orientation Aug. 3-5, 2020, with all staff reporting for duty Aug. 6-7, Aug. 10-14 and Aug. 17. Staff preparation days for the fall semester are scheduled Sept. 18, Oct. 12 and Oct. 30, 2020. Staff days the spring semester will be Jan. 4-5, Feb. 15, March 15, April 12, May 17 and May 27-28 of 2021. In the event of bad weather days, teachers will make them up on June 1-2, 2021.
Students will report for classes beginning at 8 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 18. The school day for students from pre-kindergarten through fifth grade will end at 3:20 p.m. Middle and high school students’ school day will conclude at 3:30 p.m. The first nine week grading period will end on Oct. 9, the second on Dec. 18, the third on March 5. May 31 had been designated a Memorial Day holiday, which allows students to finish the spring semester on May 26. High school graduation will follow on May 28.
SSISD will no longer have a 4-day weekend for Easter. Good Friday, April 2, 2021, will still be a student holiday, but students won’t have that following Monday off due to a conflict with the testing schedule.
Instead of adding that holiday at another random time to provide a three for four day weekend, students will have Friday, Feb. 26, to allow students and staff to attend and be involved in NETLA’s Hopkins County Junior Market Livestock Show. Teachers had noted a lot of students out of classes on that day, which makes holding classes for the rest of the students difficult. Also, some staff have students who participate in the show, so substitutes have to be found for their classes or other arrangements made for their child.
Friday, Oct. 23 will also still be Fall Festival Day. The idea to remove that day had at one time in the past been considered. However, due to the heavy use of the high school for Fall Festival, that day will remain a holiday.
Additional school holidays for students include Nov. 23-27 for Thanksgiving break, Dec. 21-31 and Jan. 1-5 for Christmas break, Jan. 18 for Martin Luther King Day, March 8-12 for spring break and April 2 for Good Friday.
The calendar received unanimous approval from the school board at Friday’s regular March board meeting, held a few days early due to spring break.
Blogger Nathaneil ‘Nathan’ Narra Jailed in Hopkins County Texas
Blogger Nathaneil ‘Nathan’ Narra was arrested south of Commerce, TX on the afternoon of Friday March 6, 2020. He was transported to Hopkins County Texas and jailed. He faces a felony evading arrest and reckless driving charge.
A Trip To Texas
Narra, a native of Detroit, MI, was seen by a Hopkins County Sheriff’s Deputy traveling Interstate-30 west bound near Sulphur Springs, TX. The deputy reported Narra’s speed in excess of 90 mph.
Narra attempted to out-run and lose the deputy by exiting Interstate-30 at Texas State Highway 50. With law enforcement vehicles in pursuit, Narra sped north on 50 toward Commerce, TX. Hopkins County Dispatch Services contacted Commerce Police and warned them of the approaching high speed pursuit.

Before reaching Commerce, TX, Narra turned his car around in an attempt to travel back to I-30. During this direction change his Silver Camaro made contact with another vehicle. Narra was able to drive only a few miles south on 50 before a tire failed. He eventually stopped his vehicle, surrendered and was taken into custody without further incident.
Narra’s Online Past
A brief search of Narra’s public social media account provided a few minutes of entertainment. Narra apparently fancies himself an internet celebrity and is attempting to make a living posting his life and adventures on various social media platforms. This sharing includes an apparent car wreck in 2018 posted to Instagram.

Several videos posted to Narra’s public YouTube account detail the process of purchasing the Silver Camaro used in his trip to Texas. In a rambling collection of posturing, pontificating and outright manipulation of his family members, Narra repeats ad nauseam how he is only 18, and now he owns both a Camaro and a Jaguar. He also feels it necessary to give life and financial advice. He explains that saving money is not cool and in a ‘YOLO’ themed moment rails against being surrounded by paper money.
Our hearts go out to his mother who is captured on Narra’s videos providing a required co-sign to secure the car deal.
Other posts give insight into the purchase and modification of the Silver Camaro. Narra explains why he chooses to wait on ‘tuning’ the Chevrolet… Truly something did ‘blow up’ on his trip to Texas.
Bond was set Saturday at $15,000 for the felony charge of Evading Arrest with a Vehicle, and $2,500 for Reckless Driving.

He said some solid performances occurred. Lady Cats Coach Ross Hicks said the Lady Cats also faced two district foes, Royse City and Greenville along with other strong teams from Class 4A to 6A.
For the Wildcats, Coach Young said Ryan Hammons took second in the shot put with a throw in the high 46 feet range while Raydon McCormack was fourth. He said Fields and Lacy both had faster times in the race than they did in the prior meet. In the 1600-meter run, Jose Mejia was fifth and Christian Palomino sixth. The Wildcats 4×400-meter relay team of Torres, Ramirez, Kyle Snell and Palomino placed third

Sable Erdmier Qualifies as First Sulphur Springs’ Girl to Go to State Powerlifting Meet at Regional Meet Thursday
Two Lady Cats’ pioneers in the sport of powerlifting competed at the Girls Regional Meet Thursday in Pine Tree. Addy Lamb, the first SSHS female powerlifter last year, and Sable Erdmier, who soon joined Addy last year, both qualified for the regional meet this year.
Erdmier, a senior, lifting in the 165-pound class, finished second sending her to the Girls State Meet March 21 in Waco. She becomes the first Sulphur Springs girl lifter to go to State. Erdmier came into the Regional Meet ranked #2 in the region. Sulphur Springs Powerlifting Coach Casey Jeter said competition is fierce in the 165-pound class and three girls, instead of the usual two, qualified for State. Thursday Erdmier set a personal record in the squat with a 340 pound lift. She just missed in an attempt to match the state record in squat at 370 pounds. Erdmier had a 135 pound bench press. She was almost successful trying a 145 pound lift. Erdmier did a 350 pound dead lift.
Lamb, in the 132 pound weight class, came in ranked sixth in the region. She ended up tied for fourth but was dropped to fifth because she weighed one pound more than the other fourth place finisher. Lamb, a sophomore, set a personal record in squat with a lift of 270 pounds. She bench pressed 95 pounds and dead lifted 255 pounds to jump into the fourth place tie.
