PARIS – Motorists who frequently travel on US 69 in Rains County near Emory, Texas, should be on the alert for road construction beginning Feb. 23.

That is the date for contractor DL Lennon to begin rehabilitating a portion of that roadway. The work will extend from just north of the intersection of US 69 and FM 3299 southward to the intersection of FM 515 and US 69. The contractor should be able to complete this work in 159 working days, at an estimated cost of more than $4.6 million.

The contractor will perform spot repairs on the roadway base, replace or add safety treatments to parallel drainage structures, widen the existing pavement with a cement-treated base, and install a hot mix pavement overlay. Crews will also extend or add safety treatments to existing cross drainage structures.

TxDOT officials ask motorists and other travelers to drive to existing road conditions, obey all traffic controls, and be prepared for some short delays while this work is underway.

In a short period of time, the old city of Sulphur Springs swimming pool will be no more. Already the slide is gone. City Manager Marc Maxwell says the fence will be coming down soon so equipment can move in to demolish the pool. Very high liability insurance rates and maintenance issues caused the pool to lie dormant for several years now. Maxwell says city staff is considering spray parks for city parks. I talked about the pool with City Manager Marc Maxwell Wednesday morning.

Steve and Carrie Nuckolls purchased the store from Holly and Brad Massey about a year ago. They started on an upgrade path which has resulted in both store fronts being replaced. The entrance on Gilmer street is finished and now open while the front is being rebuilt. They said that they hope the front will be finished in a couple of months. In the meantime it is business as usual. The inside and inventory are top notch which you would expect from a store named “Everything Unique.”

Texas Forestry Association to Give Away Seedlings in Austin

Posted by on 6:00 pm in Headlines | Comments Off on Texas Forestry Association to Give Away Seedlings in Austin

LUFKIN, TEXAS – The public is invited to join Texas Forestry Association as the trade association gives away thousands of hardwood seedlings on Tuesday, Feb. 24, 2015, from 8:30 am to noon, or while supplies last, at the William B Travis Building at 1701 N Congress Ave in Austin, Texas.

Seedlings available for the public will include Eastern Red Oak, Southern Crabapple, Bald Cypress, Bur Oak, Chinkapin Oak, Live Oak, Shumard Oak, Pecan and Black Walnut.

Texas Forestry Association’s membership began the program to increase public awareness of the tree planting efforts which take place each winter in the forested regions of the state. This will be the 13th legislative session in which Texas Forestry Association will deliver the forestry message to Austin residents by distributing the seedlings.

“With nearly 12 million acres of commercial forest land, the forests of East Texas provide a total economic impact of more than $30.3 billion, up $3 billion from just two years ago, making timber a valuable agricultural commodity statewide,” said Ron Hufford, Executive Vice President of Texas Forestry Association. “The number of jobs generated by the forests has also risen, with more than 130,000 jobs for Texans, and the timber industry manufactures more than 5,000 products we enjoy every day.”

Each year, approximately 100 million seedlings are planted in Texas. “This illustrates the desire of private landowners and the Texas Forest Sector to maintain sustainable forests for future generations,” Hufford said.

ArborGen’s Richard O. Barham Nursery near Bullard, Texas is providing the seedlings for the giveaway.
