Anti-Drone Tech Coming to Texas Ahead of FIFA
May 13, 2026 – The Texas Department of Public Safety is ramping up security efforts ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, announcing a $3.2 million investment in advanced drone mitigation technology. The funding, secured through a grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, will support the deployment of counter-unmanned aircraft systems (C-UAS) designed to detect, track, and neutralize unauthorized drones.
Officials say the move comes as concerns grow nationwide over the potential misuse of drones in crowded, high-profile events. Texas is expected to host multiple World Cup matches, drawing large international crowds and increasing the need for layered security measures.
The new systems will give DPS the ability to identify drone activity in real time, assess potential threats, and take action when necessary. Capabilities include radio frequency detection, drone tracking, and in some cases mitigation tools that can disrupt or disable unauthorized aircraft. Authorities emphasize that these systems are intended to enhance public safety while operating within federal guidelines governing airspace and drone use.
DPS leaders describe the investment as proactive rather than reactive. “Major events like the World Cup require us to stay ahead of evolving threats,” an agency spokesperson said. “This technology ensures we can respond quickly and effectively to unauthorized drone activity.”
The grant is part of a broader federal effort to help state and local agencies strengthen security infrastructure ahead of globally significant events. Coordination between DPS, local law enforcement, and federal partners is expected to increase as the tournament approaches.
With drone usage continuing to rise for both recreational and commercial purposes, officials are also urging the public to follow all flight regulations. Unauthorized drone operations near stadiums or large gatherings could result in penalties, especially during heightened security periods tied to international events like the World Cup.
