Scenes From Memorial Day Ceremony on Celebration Plaza
Skies were cloudy but didn’t deter the crowd of participants at the May 30 “Honor Our Veterans” Memorial Day observance in downtown Sulphur Springs. Mrs. Darlene Stanford, Executive Director of Kindred Hospice in Greenville was the organizer. She has a soft place in her heart for Veterans, especially the elderly who served during their lifetime. Mrs. Stanford arranged for a brief but moving commemoration of the meaning of Memorial Day (Remembrance Day, Decoration Day) and utilized Hopkins County leaders for the formalities. Gas Prices Increase Locally and Nationally
Local gas prices have increased during the past four weeks following a national trend. Memorial Day weekend marks the beginning of summer roadtrips and vacation time for many. In Texas driving distances is as natural as breathing. Americans drove 273.4 billion miles in March. That’s up 5% from the same month last year. A total of 746 billon miles have been driven in the first 3 months of this year. As of Friday, gas prices across the nation averaged $2.33 per gallon. This is the highest price average since the summer of 2009. The average price per gallon increased nearly 25-cents in the last four weeks.
The primary cause of the increase is due to a rise in crude oil prices thanks in part to a weaker U S dollar. West Texas Intermediate crude ended trading Friday at $39.44 per barrel. Even with more miles driven in the past two years, thanks to milder winter and other factors, the supply of gasoline seems ready for an upward surge in driving. U S gasoline usage has fallen due to rising fuel efficiency standards in vehicles.
Gas prices in Sulphur Springs, Como and Birthright are found to range between $2.09 and $2.15 per gallon at local pumps. In Cumby, gas is $2.19 and between $2.17 and $2.29 in Cooper. Commerce and Winnsboro prices are at $2.19 per gallon.

Walgreens Implements Programs to Fight Prescription Drug Abuse

by Allison Bledsoe
Walgreens is leading the fight against a rising epidemic in the United States: prescription drug abuse. The retailer will install medication disposal kiosks in 500 drugstores in 39 states and Washington, D.C., including Texas. The program will make the disposal of medications, including opiods and other controlled substances, easier and safer while helping to reduce the misuse of medications and the rise in drug overdoses.
Along with installing the kiosks, Walgreens is also making Naxolone available without a prescription in 35 states, including Texas. Naloxone is an antidote, used to treat narcotic overdoses in emergency situations. Naloxone blocks or reverses the effects of narcotic medications, including extreme drowsiness, slowed breathing, or loss of consciousness. The medicine is used in emergency situations, but does not replace the need for medical attention that is necessary after a person has overdosed. Naxolone is injected into a muscle, under the skin, or into a vein through an IV. The injection may be given by a healthcare provider, emergency medical provider, or a family member or caregiver who is trained to properly give a Naloxone injection.
Most people who misuse prescription drugs first obtain them from a family member or friend, often from a home medicine cabinet. Prescription drug abuse is rampant among American teens, and the first step to stopping prescription drug abuse is to prevent it from happening. The Drug Enforcement Administration urges parents and grandparents to watch closely over their prescription medications and speak to their children about medicinal abuse.
The programs are being implemented on a state-by-state basis and are projected to be finished by the end of 2016.
