Winnsboro Police Report October 24-30
Winnsboro Police made four arrests, answered 168 calls for service, and issued 50 citations and 48 warnings during the October 24-30, 2016 report period.
Arrested were:
Torie Bradley, 29, of Tyler, on October 28th on a Smith County Warrant
Jason Goines, 35, of Winnsboro on October 29th on a Gregg County Warrant
James Rockwell, 42, of Plano on October 29th on three Collin County Warrants
Daniel Wetzel, 21, of Winnsboro on October 29th for Franklin and Hopkins County Warrants.
“Updated” Second Arrest Made in Sunday Night Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon

Tuesday morning Sulphur Springs Police made a second arrest related to a disturbance in the 400 block of Van Sickle Street Sunday night. Charlie James Williams, 30, brother of Lucas Wayne Williams, 24, is in Hopkins County Jail. Lucas Williams is currently held on two counts of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon. Charlie Williams is being charged with one count of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon.
Lucas Williams is being held on a total of $150,000 bond. Charlie James Williams is being held on $75,000 bond.
Sunday around 11 p.m. Sulphur Springs Police and Hopkins County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a call the 400 block of Van Sickle Street. There they found one individual with a laceration above the left eye and the second victim had a stab wound. Both victims were transported to CHRISTUS Mother Francis Sulphur Springs Emergency Room for treatment. The individual with the laceration stated he had been hit with a baseball bat.

Investigation Continues into Saturday Double Stabbing
The investigation continues into the cause of a double stabbing early Saturday morning that resulted in two brothers being flown to medical hospitals in two separate cities and the suspect walking a couple of blocks to the Hopkins County Sheriff’s Office to surrender to custody. Lead Investigator David Gilmore told KSST news that he is awaiting an opportunity to interview the two victims who remain in the hospitals. Both are improving.
Saturday, Sulphur Springs Police were called to apartments at 512 Church Street in reference to a disturbance. There they found a 16-year old male and a 21 year old male, brothers, stabbed by another subject. The suspect in the incident is Meldrick Roland. Roland is in custody at this time. He was also wanted on several warrants by local police.
No charges have been filed against Roland at this time. He was held in Hopkins County Jail held on misdemeanor warrants but has made bond.
Early Voting Open 7 a.m. Until 7 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday
Early voting is open 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday of this week. Wednesday and Friday the early voting place at 128 Jefferson Street in Sulphur Springs will be open 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. Although Saturday and Sunday saw a light voter turnout, 541 cast ballots on Monday, October 31.
Sample ballots are found on the Hopkins County website. Parking at the new Jefferson Street Parking lot, accessed off Rosemont Street, is being used by many voters.

County Schools Qualify for State at Regional Cross Country
Once again Hopkins County showed its’ strength in cross country at the regional meet Saturday at Lynn Creek Park in Grand Prairie.
In boys Class 1A, Saltillo was first in the region. Miller Grove was second and Sulphur Bluff fourth. Saltillo was paced by Dakota Patridge in fifth place. Lyle Bench was 6th, ,Walker McGill 9th, Branson McGill 11th, Adam Valenzuela 13th, Trevor Moore 19th and Hendrick Rios 22nd. Miller Grove was led by a 1-2 finish in regional from Albert Serrano and Luke Brignon. Other Hornets going to state are Grant Earp, Jake Pelerose, Grant Sharp and Trent Wolfe. Sulphur Bluff runners heading to state are Johnathan Brown, Brennon Seymore, Trayton South, Turner South, Ricky Taylor-Hatfield, Ishmeal Wade and Jacob Watts. In Class 2a, Javier Rojo qualfied for state.
In girls, Miller Grove was first in the region. Their state bound team includes Aleigh Bessonett who was fourth, Candace Earp, Alexis Green, Ashley Purser, Rosa Schones, Cassidy Seaney who was third and Alex Ziegler. The Saltillo girls were third in the region. Sienna Collins finished first in the region. Others on the team are Brenda Castro, Melisa Groenwald, Jocelyn Ochoa, Madison Simmons and Melisa Tawil. Maddie Hooker of Yantis who finished fifth in regional also qualified for state.
New Traffic Flow at Highway 19/I-30 Overpass Begins November 3rd
PARIS – Texas Department of Transportation officials today announced that changes are in store for the overpass at the intersection of Interstate Highway 30 and State Highways 19 and 11.
The overpass is currently two-lane; with a center left-turn lane and traffic signals at each end of the overpass to control traffic flow onto SH 19, SH 11 and frontage roads.
Beginning Nov. 3, the overpass will carry four lanes of traffic, two in each direction, without traffic signals at each end of the overpass. Dedicated right-turn lanes will provide access to SH 19 or SH 11 and frontage roads, officials said.
Vehicles on the I-30 east-bound or west-bound service roads will be guided to SH 19 or SH 11 by traffic signs. The new traffic flow configuration is designed to reduce congestion at this highway interchange, TxDOT officials said.
The existing traffic signals will be programmed to function as flashing yellow lights for about 90 days following the change, but will be removed in the future.
TxDOT officials advised drivers to reduce their speed and obey all traffic controls as they approach and travel through work zones, and to avoid distracted driving.

Hopkins County Sheriff’s Posse 29th Anniversary
Originally the idea of Highway Patrolman Roger ‘Tex’ Maynard and the late Deputy Ken Wisdom, a number of local ranchers, horsemen and members of law enforcement met with Sheriff Mark Bassham for the organization of the first Hopkins County Sheriff’s Posse. Cletis Millsap prepared a squirrel stew to feed those who attended the formation event in the Aiguire Cemetery on October 31, 1987. Over the 29 year history of the mounted organization, posse members have assisted in manhunts, searches, patrols, security, parades and many other Sheriff’s Department needs, serving at no cost to the taxpayer. On October 28, 2016, Sheriff Butch Adams and Sheriff-elect Lewis Tatum hosted an Anniversary/Fellowship meeting for current and former posse members and their spouses. Chicken stew and homemade desserts were served, a collection of Texas law enforcement badges was presented to the department by Jerry Gillispie, and Tex Maynard, Earl Martin and Ronnie Glossup regaled the crowd with stories about posse assignments and horseback adventures.
Early Vote Light Over Weekend; Continues This Week
A light voter turnout over the weekend brings early vote total to 4,830 for the first seven days. Saturday saw 446 and Sunday recorded 223 early votes cast. Early voting continues through the end of the week.

“Updated” Baseball Bat Used in Aggravated Assault Sunday
Sunday night around 11 p.m. Sulphur Springs Police and Hopkins County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a call in the street in near Easy Street Apartments on the 400 block of Van Sickle Street. There they found one individual with a laceration above the left eye and the second victim had a stab wound. Both victims were transported to CHRISTUS Mother Francis Sulphur Springs Emergency Room for treatment.
The individual with the laceration stated he had been hit with a baseball bat. An eyewitness concurred and stated that Lucas Wayne Williams, 24, of Sulphur Springs had committed the assault. A second suspect is also being sought.
Williams is in Hopkins County Jail being held on two counts of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon. His bond is set at $75,000 for each count.
According to Police Chief Jay Sanders the victims were released from the local hospital.
