Saltillo Hosted Cross Country at Bob Sandlin State Park
The Saltillo Lions finished second and the Lady Lions third at the Saltillo hosted Brookshire’s Challenge Cross Country Meet at Lake Bob Sandlin State Park last Thursday.
Other area boys team finishers included Sulphur Bluff fifth, North Hopkins sixth, Como-Pickton tenth and Yantis eleventh. Among boys, Saltillo’s Dakota Patridge finished fifrth, Turner South of Sulphur Bluff was eighth, the Lions’ Walker McGill was ninth and Lyle Bench was tenth.
Other area team finishers in the girls’ run included Como-Pickton fifth, North Hopkins ninth, Yantis tenth and Sulphur Bluff fifteenth. Sienna Collins of Saltillo was second in the girls’ race.

Commissioners’ Court Approves Two Proclamations
Monday morning in Hopkins County Commissioners’ Court, two proclamations were read. One Proclamation named this week, Fire Prevention Safety Week, the second proclaimed October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Sunday, members of the Hopkins County Marine Corp League lowered the flags to half-staff at 9 a.m. to commemorate the day honoring those fallen in service as firefighters.
In His proclamation, County Judge Robert Newsom stated that since 1922 Fire Prevention Week is observed to remind the public of the importance of fire prevention and in remembrance of the great Chicago Fire. It is a reminder that smoke detectors are a vital part of fire prevention in the home.
Domestic Violence Awareness Month is the focus of Safe-T, a Northeast Texas program that provides services to domestic violence survivors and sexual assault victims in an eight county area. Those services include crisis hotline, shelter, housing assistance, counseling, support groups, and rape-crisis intervention. Safe-T has provided 320 individuals in Hopkins county with services and 1,548 individuals area wide.

Mt Vernon Man Arrested for Drug Possession in Hopkins County
A traffic stop by Hopkins County Sheriff’s deputy near Auto Zone in Sulphur Springs led to the arrest of Adrian Lopez Ontiveros, Jr., 21, of Mt Vernon. Detecting the odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle led to a probable cause search. A clear plastic bag containing 1.5 oz of marijuana and a metal screw top container containing 14.4-gram of white powdery substance was identified as cocaine by Lopez Ontiveros.
He is in Hopkins County Jail held on a $40,000 bond for possession of a controlled substance penalty group 1 over 4-grams but under 200-grams; a $5,000 Possession of Marijuana under 2 oz, and bail jumping and failure to appear in Franklin County, $5,000.
Cumby Man Arrested in Theft
Sunday afternoon a man called Cumby police to report a number of items taken from his home. The man believed his son had taken them while he was away on a trip.
The officer made contact with the son, Clayton Ryan Hanson, 19, who told the Cumby officer that the vehicle he was in contained illegal contraband inside the lockbox. The officer found multiple marijuana grinders and a small plastic bag containing a white crushed substance that tested to be methamphetamine. Hanson also admitted to taking the property.
Hanson is in Hopkins County Jail charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance under 1-gram and Theft of Property over $750 but under $2500.
*Updated* Double Fatality in Monday Morning Accident
At approximately 6:45 a.m. Monday morning a southbound Ford Mustang crossed into the northbound lane of State Highway 19N striking a North Hopkins Co-op Education bus. Both drivers died as a result of the accident. A female passenger, a teacher’s aide, was on the bus. She was transported to the local hospital and is good condition.
Justice of the Peace Brad Cummings has ordered an autopsy on both bodies. DPS is investigating the accident. The deceased are Larry Resendiz 33 of Como, and Perry Evans 52 of Sulphur Springs, TX.

Help-A-Child Benefit Kicks Off Saturday Morning

Saturday morning was busy, busy, busy for those involved with the annual Help-A-Child Benefit! Chili and dutch oven cobbler cooks were at work early this morning and ready to feed the crowds around 11 am. Lake Country Antique Tractor Association kicked off their tractor pulling around 9 am and were still going steady around noon. FFA projects were ready to be auctioned off and many were anticipating the Stone Groove Band featuring Queen Sadie Evans at 5 pm!
Lady Cats Aggressive in 3-1 Win at Texas High
The Lady Cats’ volleyball team played an aggressive game with a lot of solid attacks Friday as they took a 3-1 win at Texas High. The match featured two teams that were tied for second place in the district. The Lady Cats are now all alone there with a 6-2 district record. They are 27-9 for the season.
The score Friday was 25-16, 25-22, 21-25 and 25-18. Sheretta Hill led the Lady Cats with 13 kills while Autumn Tanton added 10, Abbi Baier 8, Kaylee Jefferson 7 and Mieke VanBenthem 5. Tori Moore provided 34 assists. Anden Hammack and Jefferson both had 14 digs each and Moore added 8. Tanton and VanBenthem had two block solos and Hill added one. The team recorded 16 block assists.
Lady Cats Volleyball Coach Justin Maness said the team’s net play offensively and defensively was strong. He said the team let one set get away from them but then he said they quickly rebounded. Coach Maness said Hill had two of her best hits of the season in set 4 adding that both were solid bangs in front of the 10 foot line. He concluded by saying Texas High is a tough place to play but added that it was nice to get a win on the road.
The Lady Cats play at Greenville Tuesday night.
