Santa For Seniors Blankets Collected and Distributed

SantaforSeniorsA cold damp night reminded Hopkins County residents that needy senior citizens in Hopkins County need new blankets. Many responded with blankets and cash donations for Santa for Seniors, the new blanket drive sponsored by the Sulphur Springs Corvette Club and the Senior Citizens Center. Local residents of all ages brought blankets and donations to Celebration Plaza at the corner of Main Street and Gilmer Street. One hundred twenty (120) blankets were collected during the drive and have been distributed by the Senior Citizens Center.

Members of the Corvette Club huddled around portable heaters taking turns in receiving the donations. Although James “Red” Cross manned the Gilmer Street side of the intersection both Wednesday and Thursday nights. He delighted those driving by with his humor as he visited with the many that the Hopkins County native knew by name.

Karon Weatherman, Director of the Senior Center, stated that the success of the program last year has assisted in promoting the work again this year. All the blankets donated last year were placed in the hands of those in need and the blankets received this year will also be put to good use for those in need.

TxDOT Specialist Seeks to Improve Experience for Senior Adult Drivers

TxDOT Specialist Seeks to Improve Experience for Senior Adult Drivers

PARIS – Senior drivers in Northeast Texas can have a trained TxDOT specialist check their automobiles for comfort, safety and mobility to help improve their daily driving experiences.

These checks are part of the national CarFit program developed by the American Automobile Association (AAA), American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) and the American Occupational Therapy Association. They are designed to provide a quick, comprehensive check on how a mature driver and their vehicle work together.

“CarFit is now part of our safety program,” said Monica Freeman, TxDOT traffic safety specialist and a certified CarFit technician. “As we age, changes in our vision, flexibility and strength, range of motion, and even our size and height can make us less comfortable and capable behind the wheel.”

“A free CarFit check helps the driver understand and use the safety features of their vehicle. We complete a 12-point checklist with drivers. Some of the things we check are the correct position of the driver’s seat, the driver’s ability to easily reach the pedals, and how to properly adjust and set the mirrors.”

Drivers who safely fit their car are better able to deal with stressful driving conditions such as traffic congestion, long travel distances, and new technology, Freeman said. She conducts CarFit checks at the Paris District office at 1365 N. Main Street in Paris. Interested motorists can contact her at (903) 737-9292 or email [email protected] to schedule a CarFit check.

Senior drivers can also check their local AAA club or AARP office to take driver safety refresher courses or look into occupational therapy driving evaluation programs that provide individual driving assessments. CarFit is an extension of these classroom programs that helps mature drivers ensure their personal vehicles are adjusted to their needs.

Workshop Fire in Emblem Sends 15 Firemen to ER for Tests

Workshop Fire in Emblem Sends 15 Firemen to ER for Tests

Fifteen Hopkins County firefighters and volunteer firefighters were at CHRISTUS Mother Francis Sulphur Springs Hospital Emergency Room following a structure fire on FM 71 in the Emblem Community Wednesday. The ER tested each firefighter after it was discovered that a 55-gallon drum of formaldehyde had been leaking in the workshop where the fire occurred, according to Andy Endsley, Hopkins County Fire Chief.

Firemen from Hopkins County Fire Department and volunteers from North Hopkins and Cumby responded to the fire when a structure attached to a hay barn was found to be on fire. Other volunteer organizations were responding but were called off when it became apparent the barn was not in danger.

The property was being rented but the workshop was being used by the owner of the property. In the workshop the formaldehyde barrel had been pierced by a 22-caliber bullet causing the leaking of the formaldehyde. Concerns of formaldehyde laced smoke  inhalation necessitated the trip to the Emergency Room. The owner of the property will be responsible for the haz-mat cleanup of the area. The formaldehyde had not only leaked in the workshop but also along the route taken by the renters who knew of the barrel in the workshop. They had removed the barrel from the workshop when the fire developed.
