PJC Offering a Summer Class’ Free Tuition to High School Graduating Seniors

Graduating high school seniors are again receiving a great deal from Paris Junior College this summer — a scholarship covering tuition for one class in either Summer I or Summer II semesters.

The summer tuition scholarship is available to those graduating from high schools in the PJC service area in Delta, Fannin, Lamar, Hunt, Hopkins and Red River counties. It allows students to take either a core academic class to transfer and save money, or a workforce class that can lead to a great career.

“Our donors understand that PJC offers a great education with small class sizes and personalized attention from experienced instructors, “ said PJC President Dr. Pam Anglin. “PJC students receive excellent grounding in the basics and often have a better understanding of subject matters than can be found in students who started as freshmen at four-year schools.”

To help students succeed starting in the fall, PJC has again been allocated $1 million in scholarship funds from the Paris Junior College Memorial Foundation for 2017-18 academic year scholarships. Awards are already being made, so students should apply for those funds as soon as possible.

The link to the scholarship application may be found by going to http://www.parisjc.edu/scholarships. High school seniors wanting the summer class scholarship should enter “graduating senior 2017” in the scholarship application box that asks for “semester/year to attend PJC.”

Early registration is going on now for summer at all three campuses. For questions or more information contact Amie Cato at 903-782-0431 or [email protected] or Sheila Reece at 903-782-0211 or [email protected].

Flynn’s House Bill 45, American Law in American Courts, Voted Out of Committee

Flynn’s House Bill 45, American Law in American Courts, Voted Out of Committee
AUSTIN–The House Judiciary and Civil Jurisprudence Committee voted Representative Dan Flynn’s (R-Van) American Law in American Courts bill out of committee Tuesday. Representative Flynn introduced bills in the last three legislative sessions to address the foreign law issue.  Foreign law is often applied in Texas cases concerning foreign divorce orders, child support and property settlements. In addition, sometimes spouses enter into agreements to have foreign law applied to their disputes.

“My colleagues and I here at the Texas Legislature want to make sure Texas judges never apply foreign law in Texas courts in violation of constitutional rights and the public policy of our state,” Representative Flynn stated.  “It is an issue that has the ability to affect the core values of Texas and American Law.”

In June, 2015, Attorney General Ken Paxton issued opinion KP-0094 at Representative Flynn’s request, stating that Texas law already prohibits violations of constitutional rights and public policy when foreign law is applied.  Representative Flynn gave the Attorney General 19 scenarios that cover the family law landscape to which the Attorney General opined that Texas law already prohibits such violations.
Therefore, no changes in substantive law are needed but additional rules of evidence and procedure might aid the courts and litigants in fully and uniformly applying the current law. The bill provides that a number of current federal and state statutes that establish procedures to protect against violations of constitutional rights and public policy will prevail in the event of a conflict with the Court’s rules.
“New legislation would not become effective until September, 2017. There must be limits on judges when foreign law comes into their courts,” Representative Flynn said.  “I want to make sure judges know today what the law is as this is in an issue that affects the entire State of Texas.”

Game Day Bye for Lady Cats and Wildcats

With a seven team district, one school has to have a bye twice with first round and second round play. The Wildcats’ baseball team and the Lady Cats’ softball team have their second round bye Tuesday while the other six district teams are in action. Both the Wildcats and Lady Cats are gearing up for down the stretch action in district play.

The Wildcats are currently tied for first with Hallsville. Both have only one district loss. After the bye, the Wildcats will travel to Mt. Pleasant Friday night at 7 p.m. They will complete district play next week with a Tuesday senior night game at Eagle Stadium against Greenville and then a game that might decide first place Friday at 7 p.m. at Hallsville. The Wildcats are 8-1 in district play and 14-6-1 for the season.

After their bye, the Lady Cats’ softball team only has one game left on the schedule but it could be a very big one. Going into play Tuesday night, Texas High has only one district loss and the Lady Cats and Mt. Pleasant both have two. Possibilities for the Lady Cats include finishes of either first place, second place or third place. What make matters more intriguing, Mt. Pleasant and Texas High play Tuesday night.

Both the Wildcats and the Lady Cats know they are playoff bound, they just are not sure where they will finish right now. It will be determined down the stretch.
