Wildcat Track Finishes Fourth at Lindale
The Wildcats’ track team finished fourth at a Lindale meet Thursday. The Wildcats JV placed second. Wildcats Track Coach Matt Young said the meet featured Hallsville, Jacksonville, Pittsburg, Wills Point and Lindale.
In field events, Josh Thompson won the discus with a throw of 125 feet. D.J Hall was second with a toss of 120-feet. Ian Blanch was third in shot put. In triple jump, Tiesan Goodson with fourth with a total of 41 feet.
In the 3200-meter run, Landon Thornton was fourth and Peyton Vickery sixth. Eli Sellers placed fourth in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:09. In the 110-meter hurdles, Terrell Turman was second with Landry Tyson third. In the 100-meter dash, Ryan Humphries was second with a time of 11.2 seconds. The Wildcats 4 X 200-meter relay team placed. The team members are Goodson, Turman, Damiyon Dugan and Lawrence Worth.
In the 300-meter hurdles, Humphries finished a close second. Mason Buck, running in his first high school track meet, was third. Tyson was fourth. In the 1600-meter run, Vickery was second and Thornton placed. The Wildcats 4 X 400-meter relay team was fourth. That relay is made up of Nabian Ramirez, Tyson, Michael Jefferson and Humphries.
Coach Young said he likes how the Wildcats are competing. The Wildcats’ next meet takes place next Friday at Mt. Pleasant.
Lady Trojans 3-3 in District Following Fannindel Win
The Cumby Lady Trojans’ softball team improved their district record to 3-3 with a solid 27-8 win at Fannindel Thursday.
Paige Seely got the pitching win for Cumby going an inning and a third with 3 strikeouts and 4 walks. Bailey Busby and Carly Talley also pitched.
The Lady Trojans had three inside the park home runs. Alyssa Morgan, Busby and Alysse Bullock had one each. Morgan was 3 for 5 with three RBI’s. Busby was 3 for 3 with a triple and 4 RBI’s. Bullock was 2 for 3 with a double and 2 RBI’s. Abby Baxter drove home a run with a beautiful bunt on a suicide squeeze play. She was 2 for 3. Seely walked three times. Sydney Spillers was 3 for 4 with 2 doubles and 3 RBI’s. Laura Rector had 2 singles. Rosalyne Owens got an RBI as she took a bases loaded walk.
The Lady Trojans play Campbell in Cumby Friday at 4:30 p.m.
Wood County Sheriff’s Report March 15-21, 2017
March 15th
At 12:52 a.m., a donkey was reported out on Highway 80/FM 2422.
A deputy initiated a traffic stop at 2:58 a.m. on Highway 37, north of CR 2303. The driver, Mark Christopher Phillips, 44, of Mineola was arrested for Driving While License Invalid without Financial Responsibility.
At 4:03 a.m., cows were reported out on Highway 154/CR 3230.
At 5:03 a.m., cows were reported out on CR 1843/FM 2966 in Yantis.
At 6:48 a.m., cows were reported out on FM 2966/CR 1843.
At 2:49 a.m., cows were reported out on FM 49 in Mineola.
Deputies received a call from a citizen at 4:10 p.m., reporting a scam telephone call. The reporting party stated that she was called by someone named John Duncan from UPS Claimed/Unclaimed Department claiming that, if she sent a $395. money gram to an address in New York, she would receive $500,000 and a new car. Sheriff Castloo advises to be very wary of phone calls or e-mails from unknown parties requesting money. You should contact the Sheriff’s Office if you have questions regarding a scam phone call or e-mail.
Deputies received a call at 4:20 p.m. from a citizen reporting that an unknown person siphoned approximately 20 gallons of gasoline out of his vehicle’s gas tank worth $40.00. The vehicle was located on CR 1784 in Yantis.
At 8:37 p.m., cows were reported out on FM 2869, 2 miles north of 2088.
At 8:39 p.m., horses were reported out on Highway 80/CR 2667.
March 16th
At 3:55 a.m., a deputy on routine patrol discovered an unoccupied vehicle with the headlights on and the key in the ignition on Highway 80 and CR 3836. The deputy located the driver, Robert Anthony Mendoza, 31, of Tyler nearby and arrested him for Public Intoxication.
At 4:18 a.m., cows were reported out on FM 2088, 1 mile west of CR 3130 in Quitman.
Deputies were dispatched to CR 3540 in Hawkins at 3:08 p.m. on an assault call. The victim stated that a person known to her came to her residence and began to hit and choke her. The subject left quickly and she then contacted the Sheriff’s Office. Deputies searched for the suspect, but were unable to locate him. Investigators will follow up on the case.
Deputies were dispatched at 3:20 p.m. to a burglary of a vehicle call. The reporting party stated that he ran out of gas and had to leave his vehicle at FM 17 and FM 49. When he returned, an unknown person had broken into his vehicle and stolen the radio and a wallet out of it. The investigation is ongoing.
At 7:09 p.m., cows were reported out on FM 2966/CR 1843.
March 17th
At 4:15 a.m., cows were reported out on CR 4252.
At 8:31 a.m., cows were reported out on CR 4186 in Quitman.
Wood County Sheriff Tom Castloo advised that the Wood County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division has been working around the clock on solving multiple burglaries, theft of property and recovering stolen property since January. On March 17th, investigators from the Wood County Sheriff’s Office, Chief Deputy Bobby Sanders and Sheriff Tom Castloo, along with Camp County Sheriff Alan McCandless went to CR 2174 in Quitman and recovered approximately $30,000.00 in stolen property. During the investigation, the Wood County Sheriff’s Office was able to clear up multiple criminal cases that included Burglary of a Habitation; Burglary of a Building; Engaging in Organized Criminal Activity; Theft of Property and manufacture Delivery of a Controlled Substance.
While at the location, deputies arrested Allen Farris, 53, of Quitman on an unrelated charge of Possession of a Controlled Substance. A white female was also arrested on outstanding traffic warrants. Further information will be released at a later date as investigators are still conducting the investigation and further arrests are possible.
At 7:39 p.m., cows were reported out on FM 2966/Coffee Creek.
March 18th
At 12:44 a.m., cows were reported out on FM 2966/CR 1843 in Yantis.
At 5:48 a.m., horses were reported out on FM 312, near CR 4760 in Winnsboro.
Deputies were dispatched to CR 2260 in Mineola at 8:55 a.m., on a burglary of a building call. The complainant stated that an unknown person had broken into his barn and stole several items. The case has been forwarded to investigators to follow-up.
Deputies were dispatched to a call at 9:12 a.m. on E. Highway 154 in Quitman on a possible burglary in progress call. When the deputies arrived at the location, the complainant stated that there were several men inside of her house who had tied her up, along with her friend and were stealing her belongings. She stated that she had escaped, but her friend was still tied up. The deputies searched the house and found no evidence of any burglary or anyone tied up. The complainant, Patricia Burrow, 59 of Quitman was arrested for Public Intoxication and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.
Deputies were dispatched to CR 2175 at 10:10 a.m. in regards to an assault. The complainant stated that a person known to her came into the residence and began assaulting her. A 3rd party, who had been in another room, came into the room and broke up the fight and the suspect left the residence. The investigation is continuing.
At 1:19 p.m., horses were reported out on Highway 37/4186 in Quitman.
Deputies conducted a traffic stop at 8:20 p.m. on Highway 11/4430. Upon inspection of the driver’s license that was presented, the deputies determined that the driver of the vehicle was not the person shown on the license. After investigating, the deputies arrested the driver, Crystal Sims, 35, of Leesburg for Failure to Identify Fugitive Intentionally giving False Information and a Franklin County warrant.
March 19th
At 2:24 a.m., deputies conducted a traffic stop on FM 115 and State Highway 11. Upon contact with the driver, the deputy immediately smelled the odor of alcohol and observed a clear plastic bag with what appeared to be a prescription medication on the center console. The deputy conducted a Standardized Field Sobriety Test on the driver and determined him to be intoxicated. The driver, Jonathan Kyle Duff, 29, of Pittsburg was arrested for Driving While Intoxicated and Possession of Controlled Substance.
Deputies were dispatched to CR 2351 in Mineola at 12:15 p.m. in reference to a burglary. The reporting party stated that he observed 3 individuals enter a neighbor’s home and remove property. The homeowners confirmed that they were missing some property from the house. The investigation is ongoing.
At 7:40 p.m., cows were reported out on CR 3230 in Quitman.
While on routine patrol, a deputy conducted a traffic stop on FM 17 in Alba at 10:40 p.m. The driver was not able to produce a valid driver’s license and the registration on the vehicle was expired so the driver was issued citations. The deputy was aware that one of the passengers had an active warrant out of Wood County. She was also found to be in possession of marijuana. Nancy Betty Lou Busbee, 58, of Alba was arrested for Possession of Marijuana and for an active capias warrant.
At 11:50 p.m., while on routine patrol, deputies attempted a traffic stop on FM 852, but the driver of the vehicle refused to stop. After finally pulling the vehicle over, one of the deputies located a box with a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia on the side of the road approximately 150 yards behind the vehicle. In-car video showed the box being tossed from the passenger side window prior to the vehicle pulling over. Both of the occupants were arrested. Ryan Emmitt Bonner, 23, of Winnsboro was arrested for Possession of a Controlled Substance; Tamper/Fabricate Physical Evidence; and Evading Arrest/Detention with Vehicle. Melissa Kay Tucker, 26, of Mineola was arrested for Possession of a Controlled Substance and Tamper/Fabricate Physical Evidence.
March 20th
Deputies were dispatched to North Highway 37 in Winnsboro at 8:09 a.m. on a theft call. The complainant reported that someone had taken his 18 foot trailer from his property. The trailer was valued at $3500. The investigation is continuing.
At 8:48 a.m., deputies were dispatched to Holiday Villages on a burglary of a building call. The reporting person stated that an unknown person had broken into his shed and taken several items. Investigators will follow-up.
Wood County Sheriff’s Office received a call at 9:40 a.m. regarding fraud. The victim reported that an unknown person had used her social security number to open a utility account without her knowledge. She was advised by the collections agency to file a police report.
At 9:51 a.m., cows were reported out on FM 3056 in Hawkins.
At 7:59 p.m., cows were reported out on CR 1570/CR 1575.
March 21st
Deputies met with a complainant at the Sheriff’s Office at 10:01 a.m. regarding the unauthorized use of a motor vehicle. The complainant advised that a person known to him had taken his vehicle off of his property and refused to return it. The investigators will follow-up on this case.
At 12:00 p.m., cows were reported out on FM 3056 in Hawkins.
At 12:12 p.m., cows were reported out on Highway 154E, east of FM 312.
At 1:23 p.m., cows were reported out on Highway 154W near Atlas Energy.
Deputies received a call at 1:25 p.m. from an individual reporting a theft. The complainant stated that an unknown person had stolen a game camera off of his property located on FM 2659. The investigation is continuing.
At 5:23 p.m., horses were reported out on N. Highway 37 in Quitman.

Soccer Bi-District Double Header in Princeton Friday; Games Will be Heard on KSST
There will be a Lady Cats and Wildcats’ soccer bi-district doubleheader on this Friday game day. The Lady Cats play Royse City at 6 p.m. and then the Wildcats face Lovejoy at 8 p.m. Both games are at Princeton. The Lady Cats and Wildcats are both home teams.
The Lady Cats are hoping for a good run in the playoffs like they had last year. Royse City was a third place finisher in their district while the Lady Cats finished second in their district. Royse City is expected to give the Lady Cats a good competitive game. Lady Cats Soccer Coach Jesus DeLeon said the Lady Bulldogs remind him of the Lady Cats bi-district opponent last year, Whitehouse and also of Hallsville, the number one team in the Lady Cats’ district.
The Wildcats are expected to have their hands full with Lovejoy, champions of their district. The Wildcats have had spurts of good solid play, then a swoon, but now good solid play again. The Wildcats went 7-1-1 before district play. They swooned during the first have of district play getting only one win. The Wildcats turned things around in the second half picking up four wins against only 2 losses. A win at Hallsville secured a playoff spot.

Two Dead, 18 Injured in Semi/Bus Accident Near Talco; Four Transported to CHRISTUS Sulphur Springs
Four Mt Pleasant athletes were transported to CHRISTUS Mother Frances Hospital Thursday night around 10:45 p.m. following a semi-truck/Mt Pleasant school bus accident on State Highway 271 near Talco. One coach and the driver of the semi-truck died and another is in critical condition. Eighteen student athletes riding on the bus were injured. Four were air lifted to area hospitals.
The semi-truck crossed over the median, side-swiped the school bus, and struck an auto driven by Assistant Coach Angelica Beard, 30, who was killed in the accident. There were no students in the auto.
Sulphur Springs resident and a former Lady Cat Basketball Coach, now Lady Tiger Basketball coach and girls’ Athletic Director at Mt Pleasant High School Tina Carrillo was on a second school bus that was not involved in the accident.
Wrong Direction on One Way Cumby Street Results in DFZ Arrest
Raymond Edward Dafft, 51, of Commerce was driving his Toyota in the wrong direction on a one way street in Cumby when a Cumby law enforcement officer saw him.
Dafft presented the officer with an expired driver’s license and a records check showed the license suspended. Dafft gave consent to search the vehicle and the officer found a small white plastic container on the passenger’s side with two different types of pills. Both are listed as a controlled substance. Dafft was driving the wrong way in the 100 block of Donelton Street near Cumby schools, a drug free zone.
He is in Hopkins County jail charged with two counts of Possession of a Controlled Substance Penalty Group 3 under 28-grams in a Drug Free Zone. He is held on a total of $10,000 in bonds.
Warrant Served for Animal Cruelty; Large Amount of Meth Found
When the Special Crimes Unit served two warrants on Juan Manuel Rodriguez-Aguilera, 48, of Sulphur Springs, marijuana and methamphetamine were in plain sight. A search of the room found an even larger amount of methamphetamine and two sets of digital scales.
Rodriguez-Aguilera is in Hopkins County Jail charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance Penalty Group 1 more than 4-gram but less than 200-grams ($30,000 bond), Possession of Marijuana more than 2 oz. but less than 4 oz. ($2,000 bond), and a warrant for Cruelty to Livestock Animal Neglect ($10,000 bond) and a warrant for Cruelty to non-livestock animals ($10,000 bond).
Theft at Dollar General; Man Flees Police a Second Time
Sulphur Springs Police responded to a call in reference to a theft at the Dollar General store on South Broadway Thursday. There they found Christopher Leon Huddleston, 38 of Sulphur Springs in possession of the stolen property. As officers sought to make the arrest, he ran from officers. They quickly caught him.

Huddleston is in Hopkins County Jail charged with Evading Arrest Detention with Previous Conviction and his being held for Violation of Parole. He is held on a $10,000 fine for evading arrest and without bail on the state parole violation.
Almost a month to the day, Huddleston had attempted to evade arrest. While on patrol, a Sulphur Springs Police officer noted a man running across the street. He was running from the manager of a convenience store located on League Street. The store manager was stating he had just been robbed.
The officer exited his vehicle and gave chase. The man evaded officers called to the scene but was soon found sitting near the railroad track drinking a Coors Beer that he had taken from the store. What was at first described to officers as an armed robbery turned out to be shoplifting. However, a records check on the man showed a prior conviction for evading arrest. That bumped everything up to a State Jail Felony.
Woman Stabs Boyfriend in Chest
Sulphur Springs Police Officers were called to the 100 block of Van Sickle Street in reference to disturbance. There they found the boyfriend of Christina Anne Serafino, 25, had a stab wound in chest area. Serafino admitted stabbing him.
Serafino is in Hopkins County Jail charged with Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon/Family Violence. It was also found that she had two misdemeanor warrants as well. One for Possession of Drug Paraphernalia and the other Violate Promise to Appear in Justice of the Peace Court.
