Second Arrest in Three Days; This Time in DFZ
Skye Lynn Hargett, 26, returned to Hopkins County Jail early Thursday morning after one day away. Hargett had been arrested Tuesday, May 30th, along with another woman for possession of methamphetamine less than one gram. Her Thursday, June 1, 2017, arrest was for the same amount of meth but this time in a drug free zone and this time, she was with Michael Wade Mauldin, 39.
Thursday morning between 12 a.m. and 1 a.m. a Hopkins County Deputy noted a 1995 Ford F-150 parked at the Pickton Post Office. The deputy recognized the driver, Mauldin, as one who had a record for narcotics use. The deputy asked consent to search but was denied consent. He then called for a K-9 and the K-9 made a positive alert on the vehicle. Inside the vehicle was a plastic bag containing suspected methamphetamine. Mauldin denied ownership as did Hargett.
Both Hargett and Mauldin were arrested. Mauldin is charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance Penalty Group 1 less than 1-gram in a Drug Free Zone and is being held on a $10,000 bond. Hargett was charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance Penalty Group 1 less than 1-gram in a Drug Free Zone and with the previous charge for which she had been bonded out of jail, she how is being held on a $30,000 bond.
A Chat with 2017 Dairy Festival Board President
For the 2017 Dairy Festival, Carolyn McKinney is wearing two hats…at least! She is the President of the Dairy Festival Board of Directors and she is the Director of Administration of the Southwest Dairy Museum, which is a top sponsor of the Dairy Festival. In fact, she invites you to the Southwest Dairy Museum during the week of June 12-17 for a free junior size ice cream cone, served from 11am-4pm to museum visitors.
In her KSST Morning Show interview with Enola Gay on June 1, Carolyn expressed her appreciation to the other board members for their dedication and hard work year after year and festival after festival. This being the 58th annual Dairy Festival, Carolyn gave a grateful nod to board member Lynda Hager who has served in almost every capacity for over 50 years! All the committee members are ready for a great 2017 Festival, and they invite you to “Opening Ceremonies” on Celebration Plaza at 12 noon Friday June 9.
Dairy Festival is a celebration of the dairy industry and the bounty it has brought to Hopkins County. This year’s Grand Marshals will be Joe Don Pogue and David Fowler. Parade Marshals will be the Bobby McDonald family. In fact, the annual Milking Contest has been renamed the Bobby McDonald Milking Contest in honor of his years of assistance. Early on, Bobby supplied cows from his herd for the contestants to milk, and in later years continued to promote this unique element of the Festival. Be sure and attend the Milking Contest at 4pm on Saturday June 10 under the shade trees on the Civic Center grounds. Contestants will include Queen hopefuls and their parents as well as hot air balloon pilots and their families.
Hopkins County Chamber of Commerce CEO Lezley Brown took the theme “It’s Your Moo-ve” to heart and announced a move in time and location for the Texas State Championship Homemade Ice Cream Freeze-off. It will be held on the front lawn of Shannon Oaks Church starting at 5:30pm on Saturday June 10. All-you-can-eat homemade ice cream will be served until it’s all gone at a cost of $3 per person. If you think you’re a pretty good homemade ice cream “cook”, enter the contest and compete for prizes and title. It’s easy and it’s free! Just contact the Chamber at 903-885-1661 or visit at 300 Connally Street. Complete rules and categories are posted at hopkinschamber.org.

Brookshire’s Donation Supports the Northeast Texas Children’s Museum
As Brookshire’s Grocery carts travel at the Children’s Museum, the “Customer in Training” sign can be seen just above the heads of the young customers. Since 2009, the Brookshire’s Grocery area has been one of the most popular areas in the Children’s Museum. Their continuing support goes toward supporting this exhibit. “As the items are constantly purchased and then restocked, many of the empty containers need to be replaced with Brookshire’s Grocery items, “said Sharline Freeman, Executive Director of the Children’s Museum.
Brookshire’s Grocery has included signage to add to the authenticity of the area. Dennis Anderson of Kartridge Korner added a “beep” for scanning each item. Each new addition has resulted in the increased popularity of the area. Young shoppers sometimes clear the shelves in their enthusiasm to scan and purchase the items.
As the number of visitors has increased each year at the Children’s Museum, the Brookshire’s Grocery area has had additional “Customer in Training” young shoppers. “This has been a great partnership. Our annual Easter Egg Hunt is sponsored by Brookshire’s Grocery. We appreciate their continuing support.”, said Donna Tavener, President of the Board of Directors of the Northeast Texas Children’s Museum.

Broc Hohenberger, Manager of Commerce Brookshire’s, presents the Brookshire’s donation to Sharline Freeman, Executive Director of the Northeast Texas Children’s Museum. The donation of Brookshire’s supports the very popular Brookshire’s Grocery in the Northeast Texas Children’s Museum.

Warrants Served on Trahan
Hopkins County deputies were sent to the Ferrari Inn to serve an active Hopkins County warrant for the arrest of Ritchie Adam Trahan, 49. During the arrest procedure, deputies found two smoking pipes, one of which had residue of methamphetamine.
Trahan was wanted for Violation of Probation for Impersonate Public Servant and for Violation of Probation for Manufacture Delivery of a Controlled Substance Penalty Group 1 less than 1-gram in a drug free zone.
Last year, while living in Como, Trahan confessed to Sulphur Springs Police Detective Sergeant Lenwood “Bo” Fox that he had representing himself as Detective Fox to his niece via Facebook. Trahan impersonated Fox and used the detective’s authority as an officer to induce his niece to not make accusations against him.
Trahan is now in Hopkins County jail being held without bond for the two probation violations and for possession of drug paraphernalia.

Wildcats Football 7-on-7 Season in Full Swing
The Wildcats’ varsity 7 on 7 football team won both games they played against Paris Tuesday at Paris. The Wildcats’ JV split a pair of games.
Wildcats Football Offensive Coordinator Matt Young said some 30 to 35 players participated. He said it was a great night although he mentioned he could see a little bit of rust since the 7 on 7 teams haven’t played anyone in a while. Still Coach Young said it was a good night for catching and throwing. He said he saw very few dropped passes.
Coach Young said Simeon Taylor caught some deep passes, Landry Tyson was able to get behind the Paris defense, Jase Thompson and Bryce McQueen worked the middle of the field, Austin Dodd worked across the field and Cason Goodson helped coming out of the backfield. Coach Young said both quarterbacks, Ryan Humphries and D’Corian Young, played really well. He said they showed accuracy and a great command of the offense. Coach Young said he enjoyed watching them work together.
He said 7 on 7 team members have been practicing in the Multipurpose Building about twice a week since school’s been out. They are preparing for two state qualifier tournaments coming up in June. One, involvng all East Texas teams, is in Tyler on Saturday, June 17 and the other, featuring lots of Metroplex teams, is in Rowlett on Friday, June 23.
Bookworm Box Renovation
The Bookworm Box is undergoing renovation! “We had these really big black bookshelves that were 18 inches deep and would cast shadows on the books. Yesterday we got new
shelves and we’re setting up to have a retail space!” Lin Reynolds, Colleen Hoover’s sister and public relations manager for the company, explained what customers could expect from the changes. “It’s made a lot more room, and we will be able to label our shelves. [The retail space will] have woodworking, key chains, and jewelry. We just got this cool post office sorter that we’ll use to display the wood designs.”
They also have more hutches, a new desk, and a display case on their way. One hutch will be designated for coffee mugs, journals, book sleeves, and metal jewelry. The display case will house awards given to the Bookworm Box as well as Rare Books.
The partners with the Bookworm Box are mostly cohorts, and people from the fan pages, whom the Bookworm Box Executives want to help with their own businesses due to all their support. One of the more well-known partners is the Tyler Candle Company, who is also a partner with Danna’s and The Florist.
Local artist, Brandon Adams, from Greenville has done most of the artwork seen at the store. Be sure to stop by the store and check out the new renovations. The store is still going to be open regular hours this week, so “feel free to come in and shop!” Lin Reynolds invited.
For more information about the Bookworm Box visit them on their website, or find them on facebook.
Colleen Hoover is currently in New York for BookCon, a fan convention that combines pop culture with literature, but she wanted to allow authors to have a space for signings. The renovation is expected to be completed by the end of the week, just in time for the book signing on Saturday June 2nd. The book signing is scheduled to be from 1:00 to 4:00 pm, and will have authors K.D. Wood, Kira Decker, Melinda Harris, and Carrie Thomas there to meet their fans and sign copies of their books! You don’t want to miss it!
