Saranzinski’s Travel Plans Cut Short; Back in Jail

Summer travel plans may not work out as expected. Todd Joseph Saranzinski, 55, is in Hopkins County Jail Wednesday charged with Hinder Apprehension or Prosecution Known Felon and with Permit Facilitate Escape Correction Facility after his near round trip Tuesday drive from the Hopkins County Civic Center to near Athens and back to Hopkins County. He didn’t make it to the Civic Center but was stopped on the southern edge of the county and transported to the jail.

Saranzinski gave a ride to Barney Dwayne Ebey, 53, who walked away from a work group at the local civic center. According to Sheriff Lewis Tatum, Ebey had made reservations earlier with Saranzinski and another individual expected to be arrested Wednesday. The two had become acquainted in the jail prior to Tuesday’s flight. Saranzinski was in jail until Monday for a 75-day commitment for Violation of Probation for Driving While Intoxicated 2nd. He had been released after serving his time.

Saranzinski is now residing in the local jail being held on a total of $100,000 in bonds.

Escapee Ebey and His Accomplice in Jail After a Tuesday Search

It took the day and assistance from Texas Department of Criminal Justice tracking dogs from Palestine and the Henderson County Sheriff and his deputies but Barney Dwayne Ebey, 53, and his accomplice Todd Joseph Saranzinski, 55, are in Hopkins County jail once again. Ebey fled a workgroup at the Hopkins County Civic Center Tuesday morning around 8 a.m. He was found west of Athens late Tuesday afternoon.

Now, Sheriff Lewis Tatum knows that Ebey was assisted in his escape by Saranzinski, who was released from the local jail Monday and who drove Ebey to the area where he was found west of Athens. Tatum told KSST News in a phone conversation shortly after the capture of Ebey that both men are in custody. Tatum said there may be one other individual involved but that arrest will probably be made Wednesday.

Saranzinski and Ebey were both in Hopkins County jail in the past week and Tatum believes that the escape was planned at that time. Ebey is charged with Engaging in Organized Crime and with two counts of Theft of Property more than $2500 but less than $30,000. Saranzinski was in the local jail for Violation of Probation for DWI.

Humane Society of the United States Releases Undercover Investigation of Pilgrim’s Pride

Humane Society of the United States Releases Undercover Investigation of Pilgrim’s Pride

In a news release issued Tuesday morning, June 27, 2017, the Humane Society of the United States has released the details of a multi-state undercover investigation into Pilgrim’s Pride—the nation’s second largest chicken producer—which documented inhumane practices and animal abuse.

At a Pilgrim’s Pride contract farm in Hull, Georgia, the farm owner himself repeatedly beat animals with a metal rod. Sick and injured chickens had their necks twisted in crude attempts to kill them. The HSUS investigator employed at both locations observed other birds being grabbed by their throats and viciously thrown in the air.

At a Pilgrim’s Pride slaughterhouse in Mt. Pleasant, Texas, chickens were punched and violently shackled by their legs. On video, a worker is shown repeatedly slamming the same chicken into shackles — for no apparent reason other than to inflict pain onto the animal.

Despite claims made by Pilgrim’s Pride that its employees handling live chickens receive animal welfare training, the HSUS undercover investigator at this Texas facility received no such training whatsoever, even during a full week of orientation. Animal welfare was never mentioned.

The HSUS has filed cruelty-to-animals complaints with the Madison County Sheriff’s Department in Danielsville, Georgia, and the Titus County Sheriff’s Office in Mt. Pleasant, Texas.

“The treatment of animals by Pilgrim’s Pride is shameful,” said Matt Prescott, senior director for corporate policy for The Humane Society of the United States. “From beating animals to inhumanely slaughtering them in their final moments, there’s simply no excuse for the abuse we documented in this multi-state investigation.”
