Ohio Pair Arrested for Drugs, Money Laundering

When the driver of a 2009 Dodge Journey, with an obscured license plate, ignored an official traffic control device on I-30 Westbound at the 131 mile-marker, a Hopkins County Deputy made a traffic stop and in plain view on the passenger floorboard was a syringe containing a brown liquid suspected to be Heroin. The male passenger, Elias Moreno (picture not available), informed the officer that there was cocaine, heroin, and Fentayl in the vehicle.

A probable cause search of the vehicle revealed multiple plastic bags of the three controlled substances. Also located in the vehicle was a green duffle bag concealed in the spare tire compartment. In the duffle bag were four large bundles wrapped in silver foil tape and vacuum sealed The four bundles contained cash totaling approximately $180,247.

K-9 O’Malley, along with Hopkins County Deputy handler performed a free air sniff on the currency. The K-9 provided a positive alert for illegal narcotics present on the currency.

Arrested were the driver, Jerrica Danielle Papenfuse, 29, of Toledo, Ohio, and Moreno.

Moreno, 45, of Toledo, Ohio, was charged with Money Laundering more than $150,000 but less than $300,000, Possession of a Controlled Substance Penalty Group 1 more than 4-grams but less than 200-grams, and Possession of a Controlled Substance more than 1-gram but less than 4-grams.

Papenfuse is charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance Penalty Group 1 more than 4-grams but less than 200-grams, and Possession of a Controlled Substance more than 1-gram but less than 4-grams.

Local Man Arrested for Illegal Sale of Cocaine

Following a Special Crimes Unit investigation into the illegal sales of cocaine over 4-grams but less than 200-grams, a felony warrant was issued and served on Andrew Imanuel Wooten, 26, of Sulphur Springs.

Wooten is in Hopkins County Jail charged with Manufacture Delivery of a Controlled Substance Penalty Group 1, more than 4-grams but less than 200-grams a Felony 1.

Lamar County Resident Seeks Area Assistance in Finding Stolen items

On or about December 24 or 25th, a Yamaha 660 Grizzly four-wheeler and a Lincoln SA 200 welder on a trailer were stolen from a farm in Lamar County, 3 miles outside Paris, according to the owner of the welder.

The owners of the properties are offering a $1000 reward leading to recovery and conviction of the individual or individuals who stole the items. If you have information regarding these items or the individual or individuals who took the items, contact your local law enforcement.

Larry Buster Memorial Kids’ Trout Fishing Day at Peavine Pinion Pool Set for February 3rd

On Saturday February 3rd, 2018, at Sulphur Springs City Park Pond (Peavine Pinion Pool located behind the Civic Center) will be the site of the Larry Buster Memorial Sulphur Springs Kids’ Trout Fishing Day. The event, which is sponsored by the National Wild Turkey Federation, Texas Parks and Wildlife Inland Fisheries Division, the City of Sulphur Springs, local merchants, civic organizations and many individual contributors, will run from 10:00 am until 2:00 pm.

Soft drinks and hot dogs will be provided by the Kiwanis Club of Sulphur Springs, and there will be drawings for door prizes for participating kids. Kids of all ages are encouraged to bring their rods, reels and bait, to take a chance at catching some of the 1,500 rainbow trout that will be stocked by Texas Parks and Wildlife Department personnel. Whole kernel corn, Berkley power eggs and trout bait, and small spinners are generally the favorite baits for trout.

Because this event is sponsored in part by Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, there is a special exemption in effect during the event. Adults who are actively helping kids fish for trout are exempt from the normal license requirements during the event only (10:00 am – 2:00 pm), Saturday February 3rd, 2018). All other anglers are required to have a freshwater fishing license. There is no minimum size limit on rainbow trout, but there is a daily bag limit of 5 fish per person.

Lady Cats Coach Chapman Keeps Team Focused

Lady Cats Basketball Coach Jeff Chapman said the best teams he has coached have always gotten better at the end of the season. He said that is also his goal for this year’s Lady Cats’ basketball team.

Tuesday night (January 23) the Lady Cats defeated Pine Tree 59-26 at home. Coach Chapman said the Lady Cats stayed about the same. He said the two best Pine Tree players played better Tuesday night than they did in Pine Tree earlier this season. Coach Chapman said he is working on motivating his team, especially as they play teams they have already defeated handily in district play. He said his goal is to have his team play consistently every night and be ready to play every night.

Coach Chapman was not happy that his team scored only 4 points in the second quarter but he added during the other three quarters the Lady Cats did what they should do.

A second game with Marshall is coming up Friday at Marshall. The Lady Cats won the first time around at home, 71-27.

Wildcats Basketball Hosts Marshall Friday; Cipoletta Calls Pine Tree Game Good Defensive Game for Team

Wildcats Basketball Coach Clark Cipoletta said he was proud of his guys for the way they played in a 62-41 win at Pine Tree Tuesday night (January 23).

Coach Cipoletta said the Wildcats played really well in the first quarter despite having only a 9-8 lead after one quarter. He said the Wildcats missed some easy opportunities to score points. Coach Cipoletta said the Wildcats really opened the game up in the second and third quarters outscoring the Pirates, 35-12 to take a 44-20 lead after three quarters.

He said the Pine Tree game was one of the Wildcats best ones defensively and he added there were also stretches of the game where the Wildcats played really well on offense. Coach Cipoletta emptied his bench in the fourth quarter assuring that lots of guys got to play some minutes.

Victor Iwuakor scored 15 points to lead the Wildcats and Coach Cipoletta said the Wildcats perhaps did their best job all year of getting Victor deep touches. Coach Cipoletta said Iwuakor did a good job on turning and scoring after getting those touches.

The Wildcats, ranked #7 in the state, are now 7-0 in district play and 24-3 for the season. They will play Marshall Friday night in Wildcats Gym. The first time the two teams played, the Wildcats won 50-28 in Marshall.

Wildcats Soccer Coach Nicky Wiggins enjoyed his team’s win over Pittsburg Tuesday night (January 23) in the Wildcats first regular season game in the new Prim Stadium. The Wildcats won, 2-0.

Coach Wiggins said the first goal came on a successful penalty kick by Angel Tavera in the first half. The kick occurred because of an attempted sliding tackle by a Pittsburg player on Wildcat Omar Hernandez. In the second half, Julio Robles added a second Wildcat goal. Coach Wiggins said the Wildcats’ defense was very good. He also said the Wildcats missed a lot of opportunities to score more goals.

The Wildcats play next in their district opener against Pine Tree at The Prim on February 2. Coach Wiggins said his team would be working a lot on scoring when opportunities arise.

Lady Cats did not play Tuesday night (January 23) due to the flu affecting a number of players and Lady Cat Coach Eric Bailey.

Miller Grove Rebounds for Win; Face Roxton in Homecoming Game Next Tuesday

The Miller Grove Hornets’ basketball team remained unbeaten in district play with a come from behind win against Fannindel, 68-62 Tuesday night (January 23).

Fannindel had a big 21-9 lead after one quarter and led 32-29 at halftime. The Hornets outscored Fannindel 39-30 in the second half to get the win.

The Hornets were led by Treyton Andree who had 28 points. Luke Brignon had 17. Kobe Robertson had 10 points. Andjelo Alcox scored 9. Grant Sharp and Grant Earp both scored 2 points.

Hornets Coach Gary Billingsley said the Hornets were very sluggish on the offensive end and that resulted in some easy baskets for Fannindel. Coach Billingsley gave Fannindel credit for playing with a lot of intensity. He said he was also proud of his team for battling and getting another road win.

The Hornets are 4-0 in district play and are 18-13 for the season. The Hornets also won on the road Friday at Sulphur Bluff, 54-38. Luke Brignon had 17 points. Albert Serrano had 14, Treyton Andree 11, Andjelo Alcox 9 and Jack McCoy 3.

The Hornets will host Roxton for a homecoming game next Tuesday.
