Coach Talk: Hammack on Wildcat Wins; Corrillo Says Lady Cats Continued to Hit the Ball

Hammack on Wildcats Sat. Wins Over Wylie East

Wildcats Baseball Coach Jerrod Hammack said ace pitcher Ryan Humphries set the tone Saturday (May 5) for what turned into two wins at McKinney Boyd as the Wildcats got by Wylie East, 2 games to 1 in a bi-district series. Humphries threw a 5-hitter and gave up only an unearned run. Pacen Edwards and Jaxon Chaney kept it going on the mound in the last game as they combined for a no-hitter and also yielded just one unearned run. Coach Hammack said getting a victory over a two seed in Wylie East’s district is really doing something. He said he has a lot of respect for Wylie East Coach Heath Andrews. As the coaches met after the game, Coach Andrews said he hated to play the Wildcats. The Wildcats have won twice over the Raiders in bi-district series. Prosper is next for the Wildcats in an Area series. All games are at Rockwall High. Game one at Friday at 7:30 p.m. Game two is Saturday at 1 p.m. with a third game, if necessary, taking place 30 minutes after the conclusion of game two.

Carrillo on Area Win over Little Elm

After having to come from behind in game one against Little Elm, the Lady Cats’ softball team overwhelmed the Lady Lobos, 13-0 Friday night (May 4) to take the Area series, 2 games to zero. On KSST Radio and Cable Channel 18’s Saturday Morning Coaches Show, Lady Cats Softball Coach David Carrillo said the Lady Cats just continued to hit the ball. He said they hit the ball well the entire series. Coach Carrillo said the Lady Cats just seemed to steal the will of the Lady Lobos in the last game. He said the quality pitcher from Little Elm has not been hit like that before. The Lady Cats had twelve hits Friday night. Alyssa Abron had four hits. Everyone who saw it wanted to talk about Brinklee Driver’s monster three-run home run. Coach Carrillo said he knew the ball was gone from the time it was hit He said it was the hardest and farthest he has ever seen a ball hit in his career. Coach Carrillo said he was beginning to think no one could hit the ball over the wall at McKinney North. Kate Womack, Sadie Stroud and Sierra Smith all had near misses. Coach Carrillo again said the good pitching the Lady Cats faced in district play has helped them be ready for playoff pitching. He also had positive things to say about Lady Cats pitcher Bailey Haggerty who Coach Carrillo thinks might be the winningest Lady Cats pitcher ever. He said she has a bulldog mentality in the circle. Coach Carrillo said she is a thinker who makes adjustments when she has to. He said she does not panic. He said she was not only a great pitcher but also a super kid. Coach Carrillo said he feels like he is coaching a special team. He said even with a bigger roster this year, the team has bought into his We versus Me approach. The Lady Cats play Forney in a Regional Quarterfinal series Friday and Saturday. Game one is Friday at 7 p.m. in Forney. Game two is Saturday at 11 a.m. at Lady Cat Park. Game three, if needed, will be played after game two.

Meal A Day: Going Above and Beyond for this Community
Meal a Day workers have been reportedly helping out meal recipients and community members in need. One lady said the workers fixed her flowerbed on a rainy day.
KSST sat down with Karon Weatherman to find out more about these community helpers.
Weatherman explained that as the drivers go out on their daily routes they see the needs for the community members. “They wanted to help [this lady] because they love her.” Karen elaborated by saying “Meal a Day workers often help out” when they’re visiting the residents. “They take the trash out, or go grocery shopping for them.” These workers go above and beyond for their route members. “You sure get attached to them. When you’re driving and delivering [the food] you’d think you’re blessing [the meal a day recipients], but really the people are blessing you.” Many of the drivers think of their routes as time to visit their friends.
Meal a Day has about 80 volunteers who prepare and deliver food for 150-60 people Monday through Friday. The volunteers range from drivers and cooks.  There are six routes with one to two drivers on each route every day, and five cooks who make the food each day. It is an organization that is full of love and people that are exceptionally wonderful. If you would like more information on Meal A Day contact Karon Weatherman at (903)-885-1661.
