Mesquite Man With 10.7 Pounds of Meth Arrested by Local DPS; Wanted by U S Marshalls
Daniel Lopez, 38, of Mesquite is in Hopkins County Jail held without bond on a warrant out of the U S Marshalls Service and for Manufacture Deliver 10.7 pounds of methamphetamine ice.
Lopez was stopped for a traffic violation by DPS Trooper Aaron Hanna at the 129 mile marker on I-30 Monday evening, July 23, 2018, around 9:30 p.m. Showing signs of nervousness and criminal activity, Lopez gave consent to search the vehicle he was driving. In an aftermarket compartment, the trooper found the 10.7 pounds of meth. It was also found that he was wanted on the U S Marshalls’ Service warrant.
PJC Health Department Gets New Equipment

Paris Junior College students in the Emergency Medical Services Program recently worked in the new ambulance simulator, which will be on display Thursday at the Health Occupations Open House from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Paris Junior College will be showcasing new health occupation program equipment and upgrades to the public on Thursday, July 26, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., in the Bobby R. Walters Workforce Training Center.
Through generous community grants, Radiology Technology has received new equipment, the Nursing Department has received medium and high-fidelity simulation equipment, Emergency Medical Services has an ambulance simulator, and Surgical Technology has received new lights and a new setting.
Students are excited to have already begun using the new equipment. Faculty will be on hand to answer questions and the new equipment will be operating during the tour.

Cumby Officer’s Memory and Service Honored by Congressman Ratcliffe

Congressman John Ratcliffe honored the service and memory of Cumby Police Officer Jarrod Friddle Monday morning when Robin Bass, Deputy District Director for the congressman (front, right) presented a flag and certificate to Jarrod’s wife, Carrie Friddle . Officer Friddle died due to a sudden medical event following a work shift earlier this month. The presentation was made during the regular session of Commissioners Court , July 23, 2018.
SSHS Band Color Guard Begins Practice for 2018-2019 Season
The Color Guard for the Wildcats Marching Band is involved in a camp this week (July 23-27). They started Monday morning. Their instructor this year is Alma Ramirez. She is being helped at camp by 2018 SSHS senior and color guard veteran Celeste Leeds Laliberte. Ms. Ramirez, a Bowie Library Aide and former SSISD ESL Aide and substitute teacher, said she learned about the need for a color guard instructor from Bowie Music Teacher Christi Emmert, wife of new Band Director Spencer Emmert. Ms. Ramirez was in color guard at Tyler Junior College and in high school at Alba-Golden. She said there are 18 members in the color guard this school year. Sixteen were at camp Monday morning. Ms. Ramirez said she has met with Director Emmert who explained what he was looking for and what he expected from the color guard. Ms. Ramirez said she is excited about the music in this fall’s band show called The Grid. Monday morning color guard members went through drills designed to perfect technique. Ms. Ramirez said by the end of the week she hopes the color guard will be very nearly clean on fundamentals while being close to having down the first and second guard routines in the show. The entire band will gather Monday for an attendance required orientation session from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m.

Local Employers Sought to Present Career Paths at LEAP Youth Career Expo for 8th Grade Students
The annual LEAP Youth Career Expo at Hopkins County Civic Center is September 21, 2018. The expo assists 8th grade students in Hopkins County to make a connection between careers and the endorsement decision they make prior to entering high school.
Local employers are encouraged to register to assist in the event. Local employers present job requirements in educational and background needs for those who apply for career paths in their related fields.

Two Sulphur Springs Men Arrest for Cocaine Possession by Cumby Police
During a traffic stop at the 113 eastbound mile marker on I-30, Cumby Police located a small amount of suspected cocaine in the center cup holder of a 2009 Dodge Charger. The vehicle was stopped due to a light out over a temporary tag for a license plate.

Jose Angel Valdez, 22, of Sulphur Springs was arrested for Possession of a Controlled Substance Penalty Group 1, less than 1-gram.
Jorge Heriberto Perez Gomez, 24, of Sulphur Springs (picture not available) was arrested for Possession of a Controlled Substance Penalty Group 1, less than 1-gram.
Two Local Women Arrested for Meth Possession
July 23, 2018 – When the driver of a vehicle stopped for a traffic violation at North Davis and Connally Streets refused consent to search, a K9 was called to the scene. Leah Nicole Walker, 35, of Sulphur Springs, the driver of the vehicle, was nervous during the stop and the officer asked for consent to search the vehicle. Tanya Marie Gilbert, 32, of Saltillo, was a passenger in the vehicle.
The K9 alerted on the vehicle and the officer conducted a search that located a crystal like substance believed to be Methamphetamine in the vehicle. On the passenger’s person, the officer found methamphetamine.

Gilbert is being held in Hopkins County Jail on a total of $45,000 in bonds.

Winnsboro Police Department arrested five, investigated two accidents, responded to 137 calls for service, issued 45 citations, and wrote 37 warnings during the report period July 16-22, 2018.
