Lady Cats Defeat Lindale 3-2

It took some time for the Lady Cats’ volleyball team to get the hang of playing five set district matches at home but they seem to have figured it out. The Lady Cats last four district home matches required a fifth set.

The Lady Cats lost the first two to Greenville and Texas High in the first half of district play. In a big week this week, the Lady Cats won a pair of five setters at home over Royse City Tuesday (October 9) and Lindale Friday (October 12). Against Lindale, the Lady Cats looked like they would take the match in straight sets winning set one, 25-20 and set two, 25-23. Then the Lady Eagles struck back to even the match by taking set three, 25-23 and set four, 25-17. The Lady Cats had the right stuff in set five to take the set, 15-12 and the match, 3-2.

After a 1-4 record in the first half of district play, the Lady Cats are now 2-0 in the second half. As a result, they are climbing up in the district standings. With Friday’s win, the Lady Cats improve to 3-4 in district play. They are now tied for third place in the district standings with Royse City and Greenville. Texas High is first at 7-0 and Lindale is second at 5-2. Mount Pleasant is at 0-7 in the cellar. The Lady Cats are now 27-11 for the season.

The Lady Cats hope to continue their good fortune in the second half of district play as they travel to Greenville for a key district match Tuesday (October 16) at 6:30 p.m.

Wildcats at Ennis Seeking 4th District Win

In Friday night (October 12) football, it’s the Wildcats and the Ennis Lions playing a district game at Lions’ Memorial Stadium in Ennis. Ennis is expected to be the toughest district foe the Wildcats have played so far this season. The Wildcats come in with a 3-0 mark in district play and in second place with wins over Terrell, Royse City and Forney. The Wildcats are 4-0 for the season.

Ennis lost their first two games of the season. The first was to Class 6A arch rival Waxahachie and the second was to district foe Kaufman. Wildcats Coach Greg Owens says there is no shame in losing to those two adding they will beat quite a few teams this season. Ennis comes into Friday night’s game with three straight district wins over North Forney, Terrell and Royse City. They are in third place.

In the all time series between the two schools, the Wildcats lead 4-3. The last time the two teams played was bi-district in 2014. Ennis got a 52-47 win on their way to a state championship.

Ennis is coached by Sam Harrell, in his second stay with the Lions. Harrell ‘s in his first year back after a 7 year hiatus as he battled multiple sclerosis. He coached at Ennis for 16 years before that taking medical retirement in 2010.

The Wildcats Head Football Coach is Greg Owens in his thirteenth season. Coach Owens says he likes the potential upside for his team this year.

We will bring you all of the excitement of Wildcats football at Ennis live on KSST Radio beginning at 7:30 p.m. Friday. We will also videotape the game for replay later on Channel 18 on Suddenlink Cable.

Aphids in trees By Mario Villarino

Aphids suck plant sap from leaves, stems or even roots of plants.  Most are very host-specific, meaning they feed on only one or a few related kinds of plants.  Therefore, there is usually little danger they will move to other, different kinds of plants.  If wilting is apparent, or the sticky honeydew (aphid droppings, may result in plant covered with black sooty mold) become a problem, control with insecticides labeled for aphid control.

Otherwise, leave them alone and watch nature take its course with predators and parasitoids coming in to feast on these pests.  Among the choices for control, insecticidal soaps and horticultural oils are good, low-impact options for these insects.  Be sure to spray leaf undersides and contact the aphids directly, for these sprays only kill on contact.  Bayer Advanced Tree & Shrub, or other product containing imidacloprid, can be an effective aphid control, but it may take a month for results to become apparent.

Dr. Carlos E. Bográn, previously an Associate Professor & Extension Specialist with the  Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, commented: “I also suggest trying high pressure water sprays to wash out the aphids and the heaviest wax accumulations to facilitate foraging by ladybeetles and other predators and clean up the plants.  Some time ago I helped with a research program trying to evaluate the effects of several factors on the growth of oaks. Young oak trees were field planted under different shade and rain exclusion conditions. We had high natural infestations of oak woolly aphids that year but the ones protected from rain had much more aphids, sooty mold and aesthetic damage than unprotected oaks.”
