Local Man Arrested for Assault Public Servant
A disturbance in the 1500 block of East Industrial drew the attention of Sulphur Springs Police. The son of Ronnie Anthony Jones, 55, told officers that Jones had verbally threatened to kill him. Jones was verbally argumentative with police as well. Jones attempted to release an aggressive dog on officers as they attempted to take him into custody.
Police deployed a Taser but did not deter Jones from his hostilities. As the officer took Jones to the ground, Jones struck the officer in the face with a closed fist causing pain to the officer. Officers finally were able to control Jones. An injury to Jones caused by the altercation was medically cleared before Jones was placed in Hopkins County Jail.
Jones is charged with a third degree felony of Assault Public Servant and with two misdemeanors—Assault by Threat Family Violence and Resisting Arrest.

Winnsboro Police Department October 29-November 4, 2018
Winnsboro Police arrested three, responded to two non-injury accidents, responded to 168 calls for service, issued 56 citations, and wrote 50 warnings during the report period, October 29-November 4, 2018.
Melinda Garrett, 50, of Leesburg, was arrested October 30th on a Winnsboro Municipal Warrant.
Jeremy Crouch, 36, of Winnsboro, was arrested November 4th on a Franklin County Warrant.
Brittney Wade, 27, of Gilmer was arrested November 4th on a Winnsboro Municipal Warrant.
A two vehicle accident October 29th at Cedar and Walnut Streets and a two vehicle November 2nd in the 200 block of East Coke Road. No injuries were reported in either accident.

TxDOT Urges Texas Drivers to End the Streak of Daily Death on Roadways
AUSTIN – Not all anniversaries are happy and Nov. 7 is one of the saddest of all. Since Nov. 7, 2000, at least one person has died on Texas roadways every single day. In an effort to end this deadly 18-year milestone, the Texas Department of Transportation, through its #EndTheStreakTX campaign, reminds drivers it’s a shared responsibility among roadway users and engineers to keep our roads safe.
“We all have the power to end the streak of daily deaths on Texas roadways,” said Texas Transportation Commissioner Laura Ryan. “Don’t drink and drive; put away the cell phone; buckle up; and obey traffic laws. Be the driver you would want next to you, in front of you or behind you. Together, we can end the streak.”
“It’s heartbreaking to know that every day for the past 18 years someone has lost a spouse, child, friend or neighbor on our state’s roadways,” said TxDOT Executive Director James Bass. “Ending this deadly daily streak is a shared responsibility. We will continue to engineer our roads to be more forgiving of drivers’ errors, but we all must work toward ending such preventable contributing factors as distracted driving, speeding and drunk driving. Let’s make it a priority to be safe, focused and responsible behind the wheel. Let’s end the streak.”
To help raise awareness of this tragic, daily statistic, TxDOT is asking people to share personal stories of loved ones lost in car crashes on their social media pages using photo and video testimonials with the hashtag, #EndTheStreakTX. The agency also will be posting startling statistics for the public to repost on social media outlets to help share this important message.
Since Nov. 7, 2000, fatalities resulting from vehicle crashes on Texas roadways have numbered more than 66,000. The leading causes of fatalities continue to be failure to stay in one lane, alcohol and speed. To decrease the chances of roadway crashes and fatalities, TxDOT reminds drivers to:
- Buckle seatbelts – all passengers need to be buckled
- Pay attention – put phone away and avoid distractions
- Never drink and drive – drunk driving kills; get a sober ride home
- Drive the speed limit – obey speed limits and drive slower when weather conditions warrant

Significant weather advisory for Hopkins, Rains and Van Zandt Counties. At 10:33 p.m. Doppler Radar was tracking a strong thunderstorm along a line extending from near Greenville to Kaufman to Hillsboro with movement east at 40 mph.
Wind gusts up to 50 mph will be possible with these storms. Lightning is also a hazard.
Cross Country: Miller Grove Hornets State Champs; Other County Schools Place
Miller Grove and Saltillo cross country runners continue to make their presence felt at the State Cross Country Meet.
The Miller Grove Hornets captured the state championship for Class 1A Boys and the Lady Hornets were second. For Miller Grove, freshman Isaiah Billingsley finished 9th. Kobe Robertson was right behind him in 10th place. Lance Verner Davis was 13th, Grant Earp was 17th, Matthew Brignon was 20th, Tanner Hensley was 37th and Lexton Sly was 84th. For the Lady Hornets, Jorja Bessonett was 7th, Cassidy Seaney was 9th, Jolee Fox was 13th, Lauren Bullard was 38th, Alexa Pelerose was 72nd, Lainy Burnett was 101st and Harli Watson was 125th.
The Saltillo Lions finished third in state and the Lady Lions were 13th. For the Lions, Garrett Tarver was 3rd, Jayden Holloway was 23rd, Dillon Beadle was 32nd, Matthew Gurley was 59th, Brancen Cupp was 88th, Edi Olayo was 91st and Ben Moore was 126th. For the Lady Lions, Sienna Collins was 14th, Raegan Speir was 59th, Kristina Wade was 86th, Ofelia Cabrera was 127th, Jocelyn Ochoa was 134th, Chandler Bain was 145th and Danielle Ross was 146th.
Other area school finishers in Class 1A were Brennon Newell of Sulphur Bluff in 73rd place, Maddie Hooker of Yantis in 5th place and Bailey Neal of Sulphur Bluff in 34th place.
In Class 2A Boys, Mario Perez of North Hopkins finished in 46th place.
Attention Turns to Tuesday Election Day Following Strong Turnout During Early Voting
With 714 in-person votes cast Friday, the last day for early voting, 6,690 votes have been cast in the November 6th Mid-term Election. This total does not include limited ballots or provisional ballots cast.
Election Day is Tuesday, November 6th. Hopkins County voters may cast ballots at any of the Vote Centers in the county.
Voters will need one of seven forms of ID: Texas Driver License, Texas Personal Identification Card, Texas Election Identification Certificate, Texas Handgun License, United States Military Identification Card, or United States Passport (book or card).
Vote Centers open November 6th include: In the city of Sulphur Springs: the Lutheran Church, 1000 Texas Street; Morning Chapel Missionary Baptist Church, 208 Fuller Street; County Courthouse, 118 Church St; Grace Family Church, 1901 Loop 301 East; Civic Center, 1200 Houston St; League Street Church of Christ, 1100 South League.
